scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 02:47 (nineteen years ago)

what scott said.

"Evil Eye" from The Action is Go is a really rad song.

Overall,a mostly inessential band, but they have their moments.

Avoid the last 2 studio albums especially "California Crossing"

In Search Of... is great. Anything up to "King Of The Road" is pretty good.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 03:22 (nineteen years ago)

A few track suggestions:

Asphalt Risin'
Seahag
Module Overload

(I know my english is terrible, please, have mercy on me)

I can't choose any particular song because I think they're too similar. I believe in Fu Manchu as a conceptual act, they always do the same record with always the same songs (yeah, the guitar riffs are always different, maybe the song estructure can change too, but the essence it's just the same). They also try to reflect the effects of entropy so the albums are gettin' worse year by year...
I think "In search of..." is the best choose.

Asphalt Risin' is on a mixtape that I have around here somewhere and blends in well with Verbena and Kyuss.
That help?

Fu Manchu's two drawbacks as a hard rock act are pretty fundamental.
First, a really shitty singer whose limitations are used to dictate an artificial style. Second, a stiff, essentially rotten, rhythm section.

The titles of their songs and concepts are better than their execution. One wishes "Laser Blast" was actually as good as the good/bad/wretched sci-fi B-movie it's hung on. All told, you can probably make one decent CD from their catalog, but it's a job. Their studio cover of BOC's "Godzilla" eats it. The live version is better for some reason.

three years pass...

In celebration of its 20th anniversary, FU MANCHU has a number of very special events planned for 2010. The band will unveil a host of plans that include rolling out both one-of-a-kind live events and extra special vinyl releases. Additionally, the VIRULENCE (pre-FU MANCHU) recordings will be remastered and packaged with the band’s “1985-87 demos” and both live songs and video footage from 1987-89 under the title If This Isn`t A Dream…1985-1989. The package will be made available on both CD and LP and is slated for a winter 2009 release via Southern Lord Records.

KING OF THE ROAD SAYS YOU MOVE TOO SLOW

Midnight Maniac (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 17:10 (thirteen years ago)

King of the Road is their best, I don't care what anyone else says.

And I like California Crossing.

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 17:14 (thirteen years ago)

I agree with Adrien.

Midnight Maniac (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 17:53 (thirteen years ago)

Conan The Asshander (Doran), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 17:59 (thirteen years ago)

King of the Road is the one I like the best and has some of their most catchy songs. It jams front to back and is a great interstate record.

earlnash, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 22:29 (thirteen years ago)

I don't recall California Crossing as being significantly worse than most of their others that you'd make a big deal of it

I'm sort of intrigued abt that covers thing and I know they're all olde tyme HC dudes but I still can't figure out how them covering eg that Void song is gonna work

We All Had Guess Papers (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 22:43 (thirteen years ago)

ten years pass...

They've been quietly putting out a steady stream of archival things on their Bandcamp, including some older things with extra tracks they dug up:

https://fumanchuband.bandcamp.com/

None of the Mammoth era releases yet (though maybe they're elsewhere), but all sorts of good stuff, including the Man's Ruin tracks with some new goods:

https://fumanchuband.bandcamp.com/album/godzillas-eatin-dust-4

And an expanded Return to Earth:

https://fumanchuband.bandcamp.com/album/return-to-earth-1991-1993-deluxe-edition

Also Scott Hill will regularly email you a quick "thanks" note for everything you buy. Very polite of him!
