It comes down to "Shake it Off" and "Don't Forget About Us" (not too fond of the other two, really) for me. It's quite close, but "Don't Forget About Us" wins. Bonus points for having the absolutely gorgeous Christian Monzon in the video ^_^

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 7 January 2006 05:14 (twenty years ago)

I'll take "We Belong Together"

ryan (ryan), Saturday, 7 January 2006 05:24 (twenty years ago)

"We Belong Together" > "Shake It Off" > "Don't Forget About Us" > "It's Like That"

I really like "It's Like That"s bridge. It's a shame the rest of the song is such tripe.

"We Belong Together" > "Shake it Off" = "Don't Forget About Us" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> "It's Like That"

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 7 January 2006 08:34 (twenty years ago)

all songs are the same.

retrogurl, Saturday, 7 January 2006 11:31 (twenty years ago)

It's the first time she's had three good-to-great back-to-back singles. "It's Like That" is just ok; it's the other three that rock.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Saturday, 7 January 2006 13:43 (twenty years ago)

I seem to be in the minority here, but I love "It's Like That." The best part is "it's like that y'all, it's like that y'all, it's like that that that that, like that y'all" and Mariah repeating the Fatman Scoop shoutouts. Perhaps I loved it because it was because it was the first single that announced her stunning comeback - "it's a special occasion, Mimi's Emancipation, a cause for celebration." I totally bought it.

Also, since "Shake It Off" was released as a double A-side with "Get Your Number." We should be talking about that as well, although they both sound oh so similar, because of Jermaine Dupri being all over both. If they release another single off of the album, it has to be "To The Floor" which is way better than anything Nelly's done recently.

danzig (danzig), Saturday, 7 January 2006 18:04 (twenty years ago)

"Shake It Off" is my favorite. I love how she sings the word "appreciates."

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 7 January 2006 18:12 (twenty years ago)

I've been disappointed with the non-singleness of "Say Somethin'"

R. J. Greene, Saturday, 7 January 2006 20:05 (twenty years ago)

It's the first time she's had three good-to-great back-to-back singles.

"One Sweet Day," "Fantasy," "Always Be My Baby"?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 7 January 2006 20:36 (twenty years ago)

We disagree.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Saturday, 7 January 2006 22:44 (twenty years ago)

Oddly enough, I don't like ANY of these but 'Shake It Off', but 'SIO' is one of the three best songs I heard this year... and I generally dislike Jermaine Dupri's production too. I have no idea why I like it so much.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 7 January 2006 23:13 (twenty years ago)

"Stay The Night" really needs to be a single.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 8 January 2006 02:15 (twenty years ago)

I've always liked Mariah's pop r/b singles but every ballad is tiresome. "We Belong Together" is my favorite of all her ballads but only by default because it's more of a song and less an excuse for boring vocal aerobics.
Personally I'd rank them this way...

"Shake It Off" > "It's Like That"> "Don't Forget About Us" > "We Belong Together"

I seem to be in the minority here, but I love "It's Like That."
-- danzig (dandan...), January 7th, 2006.

It's hard to choose the best one since I love "It's Like That" so freaking much. Such a great 1st single, wonderful fake handclap assisted rhythm and a joyful declaration of purpose. From a production and hook standpoint, it's like Lil Jon's sonic approach imporived upon greatly.

Also, perhaps "Don't Forget About Us" shouldn't be included in these rankings since it's not on the record I bought but on one of those Special Edition rip off bullshit immediate re-releases.

theodore (herbert hebert), Sunday, 8 January 2006 03:50 (twenty years ago)

We Belong Together is simply an awesome song. Had it been by anyone else, the response would have been overwhelming.

baboon2004 (baboon2004), Sunday, 8 January 2006 04:13 (twenty years ago)

"From a production and hook standpoint, it's like Lil Jon's sonic approach imporived upon greatly."

Ugh. That is the crappiest of crappy Scott Storch beats.

But the bridge is ace. "Don't Forget..." has a cool bridge too, now that I think of it.

R. J. Greene, Sunday, 8 January 2006 04:48 (twenty years ago)

Yeah you're right, I just listened to it again and it's definitely more Scott Storch-ish. Perhaps I'm connecting it to Jon due to the awesome "Here we go now What?!" breakdown chant at the end.

theodore (herbert hebert), Sunday, 8 January 2006 07:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm a little baffled by all the love directed at Mariah this year (from Drake, Sanneh, etc.) -- I haven't heard the entirety of The Emancipation of Mimi, but based on the four singles, I'm really not fond of her voice: she always sounds like she's hoarse. This wasn't always true.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 8 January 2006 07:46 (twenty years ago)

much as I love the non-ILT Mimi singles, only WBT would really stand a shot at making my Mariah top ten. One of the best singles artists of the last two decades.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 8 January 2006 10:04 (twenty years ago)

when i was in lisbon last month, they were constantly playing this mariah/dupri song called "can i get your number?" - was it not a single over here? anyways, it's fun, so add that to the discussion

dave k, Sunday, 8 January 2006 14:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm really not fond of her voice: she always sounds like she's hoarse. This wasn't always true.

