the new album, Womanizer, is great. listen to the samples of "High Heels & Fishnet Stockings", "Rough Love(Tender Heart)", and "Beerrun". way better than that Darkness crap.

I thought Miccio's new favourite band would be The Fray?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 8 January 2006 01:31 (twenty years ago)

I thought this was going to be about some kind of Fred Durst/REM supergroup.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Sunday, 8 January 2006 01:36 (twenty years ago)

their "beerrun" is not as good as todd snider's "beer run"

OMG, the "Opus Suite" is so sweet. Dude can play his ass off. i wish you could hear the whole thing and not just a sample. it's like eruption x 100, dude.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 8 January 2006 01:49 (twenty years ago)

man there are no words I fear worse than "Anthony, you're gonna love this." Usually just reaffirms how little the person must think of me. But I respect you enough to check this out, Scott.

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 8 January 2006 02:23 (twenty years ago)

Listening to Beer Run now. The music's a little more 'dark,' more Judas than I'm usually into (probably why you prefer this to the Darkness), but its got that Dio enunciation I dig and its funny.

The guitar solo just took this song somewhere awesome. The singer could tighten his game up enough a little to match it, but oh man that was sweet. Thanks!

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 8 January 2006 02:27 (twenty years ago)

Have you heard the new Darkness album, Scott? Roy Thomas Baker added all kinds of Queenage to boost the sound. I recommend "Knockers," "Hazel Eyes" and "Girlfriend."

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 8 January 2006 02:29 (twenty years ago)

They're still writing in the happy mode though - there's only one track "Bald," that sounds halfway menacing.

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 8 January 2006 02:30 (twenty years ago)

Anthony, I really love what you've done with this thread.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Sunday, 8 January 2006 02:31 (twenty years ago)

Anthony, you're so right about that solo. I haven't heard anything like that since, probably, 1986 or 87.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 8 January 2006 02:33 (twenty years ago)

Listen to High Heels & Fishnet Stockings. It's lighter fare. Meanwhile, the acoustic ballad, Juicy Lucy? Total genius.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 8 January 2006 02:34 (twenty years ago)

I'm listening to the other samples now. They're not as good as Electric Six, but I appreciate the effort.

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 8 January 2006 02:38 (twenty years ago)

BTW, Senor Smoke comes out in the U.S. in early February on Metropolis (E6 is now labelmates with Peter Murphy, VNV Nation, Mindless Self Indulgence & Front 242!). My housemate already got a promo copy. Scott, if you haven't gotten a copy already, get one.

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 8 January 2006 02:39 (twenty years ago)

wow, electric six, talk about a blast from the past. dangah! dangah! they were funny. that was that jack white guy, right? yeah, some of that nu-rock explosion stuff was funny.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 8 January 2006 02:43 (twenty years ago)

hear the new album, scott. It doesn't have solos like these guys (man ok this "Opus Suite" is fucking awesome) but it doesn't plod and the songs are unfuckwithable.

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 8 January 2006 02:45 (twenty years ago)

Metropolis is a cool label. even if i'm not a big kmfdm fan.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 8 January 2006 02:46 (twenty years ago)

"Opus Suite" reminds me of all the neo-classical shredder stuff like Tony MacAlpine and Vinnie Moore that drove the 13-year-old me completely wild.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 8 January 2006 02:51 (twenty years ago)

it's awesome.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 8 January 2006 02:54 (twenty years ago)

see, i think i really only like the neo-party/power/epic metal stuff if the playing is great. cuz then it gives me something more to listen to than just a gag or joke. i don't really even consider the darkness a metal band, but they always sounded like kind of a shitty band to me. it's kinda like how an indie or punk band would do one metal tune in a "ha ha" way but they would play it at 3 miles an hour cuz they didn't know how to play! it's so much more satisfying to hear a band do it right.

having said that, i think the songs on the absolute steel album are great! way catchy.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 8 January 2006 02:58 (twenty years ago)

I really don't think the playing on the singles from the last Darkness album are bad (some album tracks lagged), or on anything from the new album. Maybe you mean in a progressive way or something.

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 8 January 2006 03:04 (twenty years ago)

Don't watch the videos though, cuz its gonna make you think about the 'ha ha' thing which I bet bothers you more than their 'playing'

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 8 January 2006 03:05 (twenty years ago)

it never sounded that exciting to me. kinda plodding. i dunno, i read that first album completely differently than a lot of people. to me, it really did sound like some weird local 70's pub rock band gone glam a bit. actually, i think they got shortchanged when people compared them to hair metal or whatever. they were a tad unique. but they are no Angel, you know?

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 8 January 2006 03:09 (twenty years ago)

you would like Angel, by the way. 70's hard rock. the poor man's Kiss. except i listen to them way more than Kiss. (and you still need the first Starz album in case you haven't heard it.)

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 8 January 2006 03:10 (twenty years ago)

I liked the singles a lot. They're good love songs, catchy, lots of fun. Danceable. The new album plays off of that. But you have to like the kind of metal band that plays love songs.

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 8 January 2006 03:11 (twenty years ago)

i love love songs. i kinda hate that dude's voice though.

oh god, Juicy Lucy is the bomb. It's my single of the year.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 8 January 2006 03:15 (twenty years ago)

I have to admit Juicy Lucy sounded pretty shitty to me, at least on that sample.
