Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:34 (twenty years ago)

wot no oval remixes?

i think i have most of this, actually, but it will be very nice to have it all in one place.

cancer prone fat guy (dubplatestyle), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:38 (twenty years ago)

I've somehow resisted seeking out most of this stuff in the hopes that someday it would all be collected in one go.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:39 (twenty years ago)

i'm into it.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:39 (twenty years ago)

neither of the djed remixes either - the best thing they ever did, i reckon

Robin Goad (rgoad), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:40 (twenty years ago)

i was just listening to the James Blood Ulmber album No Wave from 1980 and thinking how much it sounded like Tortoise. i thought a) there's nothing they've done that's original and b) it really doesn't sound that bad and maybe i should pull out one of their cds (or at least an isotope record)

jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 9 January 2006 18:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm into this, if it's not too expensive. CTA is one of my favorite Tortoise tracks.

I've been listening a lot to these two albums which make me think of alternate/improved versions of Tortoise.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 9 January 2006 18:36 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, I think I've only got "Didjeridoo" and the Stereolab bits off this lot. Looks sweet.

Excelsior Syndrum (noodle vague), Monday, 9 January 2006 18:44 (twenty years ago)

no derrick carter remixes? GAY.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 9 January 2006 19:05 (twenty years ago)

since there's no Oval mixes on this set:

Bubble Economy _Tortoise vs. Oval

jed_ (jed), Monday, 9 January 2006 19:15 (twenty years ago)

Hey thanks Jed!

Well obviously it's not everything but still looks excellent - and reminds me to get those Headz compilations out again - they were great (althugh - as a side issue) I think I marginally preferred Headz 1 to 2). And I'd like to hear that "As You Said" as I never got round to buying that particular tribute album. Be nice to get some stuff on CD rather than my wrecked vinyl copies as well.

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Monday, 9 January 2006 19:19 (twenty years ago)

nice. gamera & goriri are 2 of my all-time tortoise faves. no madison ave, though?

6335, Monday, 9 January 2006 19:39 (twenty years ago)

thanks jed!

adamrl (nordicskilla), Monday, 9 January 2006 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Is there a thread for the new Tortoise and Bonnie Prince Billy album? Which has leaked, apparently.

Excelsior Syndrum (noodle vague), Monday, 9 January 2006 19:43 (twenty years ago)

Madison Area (1998 Thrill Jockey tour single)

its on there.

pher (pher), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 13:02 (twenty years ago)

madison ave is a different version of madison area... (2 different takes of the same song)

6335, Tuesday, 10 January 2006 19:49 (twenty years ago)

b-side

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 19:58 (twenty years ago)

"Madison Ave" always sounded good at both 33 1/3 and 45 RPM

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Yes!! I've had this experience, too, Mark!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 20:02 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I think I actually had the single before I bought TNT. Once I heard what the synths sounded like on the album I figured it was probably 45 RPM.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 20:37 (twenty years ago)

Also missing are the first two singles, "Lonesome Sound" and "Mosquito/Gooseneck". The accompanying DVD is of the most interest to me, as I have everything listed above. Some previously unreleased material would have been nice (besides the single bonus remix track from the RRC era), for us hardcore types. Possibly some live versions of some of the covers they have done, like maybe a Peel session recording of that Joyce cover they did on the TNT tour. Grazing in the Grass and Theme de Yoyo are some other covers that haven't seen the light of day, not mention their original composition Omnichord which they played live on the "It's All Around You" tour and the Lanois collaboration stint.

heatthis, Friday, 20 January 2006 00:45 (twenty years ago)

I missed this thread first time around. Any chance Jed or anyone else would re-up that Oval remix?

"Grazing in the Grass" was a hilarious beer-spitting surprise of a cover on the Millions Now Living tour. (That summer when Barristers was briefly in the old Antenna Club building across from the Pig on Madison.) And "Goriri," & for that matter the whole Macro Dub Infection comp, pretty much prompted me to drop comics for 10+ years and spend all my money on records. I'll be interested in getting this box.

truck-patch pixel farmer (my crop froze in the field) (Rock Hardy), Friday, 20 January 2006 01:54 (twenty years ago)

I guess the Oval remixes, the Djed remixes and so on are missing because "Tortoise Remixed" (which collected all those 12"s from "Millions Now Living..." was reissued reasonably recently. It's got the gorgeous Spring Heel Jack "Galapagos (Version One)" as well, and the Vibert and O'Rourke mixes - yummy.
According to the Thrill Jockey site it seems not to be in print again, but maybe they'll put it back in print as well?

I'm very excited by this box too.

Peter Hollo (raven), Friday, 20 January 2006 14:48 (twenty years ago)

best side of those Millions 12"s was the Bundy one .. so great

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 20 January 2006 16:10 (twenty years ago)

six months pass...
"Madison Ave" always sounded good at both 33 1/3 and 45 RPM
-- Mark (r-...), January 10th, 2006.

but what speed was it actually recorded at? it's a 7" with a 33rpm hole in the center!

