Then: overhyped sensation fades to oblivion
Now: overhyped sensation ........?

"oblivion"

j blount (papa la bas), Saturday, 7 January 2006 07:23 (twenty years ago)

cherry EASY

j blount (papa la bas), Saturday, 7 January 2006 07:23 (twenty years ago)

"Buffalo Stance" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> anything MIA will ever conceive of

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 7 January 2006 07:49 (twenty years ago)

EXACTLY.

xero (xero), Saturday, 7 January 2006 07:54 (twenty years ago)

yes DEFINITELY CLEARLY and i LIKE mia.

j blount (papa la bas), Saturday, 7 January 2006 07:59 (twenty years ago)

i wish i could in good conscience buck the nascent consensus, because i really like mia. but song for song, raw like sushi beats arular with a stick.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Saturday, 7 January 2006 08:14 (twenty years ago)

the backlash begins (finally!)

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 7 January 2006 08:16 (twenty years ago)

For me this T/S just comes down to the unparalleled fucking rulingness that is "Buffalo Stance." If and when M.I.A does something on that level I'll buy it happily but I'm not holding my breath.

xero (xero), Saturday, 7 January 2006 08:17 (twenty years ago)

kooky brits aggrandize passe trifle hit shockah

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Saturday, 7 January 2006 08:18 (twenty years ago)

What brits?

xero (xero), Saturday, 7 January 2006 08:19 (twenty years ago)

ok, i am shocked.

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Saturday, 7 January 2006 08:21 (twenty years ago)

And what passe trifle hit? NAME ME ONE SONG THAT IS BETTER THAN "BUFFALO STANCE," GOD DAMN IT.

xero (xero), Saturday, 7 January 2006 08:23 (twenty years ago)

"Buffalo Stance" happens to be one of my all-time fave singles, but I still concur with gypsy mothra's comment. Wake me up when MIA creates something remotely close to the quality of Neneh Cherry's debut.

xxxpost no brits on this thread yet!

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 7 January 2006 08:25 (twenty years ago)

i don't think this constitutes a backlash barry! esp since the people who were upping mia in the first place were doing it pretty often pretty vocally on the basis 'maybe she'll be another neneh cherry' (maybe she will!)(and this was before anyone even knew the 'she's got a rock n roll past' or 'her dad's SO RADICAL' parallels). TONS of folx have never come close to equalling 'buffalo stance'.

j blount (papa la bas), Saturday, 7 January 2006 08:27 (twenty years ago)

yeah i'm not lashing back. i like arular lots. i just can't take anything away from raw like sushi (not even mentioning the lots of good stuff on homebrew, 'i've got you under my skin,' her work on blue lines, etc.).

also neneh is now a grandmother?

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Saturday, 7 January 2006 08:29 (twenty years ago)

I was being somewhat tongue-in-cheek about the backlash thing but I honestly have never heard these "maybe she'll be another Neneh Cherry" comments (it's quite possible I wasn't paying close enough attention).

I don't dislike MIA, but nevertheless, Neneh's singles obliterate Maya's at the very least and if enough people agree with this then all those Best of 2005 Lists start looking a bit silly considering how underappreciated Neneh Cherry is these days.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 7 January 2006 08:35 (twenty years ago)

In fairness nothing else on Raw Like Sushi grabs me like "Buffalo Stance," though "Kisses on the Wind" and "So Here I Come" are pretty great, but I still like that album way more than Arular.

Grandmother? Wow.

xero (xero), Saturday, 7 January 2006 08:37 (twenty years ago)

raw like sushi was #5 in p&j, so it's not like it was overlooked.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Saturday, 7 January 2006 08:53 (twenty years ago)

there really isn't much in the world that's BETTER than "buffalo stance."

miss michael learned (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 7 January 2006 08:54 (twenty years ago)

I claimed it was "overlooked these days" ... my perception could be proved wrong (to some degree) once we see the results of the ILM 80's poll (subtle hint). "Raw Like Sushi" wasn't nominated but "Buffalo Stance" (my #4) and "Manchild" were.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 7 January 2006 09:14 (twenty years ago)

I heard loads of people comparing MIA to Neneh Cherry, and it's in the light of Neneh that MIA's flaws become all the more obvious. She ain't got the songs, and everything I remember off even Neneh's third album was pretty damn good (Well, "Woman" and "Feel It" were corking singles, anyway).

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 7 January 2006 10:42 (twenty years ago)

Then: overhyped sensation fades to oblivion

Sadly not, she did taht Seven Seconds duet. Still I completely adored her. Raw Like Sushi was just complete perfection. The follow-up was also great, but only after I really gave it a try. It wasn't love at first sight (or listen).

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Saturday, 7 January 2006 10:58 (twenty years ago)

MIA is just Neneh Cherry for people who prefer white guilt to actually decent songs.

