I searched and could not find a C/D or S&D thread devoted to the mighty Sabs.Is it a given that they were ultra-classic,once upon a time? Were they ever scary?Alright, maybe when I was a younger boy with the fear of God,they might have been freaky, but as I get older it seems more like campy.

Damian, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This doesn't really answer your question very well, but.. there's a sitcom now called "The Osbournes"--the life of Ozzy and his family=family comedy? Premiere is tomorrow I think. Whatever happened to snorting ants? New Ozzy: dud.

geeta, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They churned out planet-chomping riffs like no band ever had a right to. I played my tape of "We sold our soul for rock n' roll" yesterday morning. Alas, it's fuXored. *sob* CLASSIC CLASSIC CLASSIC CLASSIC

Michael Bourke, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I Loved Black Sabbath. Those riffs, that hair, those threads, crazy, the noise, but then i was only 13 and living at the arse end of the world. On the rare occasion i'll go back and have a quick listen to the first album or Masters of Reality and i try to find what i was so ape shit over. A couple of okay riffs but the mix is so muddy and you can only take so much of Ozzy's ball clenching octaves so i usually leave disappointed and wonder why i bothered. A 70's Classic, a 2002 dirge.

Honest Harry, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

classic, obviously. and they were ripped of by joy division no end. atrocious lyrics though

owen hatherley, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

C-L-A-S-S-I-C...but only up through NEVER SAY DIE. Once Ozzy left, it all became rather moot (although MOB RULES is Ronnie James Dio's finest hour). Actually, the rot set in before NEVER SAY DIE. Their high point for my money remains the completely, untouchably sublime PARANOID album, which -- despite cover art that looks like an outtake from a low-budget homage to "The Blair Witch Project -- has nary a bad track on it.

Alex in NYC, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

good music to put on the juke box in a dodgy pub.

fields of salmon, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The early stuff is good; my favorite LP is probably "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath". Also, in all my record-collecting years, I've never seen a copy of "4" with the page thats supposed to be glued inside the gatefold. Did everyone that owned this rip it out?

Sean, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, not everyone ripped it out. I used to have a copy with the inner photo folder thing, but sold it. Anyway, Vol. 4 is great, esp. for the ode to cocaine, "Snowblind."

hstencil, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got the VOLUME FOUR with the pages still in it. Basically, it's got live shots of the band (featuring a very young looking Ozzy and a tartan-blazered Geezer Butler playing a translucent bass) Best track on that album, though, has got to be "Supernaut"....the drum solo in the middle of which being the closest the band ever got to being legitimately funky!

Alex in NYC, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic for all the early tunes that are required for middle schoolers learning to play guitar and jamming in basement bands.

I've always thought Heaven & Hell was one of their best, certainly Dio's finest hour (for me his only hour).

Jordan, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic, yurp. It's all about Sabotage, baby.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually LIKE "Born Again" with Ian Gillian. They went from singing praise for Lucifer to overdriven odes to drunk driving.... Anyone who likes Sabbath should check out the new release from Pentagram that just came out on Relapse a week ago, called "First Daze Here" featuring singles and demos from '72-'76.... a blend of Sabbath and Blue Cheer riffing with super-satanic lyrics... I've been playing it everyday.

Andy, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Paranoid is the greatest ever heavy metal single and album. Being laughable for so long since only makes Ozzy more wonderful. He even poked his nose in on the WWF briefly, as something like a manager of someone or other.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

absolute fuxing classic. I don't think they were ever scary (for scary, try rod mckuen and the san sebastian strings - *shudder*) but that thick rich sound they had is awesome & truly original & groundbreaking in its time. As whoever above said - search everything up to "Never Say Die", but especially vol.4

Norman Phay, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic.

sundar subramanian, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I should have also included a sub-question about the little interludes they used to put on their albums. You could really have tricked worried parents by playing Laguna Sunrise.I can well imagine the reaction those would have brought out in a few metallers, but if every album was but one riff-monster after another,it'd be all a bit dull, right? While I'm on the subject, the sequencing of Master Of Reality = genius.

Damian, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The first four are the best and are probably a bit underrated on the rawk album sweepstakes.

Before I heard and found punk, Sabbath was the meanest of the music. The name alone used to freak out some kids.

Mind you this was back in like 5th or 6th grade in the early 80s, now these same kids today would probably be into Cannibal Corpse and downloading meth recipes off the net.

It's all about Sabotage, baby.

And now that I'm listening to this again today, let me say it again. Is "Megalomania" in the quiet parts the true influence on the weird creepy quiet parts on Def Leppard's "Foolin'"?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i think there's not a day to go by that i don't listen to sabbath

There are days when I think that Black Sabbath are truly the greatest band EVAH. Those first five albums are totally unfuckwithable.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 11 March 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

First six!!

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 11 March 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I stick with the first three, though Sabotage has some nice stuff.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 11 March 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Good point, Anthony. Why would anyone have any use for Vol 4?