Hoarse = reenforced humanity!

At the risk of sounding rockist, you're all gay.

Stirrer of Pots, Sunday, 8 January 2006 16:38 (twenty years ago)

the original "It's Like That" wasn't produced by Scott Storch, the remix was.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Sunday, 8 January 2006 23:27 (twenty years ago)

jaymc, you REALLY need to hear the entire album - it's fantastic. & maybe she sounds hoarse because she's restraining herself a smidge (for once)?

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 8 January 2006 23:35 (twenty years ago)

We Belong Together is simply an awesome song. Had it been by anyone else, the response would have been overwhelming.

utterly baffled by the love for what appears to be a completely ordinary, predictable by-numbers 'ballad'.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 9 January 2006 00:30 (twenty years ago)

I really like her "ooh"s in "We Belong Together".

Sundar (sundar), Monday, 9 January 2006 02:27 (twenty years ago)

(Huh, actually it seems they're "who"s. The ones in the chorus before she spits out "else am I gonna lean on when times get rough" or "gonna talk to me on the phone...".)

Sundar (sundar), Monday, 9 January 2006 02:32 (twenty years ago)

Al has the remixes in the right order.

We Belong Together >> It's Like That >> Shake It Off >>>>> Don't Forget About Us (yawn)

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 9 January 2006 02:42 (twenty years ago)

shat, someone wanna YSI those DFAU and "Shake" remixes?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 9 January 2006 07:52 (twenty years ago)

I'm really confused why people like "We Belong Together" so much too. I like the chorus but everything that's not the chorus seems to be almost the defintion of "killing time until the chorus hits."

But yeah, "Shake it Off" is amazing. I didn't even know it was Mariah the first twenty times I heard it, which is probably a compliment.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 9 January 2006 14:04 (twenty years ago)

maybe she sounds hoarse because she's restraining herself a smidge (for once)?

Um, no. She sounds hoarse because years of overuse have made her voice hoarse; the whisper-voice that she fell in love with a few years ago because it sounds "sexy" is particularly broken and painful-sounding.

Having said that, "It's Like That" is balls-out fantastic.

"Shake It Off" approaches unlistenable but the other two are good.

Dan (That-A-Tha-That) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 January 2006 14:09 (twenty years ago)

here you go, Bill.

We Belong Together > Get Your Number > It's Like That >>>>> Shake It Off >>>>> Don't Forget About Us

Mind Taker, Monday, 9 January 2006 14:14 (twenty years ago)

thanks MT.

And "killing time until the chorus hits"? That song is all verse.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 9 January 2006 14:21 (twenty years ago)

MT is also OTM regarding "Get Your Number" too - it samples "Just an Illusion"!

Dr. Bill wtf are you talking about, the song has a chorus.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 9 January 2006 15:06 (twenty years ago)

The biggest problem with "We Belong Together" is that the verses are unnecessarily verbose. I completely lose interest in them with the sole exception of the Babyface quotes in the second verse, both of which are much more sparing with the verbiage (oh yeah, and also from two completely different, superior songs).

Dan (Blah Blah Blah Shut Up, Mariah) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 January 2006 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't Get Your Number a single in the US?

Baaderonixx born in Xyxax (baaderonixx), Monday, 9 January 2006 15:28 (twenty years ago)

I don't think so; at the very least I've never heard it on the radio.

Dan (Not That That Means Anything) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 January 2006 15:31 (twenty years ago)

It was not. Should've been though.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 9 January 2006 15:33 (twenty years ago)

Funny, the video's been getting a lot of airplay here in europe

Baaderonixx born in Xyxax (baaderonixx), Monday, 9 January 2006 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Dr. Bill wtf are you talking about, the song has a chorus.

Thank you for this insight, Deej, I meant that the real strength in the song lies in its verses, a point which I'm pretty sure you yourself have acknowledged at multiple points.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 9 January 2006 15:46 (twenty years ago)

The verses of "We Belong Together" completely suck! They're overly wordy and sonically boring; the only time she ever gets into song mode is on the chorus (which fortunately is so great that it completely makes up for the inconsequential verses).

