A friend has just spotted a news item on a shopping mall TV advertising screen [bizarre I know] saying that 'two members of the Smiths are set to play together on stage for the first time in X years in a charity concert'. I can't find anything on the net. Can anyone substantiate this?

It's Marr and Rourke at Manchester v Cancer later in Jan. Nothing exciting.

Dr.C, Tuesday, 3 January 2006 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Oh, the threads that say "Smiths Reforming" are having a reunion.

Next tuesday.

We've done this before.

Sorry, Redd. I did do a quick search but there was nothing specific on it.

It's OK, kirin-san. I've run out of things to say so now I'm reduced to posting the "We've done this before" meme.

Peter West (Peter West), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Isn't that "William, It Was Really Nothing"?

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 18:14 (twenty years ago)

i don't care about anything except myself

marc h. (marc h.), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 18:19 (twenty years ago)

Cheers, got it. It was "William....." and the verse is
"How can you stay with a fat girl
Who says Would you like to marry me
and if you like you can buy the ring
She doesnt care about anything"

Peter West (Peter West), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 19:07 (twenty years ago)

While we're at it, you might as well know that that song, and that part of the song in particular, is based on the film (or is it the novel?) Billy Liar.

The Smiths actually secretly reformed around '97 to play annual Christmas gigs for the employees of Area 51 in Nevada.

ts: smiths reform vs. welfare reform

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 19:20 (twenty years ago)

if we don't privatize the smiths then when your children are old enough to receive them they won't be there

more people believe in aliens than believe the smiths will be around when they retire

marc h. (marc h.), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Today is the day the Smiths reunite threads reunite.

(Told yer)

two years pass...

from "Digital Spy":

"Report: The Smiths close to reunion

Friday, October 24 2008, 12:12 BST

By Alex Fletcher, Entertainment Reporter

Tabloid reports have claimed that The Smiths are considering reuniting for the Coachella music festival.

The 1980s indie band, which featured Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce, have been offered £2.8 million by organisers, according to The Sun.

Morrissey has repeatedly ruled out the idea of reforming the group during interviews, once claiming: "I'd rather eat my own testicles than reform The Smiths - and that's saying something coming from a vegetarian."

Rifts between the group developed further in 1996 when Joyce successfully sued Marr and Morrissey for unpaid royalties.

However, the singer's manager Irving Azoff is reportedly keen for the band members to resolve their differences.

"It has looked impossible in the past but suddenly it all looks like it could happen," said a source.

"The buzz around the people who used to work for the band is they could play Coachella for a ludicrous amount of money. It's closer than it ever has been. The split was a messy affair, but time's a healer."

The Smiths split in 1987 after releasing the seminal albums The Smiths, Meat Is Murder, The Queen Is Dead and Strangeways Here We Come."

Will it finally happen? Should it happen?

Sources close to both members of the band and Coachella have denied that there has been any new move to reunite the group for next year's festival.

A British newspaper had claimed The Smiths were considering burying the hatchet for next year's event.

Meanwhile, the group's guitarist Johnny Marr's manager dismissed the story, telling our sister title Uncut that the Smiths reunion rumours were \"rubbish\".

Morrissey has previously claimed he was offered a near £40 million for just him and Smiths guitarist Marr to reunite for the Californian event in 2006.

Thanks for the NME link Creeztophair. I feel equally distressed by the prospect of The Smiths reuniting and by the possibility that they'll never play together again. Go figure.

Yeah, I know. People and the press crying wolf practically since they disbanded etc. One of the readers' comments on the NME implies that it may have been a rumour to foster sales of yet another compilation to be released next month.

Vision, Saturday, 25 October 2008 05:32 (seventeen years ago)

"said a source" what a bunch of shite. This is rumours and nothing more.
