Don't let your fingers dangle in the water
And don't you worry about the day-glow orange life preservers
It won't save you, it won't save you.
Swim for the shores just as fast as you're able
Swim like a motherfucker.

Well, as long as you include Buena =-).

Harrison Barr (Petar), Sunday, 8 January 2006 19:54 (twenty years ago)

In Spite of Me might actually be my favorite Morphine track -- and one of my favorite songs, period. It's got a Leonard Cohen self-seriousness and some lullabyish 6-string noodling that makes me wish the band had more regularly incorporated guitar-work. Though Sandman's voice is initially jarring, the gravel-tone affectation works as counterpoint to the lacy-ornate instrumentals. And the bassline reminds me of a heartbeat after sex.

What about favorite Morphine album?

Harrison Barr (Petar), Sunday, 8 January 2006 20:09 (twenty years ago)

Cure for Pain by the numbers, but Yes isn't far behind.

remy (x Jeremy), Sunday, 8 January 2006 20:16 (twenty years ago)

I gotta agree with you there.

Harrison Barr (Petar), Sunday, 8 January 2006 20:18 (twenty years ago)

baby, disco is fuck (yournullfame), Sunday, 8 January 2006 20:28 (twenty years ago)

They're also kind of special to me because they're one of the bands that my brother introduced me to back when I thought he was the coolest guy in the world..He put Buena on a mix, I think, and that was how I got into them.

Harrison Barr (Petar), Sunday, 8 January 2006 20:31 (twenty years ago)

I like when Mark Sandman said they're "low rock...fuck rock". Because it's true.

nklshs, Sunday, 8 January 2006 20:35 (twenty years ago)

"Whisper"
"Speaking My Language"
"Thursday"
"I'm Free Now"
"Mary Won't You Call My Name"
"Candy"
"Patience" (on the Sandman 2-disc retrospective)
"Buena" infuckingdeed
"All Your Way" for being pop as fuck out of nowhere
that one that's called "[Something] -> Test Tube Man"

Honorable mention goes to "Gone For Good" because, though he didn't realize it, it is some fucked up post-mortem heaviest-of-heavy shit.

Onlookers thought shark victim was joking

BRISBANE, Australia: A 21-year-old Australian woman killed at the weekend by as many as three sharks desperately called for help as she was attacked but beachgoers thought she was joking, police said yesterday.

Police yesterday closed popular tourist beaches around North Stradbroke Island, east of the state capital Brisbane, as they hunted up to three sharks believed to be involved in Saturday's attack.

Witnesses told local media that both of the woman's arms were bitten off and she also suffered massive wounds to her legs and torso in Australia's 10th fatal shark attack since 2000.

Police inspector Peter Harding said the woman, from Brisbane, was swimming with three friends from a church group when she was attacked.

"She went down under the water ... after about five or six seconds the deceased came out of the water and screamed, 'Shark!' And of course, people at the time thought she was only joking ... until they saw the blood," he told reporters.

A rescue helicopter airlifted the woman to a Brisbane hospital within minutes of the attack but she died of her injuries late on Saturday.

"She was bleeding quite heavily," Harding said.

"I'm of the opinion (from) what I've seen and what I've been told that there was more than one shark involved there could have been up to three."

Harding said local beaches had been closed as police and fishermen hunted the predators, believed to be bull sharks, which are renowned for their aggressive behaviour during mating season.

"If we found them I suppose we would try to retrieve them and see if they have any body parts," he said. "Realistically it's virtually impossible ... the idea is to retrieve what we can."

In a grim coincidence, the attack took place off Amity Beach, which has the same name as the fictional island setting of the Hollywood man-eating shark classic "Jaws."

Harding said the sharks attacked near a deep-water trench known as Rainbow Channel, which locals usually avoided.

took an extend vacation this past Dec., and ended up doing some good long sittin and drinkin w/ the old pals whilst playing all the Morphine albums(ok, almost all not the 2nd to last who's name escapes me), back to back...
wanna talk about a great band, but man, whatta downer it is sometimes, and yet other times, it's a background to a great party that everybody's singing with!

it's also very 'blow my fuckin head off, please' music...
which is not to say it's bad, it can just bring out some really guilty/self-loathing feelings.