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 31 July 2006 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

okay, this other side is totally 45rpm, so i guess that's it

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 31 July 2006 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

what happened to this?

jed_ (jed), Monday, 31 July 2006 00:51 (nineteen years ago)

Fuck remixing a Tortoise.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 31 July 2006 00:55 (nineteen years ago)

it comes out in august i think

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 31 July 2006 00:55 (nineteen years ago)

and there are some awesome remixes, especially of djed and galapagos

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 31 July 2006 00:56 (nineteen years ago)

pre-orders start aug 1
official release aug 22

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 31 July 2006 00:56 (nineteen years ago)

this is like the awesome album they never made

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 31 July 2006 00:57 (nineteen years ago)

unlike the not-awesome albums they did make.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 31 July 2006 00:59 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, what is it with Tortoise? I have both TNT and Standards and the only track I really like (or remember) is Seneca (maybe Speakeasy too). That said, McEntire's remix of Theme From Retro (Blur) is rather splendid. How should I approach listening to them?

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Monday, 31 July 2006 01:02 (nineteen years ago)

i was talkin about the last couple being not awesome. TNT is totally awesome & standards is pretty good.

How should I approach listening to them?

i dunno - maybe you just don't like them? hardly any of TNT or standards strikes me as memorable much as i like them.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 31 July 2006 01:06 (nineteen years ago)

i really like millions now living will never die and TNT. standards was okay at points but also kind of lame. their first album is only good on drugs. i totally understand people who hate them though, sometimes i do too.

so louis, listen to the first track (djed) off millions now living will never die

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 31 July 2006 01:10 (nineteen years ago)

i find TNT very memorable but i think that has a lot to do with context

super hazy miami summers driving back and forth across the everglades

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 31 July 2006 01:10 (nineteen years ago)

i love their riffs when they find the balls to show them

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 31 July 2006 01:11 (nineteen years ago)

Tortoise are one of those bands I can't dislike, because, (and this applies to shit like Miles Davis and most classical) I feel almost unworthy of the music; it's clearly extremely complicated, fine-tuned, thoughtfully-composed stuff which my brain isn't quite mature enough to comprehend. I think I'll persevere with them until something clicks...

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Monday, 31 July 2006 01:11 (nineteen years ago)

but if you want something related that you will almost certainly like you should check 'directions in music' by bundy k. brown and two other guys whose names i forget.

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 31 July 2006 01:12 (nineteen years ago)

i do find "millions..." memorable.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 31 July 2006 01:13 (nineteen years ago)

Just found it on Amazon, looks quite juicy! Apparently the drumming is pretty incredible, amongst other things.

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Monday, 31 July 2006 01:16 (nineteen years ago)

I find TNT extremely memorable.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 31 July 2006 01:30 (nineteen years ago)

I'm looking forward to this. I've been listening to Tortoise a lot lately. I think Standards might be my ideal album in terms of production, and TNT is great too!

I was also very surprised at home much I liked The Brave and The Bold. They make a good rock band!

Matt Olken (Moodles), Monday, 31 July 2006 03:52 (nineteen years ago)

this box set is super duper.

david allen grier (dubplatestyle), Monday, 31 July 2006 04:26 (nineteen years ago)

Mmm... It's pretty decently priced on amazon. I gotta few other things I've been meaning to buy.

I stand by Millions. Especially Djed.

from The ends of your fingers (prosper.strummer.), Monday, 31 July 2006 11:52 (nineteen years ago)

is it sad that I saw this thread title and wondered to myself "all right, what is BOX supposed to stand for in ILM talk"?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 31 July 2006 12:01 (nineteen years ago)

BOX = buy only ten.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Monday, 31 July 2006 12:06 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe this is an excuse for me to "discover" Tortoise. I ignored 'em at the time but only on the basis of hearing a couple tracks that didn't grab me.

Edward III (edward iii), Monday, 31 July 2006 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

Yes it is.

from The ends of your fingers (prosper.strummer.), Monday, 31 July 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

For some reason I don't have TNT and have barely heard it though.

so in the liner notes for this there are several typically awesome brian eno quotes. does anyone know what they are from?

breakfast pants (disco stu), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 03:20 (nineteen years ago)

Some essay called "Unfinished" according to the notes.

This is great btw. I've only listened to discs one and three actually, but they have renewed my appreciation for Tortoise and made me want to pull out a bunch of other records I haven't listened to in ages. And it was only $20 which is just insane.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

thanks, alex. that's what i get for reading liner notes while eating dinner. i agree that the comp is great.

just checked eno's a year with swollen apendices and "unfinished" is indeed the title of the essay.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Thursday, 24 August 2006 02:16 (nineteen years ago)
