rabid love for Ne-Yo's "So Sick of Love Songs"

The first verse alone is classic:

Gotta change my answering machine
Now that I'm alone
Cuz right now it says that
we
Can't come to the phone
And I know it makes no sense
Cuz you walked out the door
But it's the only way I hear your voice anymore
[holy shit!]

Plus the beat's great, some real interesting polyrhythmic tam tam thing with a nice guitar ostinato, Ne-Yo's voice is very good and Michael Jacksonish, the melody's real pretty, and the whole thing is efficient: verse, verse, refrain, verse, refrain, refrain where he sings melodic variations and whatnot (I think), out. We need more efficient beautiful songs!

Anybody know anything else about Ne-Yo or heard the album? Allmusic just says 2006 Def Jam.

No, I've just heard it on the top 40 station a couple times. It'll be everywhere you go soon enough, I'm sure.

I like it. I still think Ne-Yo sounds a little too much like Ginuwine, though.

Heard this last night. Yup.

Yeah, this song is pretty much my favorite thing on the radio right now outside of a track I have yet to identify on the modern rock station that basically sounds like Bauhaus doing "Bela Lugosi's Dead 2005".

Dan (Why Can't I Turn Off The Radio?) Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 13 January 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

I like it a lot more than Stay.

He wrote Let Me Love You.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Friday, 13 January 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

No way!

I liked this a LOT when it came out, but it's starting to grate on me (thanx to constant rotation) - that beat sounds rinky-dink after the 50th time. Reminds me of "We Belong Together" (albeit w/out any shoutouts).

I like "Let Me Love You" a lot more.

I wasn't a fan of this song, or his other singles, but his newest tune "Sexy Love" is absolute genius. The synthline, that odd processsing on the beat, the melody. Brill! And He wrote that totally, outrageously brilliant Rihanna single "Unfaithful," didn't he (I don't wanna bee... a MURDERERRRRRRRRR)? Colour me impressed.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 30 July 2006 02:33 (nineteen years ago)

i like the beat on 'sexy love,' but 'so sick' kills it in all other respects.

Please tell us it wasn't a She Wants Revenge song, Dan.

"let go" off of this album has such a sublime chorus

dyao, Thursday, 20 May 2010 15:12 (fifteen years ago)

"so sick" is so good. the best thing about it is the faint sound of police sirens in the backing track that you can just barely hear; it makes me feel so lonely and :'(

"let me love you" is also brilliant.

teledyldonix, Friday, 21 May 2010 00:10 (fifteen years ago)

Prefer "Sexy Love" and "Let Me Love You," actually, but this is good.

ne-yo is the artist that kinda gradually coaxed me back into liking pop music in 2006, thx ne-yo

alfred do you mean "let me get this right"?

Face Book (dyao), Friday, 21 May 2010 01:09 (fifteen years ago)

well at that point Ne-Yo's only other song was "Stay With Me" -- i guess there's some bits in the verses that are a little Ginuwine-esque, but still funny to think I was apparently hung up on the comparison

some dude, Friday, 21 May 2010 01:17 (fifteen years ago)

No -- Mario's "Let Me Love You"

jonathan blapelbon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 May 2010 01:21 (fifteen years ago)

oh I didn't realize ne-yo wrote 'let me love you'. haha I guess I should read threads before I revive them. xp

Face Book (dyao), Friday, 21 May 2010 01:22 (fifteen years ago)

some dude, Friday, 21 May 2010 01:35 (fifteen years ago)

jonathan blapelbon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 May 2010 01:37 (fifteen years ago)

this is cool -- i wouldn't put it past him to work with dudes like ne-yo if he ever puts out a solo album

jonathan blapelbon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 May 2010 01:38 (fifteen years ago)

his solo album is supposed to be coming out sometime soon, pretty psyched

some dude, Friday, 21 May 2010 01:50 (fifteen years ago)

his band already worked with babyface, the old ne-yo

The Reverend, Friday, 21 May 2010 07:24 (fifteen years ago)

very true

jonathan blapelbon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 May 2010 08:00 (fifteen years ago)

if he ever puts out a solo album

Oh like this is even up for debate. Of course he will.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:39 (fifteen years ago)

Ha, I just remembered when I used to hear this on the radio, they played a version where Ne-Yo sang "Why can't I turn off [name of radio station]?" I liked imagining him in the studio, like, "All right, what's the next one? Kiss 92?"

jaymc, Friday, 21 May 2010 13:58 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i think he did do a bunch of personalized versions. the things a new artist has to do to get spins.
