The Tortoise & Bonnie 'Prince' Billy album is excruciating, especially the Bruce Springsteen cover. What else is coming out this year that must be avoided at all costs?

Hatch (Hatch), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 17:41 (twenty years ago)

No, you're excruciating.

this doesn't count but i heard the Fiona Apple record for the first time this year, and I can't stand it. i have no idea why people adore it

Seriously, that synth line in the "Thunder Road" cover is great!

Two Gallants - What the Toll Tells (by-the-numbers Americana)
The Strokes - First Impressions of Earth (half good/half crap)

You guys really enjoy that version of "Thunder Road"? Man, I feel like they suck every ounce of everything good out of that song. Hearing it bums me out to no end. And the guitar playing is so wanky...

Hatch (Hatch), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Agree that Bonnie "Prince"/Tortoise album is pretty bad. That came out this year?

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Curious -- what don't you like about that Liars album?

I pretty much agree with everything in that blog post, I just think "Thunder Road" suffers massively from a mature, restrained reading. Born to Run-era Springsteen isn't so far away from Meat Loaf and so what? That's what great about it.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 20:03 (twenty years ago)

thx for the link, i'm listening to it right now...i'm digging it so far...

The Two Gallants single from a couple of months back was great but the album is way too long and meanders somewhat. There are some good bits, mind. Worst thing so far this year is the new album by that Irish band Turn, which should be called 'Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Play Us On The O.C.'

Nellie Mckay's "Pretty Little Head". At least in its current form.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 23:15 (twenty years ago)

hatch doesn't like music that came out after 1976.

michael crumsho (clikatowi), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 23:26 (twenty years ago)

I really hate everything I've heard off the Fiona Apple record too but haven't heard the whole thing.

xxxpost
Mark-- I honestly can't recall specifics, and I'm at the office so I'm momentarily unable pull the record up so to re-pinpoint my disdain. But I do know I made conscious effort to enjoy the leak. I'm all for a drum focus, so I wanted to. I know there was some overall weak element that I just could not take to. And I recall the last track sounding like some sort of awful Radiohead-Spaceman 3 hybrid.
I remember thinking, "this shit has been done before, only, shit was done well."

mox twelve (Mox twleve), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 16:17 (twenty years ago)

Not fair, Crumsho. I also like some things that came out in 1977.

Hatch (Hatch), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 16:20 (twenty years ago)

fair enough. i haven't heard this record, but the track selection alone makes me want to go all stabby stabby.