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 7 January 2006 12:07 (twenty years ago)

time has not been kind to "Buffalo Stance," assuming it was ever good to begin with. Fuck that shit.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 7 January 2006 12:10 (twenty years ago)

I figure time's going to be even *less* kind to MIA if you put it like that, Dr. Bill. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 7 January 2006 14:09 (twenty years ago)

i've always hated 'buffalo stance' for that rap in the middle where she swaps from London rude girl to New York drawl. i was, like, 7, and i found it the most irritating thing in the world, but the rest of the recod kills, yes. but i prefer MIA... loved 'manchild' though - is the rest of the album worth tracking down?

i am not a nugget (stevie), Saturday, 7 January 2006 14:20 (twenty years ago)

"Kisses on the Wind"!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Saturday, 7 January 2006 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Good Lord, "Kisses On The Wind" is the best fusion of hip-hop and Miami freestyle EVAH, and
"Buffalo Stance" is one of the songs that Officially Got Me Interested In This Rap Stuff (tm).

MIA's talented and all, but my money is still on Lady Sovereign for cheeky UK gal rappers.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 7 January 2006 15:15 (twenty years ago)

" is the rest of the album worth tracking down?"

If you like I can upload it. Email me. stevienixed at gmail dot com

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Saturday, 7 January 2006 15:31 (twenty years ago)

I don't really like 'Manchild' although I probably should.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Saturday, 7 January 2006 15:58 (twenty years ago)

sure, Buffalo Stance remains a very good song, despite the dated elements. i've never found what was so special about the rest of the album, but am willing to believe it's there. and i'll accept for purposes of argument that it's better than any MIA song. but I think MIA is a little less about songform, Arular does a lot for me as a record, and in 2005 I'll take her in a heartbeat.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 7 January 2006 16:21 (twenty years ago)

OK, someone didn't get the memo

disco violence (disco violence), Saturday, 7 January 2006 17:14 (twenty years ago)

Let's just say there is a 500+ post thread I started where y'all were like "OMG THIS WILL RULE"

disco violence (disco violence), Saturday, 7 January 2006 17:16 (twenty years ago)

There were also loads of us who weren't on the M.I.A. bandwagon a year ago. I sure as fuck wasn't.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 7 January 2006 17:17 (twenty years ago)

though to be fair:
a) most of the "arular sux0rz" people on this thread weren't on the other one
b) most of the contributors to this thread are actually being reasonable and not "WHITE GUILT WOOP WOOP" idiots
c) I'm in a bad mood, per usual

disco violence (disco violence), Saturday, 7 January 2006 17:19 (twenty years ago)

what's the difference between liking an artist and being on her bandwagon?

it gradually dawned on me that my life is so crazy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 7 January 2006 17:20 (twenty years ago)

"liking an artist" = artist is unpopular or a VH1 footnote
"bandwagon" = HIPSTER FAVORITE OH NO

disco violence (disco violence), Saturday, 7 January 2006 17:22 (twenty years ago)

And all this time i was thinking Martina Topley-Bird was the new Neneh Cherry...

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Saturday, 7 January 2006 17:26 (twenty years ago)

I am not hating on Neneh but long strings of >s and usages of the term "obliterate" and "2005 lists with MIA on them will look silly in the future" wouldn't be used if we were comparing Cherry to some other Richard X-produced pop/club act without the deconstructionist's-playground backstory and the marketing push and the P&J Top 5 likelihood and the "wacky" MTV2 commercials where that one smarmy indie kid goes "GALANGALANGALANG"

disco violence (disco violence), Saturday, 7 January 2006 17:27 (twenty years ago)

(Did she have an NME cover or something?)

disco violence (disco violence), Saturday, 7 January 2006 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Whatevs. Like I said upthread, M.I.A. I can take or leave. I'm one of those horrifyingly unhip people who discovers things after all the cool kids have jumped ship, which means I'll borrow somebody's copy of "Arular" some time in 2007. Hell, I only just discovered the "Maps" reference in K. Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone", despite it being referenced by everyone's sister's friend's cousin's blog all this past year. My point being: not everyone here is a rabid trend-watcher or next-big-thing seeker.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 7 January 2006 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Which someone would OBVIOUSLY have to be to pick up and like Arular

disco violence (disco violence), Saturday, 7 January 2006 17:34 (twenty years ago)

I bought it on double LP; I'm the Faith Popcorn of this pop shit

disco violence (disco violence), Saturday, 7 January 2006 17:36 (twenty years ago)

though to be fair:
a) most of the "arular sux0rz" people on this thread weren't on the other one

I agree -- this thread exists so that people who weren't high on MIA to begin with can contextualize her music and have a "Eureka!" moment at the same time. Maybe some fence-sitters will get swept up and bring out their claws too.