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 11 March 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

got me. I was pretty disappointed when I threw it on recently.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 11 March 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

the copy I have is burnt so I don't know the titles but I think I dug "Supernaut," the first track and little else.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 11 March 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it just me or does the first side of the Paranoid LP get LOUDER as it goes along?

SexyDancer, Thursday, 11 March 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the copy I have is burnt so I don't know the titles but I think I dug "Supernaut," the first track and little else.

i'm gasping and sputtering like a fish out of water having a seizure.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 11 March 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Why would anyone have any use for Vol 4?

Why, for "Supernaut" and "Cornucopia" and "Tomorrow's Dream" and the massive "Wheels of Confusion", of course!

(plus a couple-three pointless space-fillers/time-wasters but nevermind.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 12 March 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Sabotage has some nice stuff.

AN UNDERSTATEMENT.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 March 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The first time I got stoned I was 12 years old and listening to "Planet Caravan" on "Paranoid." Ah, semi-memories.

shookout, Friday, 12 March 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic, of course.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
What kind of madness prompted the band to include 'F/X' as an album track?

57 7th (calstars), Monday, 14 March 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

Why would anyone have any use for Vol 4?

Why, for "Supernaut" and "Cornucopia" and "Tomorrow's Dream" and the massive "Wheels of Confusion", of course!

WTF!? Why is there so much Vol 4 hate? SNOWBLIND! Changes is pretty much the worst Sabbath song so I'm guessing that's why people have a problem with the album. Most of their albums have some crappy filler though so what's the big deal? St. Vitus Dance is a good song too BTW. And Wheels of Confusion, Supernaut and Snowblind are possibly the greatest Sabbath songs that don't get overplayed to death (if you're a bit tired of hearing Sweet Leaf/Iron Man/Paranoid/WarPigs et al.)

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 14 March 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

I was being sarcastic when I wrote that. Vol 4 is my favorite Sabbath. And "F/X" is only a minute long so I'm not sure why 57 7th is bothered.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 14 March 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

"Cornucopia" is complete madness, there's like 20 riffs in that thing. I think they tuned down to like C for the intro.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 14 March 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah. Your sarcasm is pretty obvious upon 2nd reading. I read some Vol 4 hate in another thread recently so I thought it was a trend.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 14 March 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

after a week of non-stop listening, I have decided that sabotage is probably their finest hour.

akm, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

whoever whenever says sabotage's great, is for ever my friend-ah! :)

t**t, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

Stone cold fucking classic up through and including "Born Again".

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

Nice to see a bit of Born Again love for a change

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

Love it despite it being one of the most horrendous mixing/mastering/producing/engineering jobs(I'm a layman so I don't know which to blame) of all time.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

I just found Never Say Die for like four bucks and I had never heard it so I grabbed it. Shock Wave!!! What a song. I was thrilled. Haven't listened to the rest yet but I already got my money's worth.

Love it despite it being one of the most horrendous mixing/mastering/producing/engineering jobs(I'm a layman so I don't know which to blame) of all time.

Martin Popoff's excellent Sabbath book touches on that, the lacquers were left sitting around too long before pressing, and the sound got all distorted as a result. A major, major screw-up, but I kind of like the peculiar density of "Zero the Hero". Still, a remastered Born Again would be great to hear.

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 01:03 (eighteen years ago)

The Popoff book is fantastic. I read that anecdote, if I remember correctly, one of the band members was skeptical about that explanation. I've been meaning to track down his Blue Oyster Cult one, hopefully it's as good.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

if it hasn't been mentioned yet in this thread (scrolling is hard work), the born again demos give you an idea of how that album should've sounded.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 25 October 2007 05:14 (eighteen years ago)

Those easy to find?

Bill Magill, Thursday, 25 October 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

i got them on soulseek. but a google search of blogspot.com for the obvious search terms brought up a bunch of hits.

Everyone who told me to get Sabotage and I didn't listen. Oh my god I'm so sorry. That is really the first Sabbath album I've heard where I can enjoy the whole thing. Though I used to have the deluxe Reunion CD and I'm sorry to say I don't have the damn thing anymore.

This band were the birth of goth, I really believe this.

But yeah, Sabotage is just the absolute deal. I don't know what to say. That album is just the absolute deal.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Friday, 22 August 2008 06:00 (seventeen years ago)

Wow, CLASSIC example of me not getting the point way upthread, totally missing Broheems/Stormy's obvious-to-anyone-who-isn't-me irony re Vol. 4 - especially considering he praised the first six just two posts previous! Maybe I was being extra-sarcastic myself, but it doesn't read that way. Weird...

Myonga Vön Bontee, Friday, 22 August 2008 13:53 (seventeen years ago)

Haha. I totally fell asleep during their set @ Winterland in 1973. It's kind of like the episode of Dick Van Dyke where he's questioned by the police, and his albi is he was at the movies seeing Guns of Navarone, but he can't give a plot synopsis 'cause he fell asleep.

I was there to see Yes, Wild Turkey opened, Sabbath headlined.
