Singer Blunt heads Brit shortlist

Singer James Blunt and rock group the Kaiser Chiefs are heading the shortlist for the Brit Awards, both picking up five nominations.

Blunt, who shot to fame in 2005 with his chart-topper You're Beautiful, is nominated for best male and best album.

Coldplay have landed nods in four categories, including the best group, album and single.

Pop veteran Madonna has picked up three nominations, along with Canadian indie band Arcade Fire.

Animated band Gorillaz, which features Blur frontman Damon Albarn, have been shortlisted in the best British album and group categories.

Best British female

Singer-songwriter Kate Bush, who recently returned with her first album for 12 years, has been rewarded with nominations for best British female and her two-disc comeback record Aerial.

She will do battle alongside the much younger Charlotte Church, Katie Melua, KT Tunstall and Natasha Bedingfield in the best British female category.

Robbie Williams could walk away with an unprecedented 15th Brit Award after being nominated for best British male.

New York-based but British-born Anthony and the Johnsons also lands a nod, along with Will Young and Ian Brown.

U2 have bagged two nominations in the international categories, while recently-emerged British rock act Hard-Fi have also earned a pair of nominations.

And Paul Weller gets a lifetime achievement award

Almost definitely.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 09:43 (twenty years ago)

I don't know, I kind of think Best Pop Act - James Blunt vs Katie Melua vs Kelly Clarkson vs Madonna vs Westlife is a bit of a nadir.

Is this the first year Kate's been nominated and actually had a record out?

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 09:45 (twenty years ago)

Hopefully a Kate live performance will give the Brits some point this year for the first time ever.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 10:52 (twenty years ago)

Kate'll get best female.

She always gets nominated when she has a record out. One year, it was the 'rocket man' single.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 10:57 (twenty years ago)

It would of course be churlish to bother pointing out the criminal ignorance of Sugababes, Girls Aloud, Rachel Stevens and even Goldfrapp (thought they'd bag a couple of noms) here.

Weren't the U2 and Green Day albums nominated last year for fucks sake?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 11:30 (twenty years ago)

It would of course be churlish to bother pointing out the criminal ignorance of Sugababes, Girls Aloud, Rachel Stevens and even Goldfrapp (thought they'd bag a couple of noms) here.

on any other board, no. but here, yes.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 11:32 (twenty years ago)

Didn't they change the rules because she used to win best female when she didn't have anything out?

Weller is nominated for Best Solo Male so wouldn't it look a bit daft if he didn't win that when he gets the lifetime contribution award?

I saw yesterday he said he would never ever reform the jam unless he was destitute.
So there goes any chance of The Jam playing the brits.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 11:32 (twenty years ago)

Weren't the U2 and Green Day albums nominated last year for fucks sake?

When has that ever meant anything?

Seriously though, they changed the dates allowable for release two years on the trot to allow Dido to win the award - presumably they have done the same again.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 11:33 (twenty years ago)

i can't remember any Natasha Bedingfield singles from the last 12 months either come to think of it.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 11:36 (twenty years ago)

Unmnown member of "hard-fi" on the radio this am (roughly transcribed) - "J34H!!1 W3R3 T3H B1G B0YZ N0\/\/!!!! \/\/3r3 UP HTERE W1+H COLPLAY ADN (wtf whoever else is "big")" was good for a few laffs at least.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 11:39 (twenty years ago)

It was "Coldplay, Franz Ferdinand and Oasis".

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 11:41 (twenty years ago)

Your memory is better than mine! Hubris will hopefully be clobbered by nemesis in this case.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 11:42 (twenty years ago)

Best example of "damned by faint praise" I'd heard in ages, which is why I remembered it.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 11:48 (twenty years ago)

What the fuck is up with the Best Rock Act as voted for by viewers of Kerrang TV? Can't imagine metal and emo kids voting for any of the acts listed. As rubbish as they are, surely Funeral For A Friend, My Chemical Romance et al have sold enough to be on the British music industry's radar.

stew!, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 13:14 (twenty years ago)

I find it hard to believe Oasis have ever been on Kerrang TV.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 13:17 (twenty years ago)

I have this horrible feeling that Stevem's list upthread is near as dammit OTM.

Depressing, isn't it?

Kasabian also appear to have been nominated for an album released in 2004. What is wrong with these people? OTOH it's quite funny as it keeps Razorlight from getting nominated.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 13:58 (twenty years ago)

why in the name of fuck is DARE or DIRTY HARRY not nominated for the single?? what the..

piscesboy, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 14:10 (twenty years ago)

there is no doubt about it - 2005 was dud of a year for the british mainstream

britplop - crap muzak for virgin radio listeners and Q readers

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 14:10 (twenty years ago)

how the fuck are antony AND THE JOHNSONS a solo act?

man David Gray must be PISSED.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Firstly has Dizzee actually released anything in the last year? If not why the nomination?

Secondly, where the fuck are Girls Aloud in best pop act?

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 20:38 (twenty years ago)

has the dance category been removed? Didn't Basement Jaxx win last year?

danzig (danzig), Thursday, 12 January 2006 06:25 (twenty years ago)

Girls Aloud,Sugababes,McFly exclusion is explained here

But the best British single shortlist is based on airplay and sales - which means X Factor winner Shayne Ward is nominated but Gorillaz are not.

No it doesn't.

Gorillaz got blummin tons of airplay, all year! And it sold quite well, right?

Shayne sold, granted. But has it had tons of airplay? A bit, I would say. But I'd still lay odds that "Feel Good Inc" got more airplay than "Wahay I've Won!"

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 12 January 2006 11:19 (twenty years ago)

And the nominees for best pop act are "based on sales of albums and singles over a calendar year".

Under these rules, Kelly Clarkson and Katie Melua - who have had strong album sales but no massive hit singles - are in the running.

But McFly (two number one singles in 2005), Sugababes (one chart-topper) and Girls Aloud (four top 10 hits) are not.

Did those albums not sell well then?

"The androgynous frontman predicted the reaction - half of the public would think he was not British, he joked, and the other half would think he was not male."

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 12 January 2006 11:28 (twenty years ago)

There has also been reported disquiet about the best British live act category.

Past controversy

Media stories have said Live 8 acts - such as show-stealers Pink Floyd and Robbie Williams - have been excluded because it was a free event.

The opinion of the poster should not be considered an opinion of the worthiness of the recipient, more just a pick from a bad list in most cases. Thank you and good evening.