Dan (Songwriting 101) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 January 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

I think it's about as good/mediocre as 'Oh Baby I' by Eternal.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Monday, 9 January 2006 15:55 (twenty years ago)

'It's Like That' is OK but again hardly mind-blowing stuff. Even Coldcut put it in their 'celebrity iPod playlist' though.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Monday, 9 January 2006 15:57 (twenty years ago)

Oh OK Bill I misunderstood.

Yeah the verses rule.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 9 January 2006 15:58 (twenty years ago)

"Don't Forget About Us" is the most fun.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 9 January 2006 16:01 (twenty years ago)

The verses of "We Belong Together" completely suck! They're overly wordy and sonically boring; the only time she ever gets into song mode is on the chorus (which fortunately is so great that it completely makes up for the inconsequential verses).

wordiness isn't necessarily a bad thing, especially when the words are lines like "the pain reflected in this song ain't even half of what I'm feeling inside"--a line which is so obscured by the verse's wordiness that I didn't realize how awesome it was until like the 25th listen. That's a good thing, I think.

As for sonically boring, the way Mariah's voice shifts with each line in the "Bobby Womack's on the radio" segment is pretty undeniably striking.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 9 January 2006 16:02 (twenty years ago)

wordiness isn't necessarily a bad thing

Yes I know, hence "overly".

especially when the words are lines like "the pain reflected in this song ain't even half of what I'm feeling inside"--a line which is so obscured by the verse's wordiness that I didn't realize how awesome it was until like the 25th listen. That's a good thing, I think.

It's a good thing that you didn't realize that there was a good line in one of the verses because there were too many other words in the way?

the way Mariah's voice shifts with each line in the "Bobby Womack's on the radio"

Maybe it's just me but didn't I say upthread that those quotes were the only things in the song that worked? I misattributed the first one to Babyface but I think the bulk of my original point still stands.

Dan (And Never The Twain Shall Meet) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

It's a good thing that you didn't realize that there was a good line in one of the verses because there were too many other words in the way?

When I'm still discovering new stuff in a top 40 song twenty listens down the road--especially for a song I was inevitably going to hear that many times--yeah, I'd say that's a good thing. It's not like the line had bothered me previously, anyway.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:12 (twenty years ago)

You are so dependable, Alex.

"We Belong Together" was the #25 single on Pazz & Jop that year.

Not high enough, obv. I mean, "George Bush Doesn't Care About Black People"?

The Reverend, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 23:37 (eighteen years ago)

"We Belong Together" was #19, actually.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 23:49 (eighteen years ago)

Well, in terms of critical response, I remember the New Yorker piece all but going down on her. which is huge for any popstar, in my mind.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 00:12 (eighteen years ago)

Seriously, though, who the hell listens to this shit?? This past summer, I was sitting out at my sister's place out in "The Hamptons," and some neighbor was absolutely BLASTING fuckin' "Emotions" (as in "you've got me feelin'...") by Mariah, and I was absolutely incredulous. Who the fuck enjoys this inane shit (let alone BLASTS it)?

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 01:51 (eighteen years ago)

Because it's a good song?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 01:59 (eighteen years ago)

otm

The Reverend, Sunday, 16 May 2010 06:52 (sixteen years ago)

i'm not super-huge on mariah-isms, but they are weilded so effectively on this song that the entire existence of such a thing is justified

The Reverend, Sunday, 16 May 2010 06:54 (sixteen years ago)

there are tons of great parts of the song, but it could all be almost too ordinary in a way, at least from a songwriting standpoint, but that second verse is a really subtle way of making it stand out from your ordinary tear jerker

contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 16 May 2010 06:54 (sixteen years ago)

still lol at wonky mariah lyrics tho

The Reverend, Sunday, 16 May 2010 06:54 (sixteen years ago)

what u mean

contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 16 May 2010 06:55 (sixteen years ago)

i guess what i'm trying to say is that the verbosity is totally a strength in this song, exactly because it subtly sets it apart from Y.O.T.J.

The Reverend, Sunday, 16 May 2010 06:56 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, like how they manage to fit "who else gonna talk to me on the phone till the sun comes up" in there w/o tripping up the chorus, it's really cool phrasing

contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 16 May 2010 06:56 (sixteen years ago)

I mean this song is like 5x as wordy as Y.O.T.J. at least!

The Reverend, Sunday, 16 May 2010 06:56 (sixteen years ago)

this is key, but the radio is pretty much a macguffin. the real drama of the song, has nothing to do with the radio, and not even that much to do with the guy. it's all about mariah vs herself!