I don't understand how one can pull out the "dated" criticisms about a 17-year old single. Of course it's dated, almost everything dates. Songs that *don't* date should be complimented, but that shouldn't be considered the norm when re-evaluating music from two decades ago.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 7 January 2006 18:29 (twenty years ago)

i'd take neneh, monie, cookie crew, or wee papa girls over mia, but mia isn't done yet. she may end up surprising me.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 7 January 2006 18:37 (twenty years ago)

only one of them was in Rip Rig and Panic and Float Up CP.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 7 January 2006 18:38 (twenty years ago)

Man is totally better than Homebrew.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 7 January 2006 18:39 (twenty years ago)

i was sure this thread had jumped the shark for good, and then selzer brought it back with the rip rig and panic mention.

it gradually dawned on me that my life is so crazy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 7 January 2006 18:39 (twenty years ago)

did anybody mention that Neneh Cherry was on that Gorillaz album?

Zwan (miccio), Saturday, 7 January 2006 18:41 (twenty years ago)

I wish they'd base a Big Brother season on the guest list on that thing.

Zwan (miccio), Saturday, 7 January 2006 18:41 (twenty years ago)

i think neneh vs lady sovereign is a good comparison but a better one is monie love vs lady sov. mia was fun live but im still not sold on her yet.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 7 January 2006 18:43 (twenty years ago)

xp: "PULL UP THE PEOPLE" IS "FEEBLE"?

I hope we're not gonna map this on a sliding scale starting from Bright Eyes and ending with (??) but, yeah. I don't think her songs are anything close to the firecrackers they could/should be. Yet.

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 7 January 2006 18:48 (twenty years ago)

neneh cherry on pulp's "seductive barry", c/d?

the WOT IS HE LOIKE ANYWAY part sux0rz but the rest of "buffalo stance" is no-holds-barred classic

m.i.a. has better hair than neneh. although i don't know what neneh's hair looks like these days.

has anyone ever heard neneh's sister Titiyo? (Titiyo is kinda fun to say.)

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 7 January 2006 19:02 (twenty years ago)

It's true that Neneh has never had great hair.

I think his pic is from 1997, and it's an improvement on her late-80's frizz:

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 7 January 2006 20:37 (twenty years ago)

mia vs. neneh patronizes both of them

i'll take mia anyway. galang is better than buffalo stance and who can remember what else was on homebrew anyway--i'm sure none of you neneh-jockers have listened to it in the last ten years

bugged out, Saturday, 7 January 2006 22:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm astounded that noone has mentioned the Sugababes. Didn't her husband, Cameron McVey (?) produce their debut?

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Saturday, 7 January 2006 22:07 (twenty years ago)

I used to adore Homebrew about 10 years ago, and certainly have listened to it in the last couple of years. I remember it striking older me as more notably earnest (younger me valued earnestness more, I suspect) but I can't remember if it sounded too earnest. Maybe only the Michael Stipe track?

It's a rather prescient record, sonically.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 7 January 2006 22:21 (twenty years ago)

"Together Now" aside, her sessions with Tricky were never released, were they?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 7 January 2006 22:22 (twenty years ago)

i like homebrew. i used to have it on vinyl, so i really had it.

i just find the comparison annoying. they don't have much in common.

bugged out, Saturday, 7 January 2006 22:24 (twenty years ago)

where's the derek b vs. dizzee rascal thread, anyway?

bugged out, Saturday, 7 January 2006 22:28 (twenty years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 7 January 2006 22:44 (twenty years ago)

I'm astounded that noone has mentioned the Sugababes. Didn't her husband, Cameron McVey (?) produce their debut?

And "Stronger" by the Babes is a totally "Manchild" moment.

Neneh's sister Titiyo has some fun songs. "My Body Says Yes" from 1991 was a quite good dance-pop single of its time, and "Come Along" from a few years back was lovely.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 8 January 2006 01:26 (twenty years ago)

"Together Now" aside, her sessions with Tricky were never released, were they?

No... sadly, neither were his sessions with Grace Jones.

"Together Now" was a great song, though.

holy crap the new Neneh Cherry/The Thing "The Cherry Thing" album is fine.
"Dream Baby Dream" = BAM

mr.raffles, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 20:08 (thirteen years ago)

Yep, the new album is sounding beautiful tonight. Only two listens in, but it sounds like a keeper atm.

I know there is another thread people are posting on more for the Cherry Thing but this one kinda intrigued me - I don't really see the comparison between M.I.A and NC. Paper Planes is as good as Buffalo Stance imo. I've not heard Raw Like Sushi for an age - probably TWENTY YEARS since I last heard it. I loved it when I was 12. I guess I should check out the third album also - people repping for it massively above.
