uk garage in london

i finally managed to go to a uk garage night! forward, at the velvet rooms last night. it was really good fun, except that being a sunday it was all over at midnight. so, are there any other uk garage nights in london that don't have no trainers/jeans policies?

the thing that really stuck out for me was just how crucial the mc-ing was to the music; at most jungle nights i've been to the mcs have been pretty irrelevant, but here the abcking tracks were all much of a muchness and the excitement came entirely from the toasting. oh, and ms dynamite is by far the best mc i've ever seen ever ever ever.

haha I'm continually disappointed that all the london/uk ilxors aren't continually banging on about listening to the pirate radio & going out to raves/clubs/etc & going mental.

they're spoiled rotten

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 16 June 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

missed eskimo dance at area in watford. itso nly 10 mins down the road too.
ios theres another one then im up for it.

'trainers/jeans' policy is the problem.
the last garage night i went to was in russia (?!)

I'm sure I'll get shot down for this, but my garage clubbing experiences have consisted of thinly veiled threats of violence and a lot of shoving so the radio works out better for me...

No problem with dressing up for them - that's the best bit.

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

wahey ambrose, i've never been to The Area, tho perhaps thats a good thing. any club that states 'no trainers/jeans' is dud by default. by having to order a dress code its obviously a place that attracts trouble regardless of what people wear.

i doubt i'd enjoy a garage night myself - the MCs would surely piss me off like they used to at drum n' bass nights. i would like to hear the Rolldeep sound here and there at any night i'd go to tho, just thrown in with other genres.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Rolldeep and Dizzee will be on at Fabric soon - you should all come, it'll sound fab... I'll be wearing Gucci and duffing people up... duh!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno, will it sound BETTER live in that environment? i'm not sure

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The soundsytem there is killer so it will sound better than at most places, plus it's a good club and there'll be no trouble I wouldn't have thought... then again, I've never encountered any anywhere else...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

would be worth hearing the bass maybe...no chance of deciphering vocals tho - not that that really bothers me, but something does. i'm trying to figure out why i have no real desire to see this live, even tho i heard another Dizzee album track on Friday night (sampling power rock!) and it was superb.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ah that track would be Jus' A Rascal... it's killer... and you really SHOULD check him live - it won't be a live album performance though from what i can gather... just their club thing. however, this is vital to really understanding the album... it's all about context

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-b-but fabric????

its not a fun club really?

gareth (gareth), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

ikt sounds good... and where in london is better for that size?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

meant to say:

it sounds good... and where in london is better for that size?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i not sure, theres just something cold about fabric

gareth (gareth), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

fabric is not sdo good. the sound system is good but its just so expensive. and something about having a box office for a club. it feels like going to the cinema. just a cinema with loads of dicks from the home counties (ie everyone in my hometown) hanging around ,on their big night out in london - basically it has replaced equinox in leicester sq. as the place to go in london. (this is no joke) -"it even stays open past 3!"

but it will be worth it for dizzee. but despite often booking some really good acts ( isee pantytec are playing soon), its just too big, which means it costs 15 quid in, just because ram recordds or someone are filling up the back room. and the aphex experience i had with gareth a long time has put my off.

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i suppose i'm alright with it as i never pay to get in there - it'd be different if i was shelling out loads to go to a night... but for a big club, it does the job... it's not the best venue in the world but for its size it does ok and it books great artists... gimme plastic people anyday tho - it's my fave club in the world... perfect size unflashy and a superd soundsystem...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

My boyfriend was there, the Fabric, on the opening night. He said the interior was great but the place was packed (duh!) that evening.

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

farben playing at plastic people, mouse on mars at the end...
its like someones taken the 'coming soon' list, and their obvious respctive venues and then shaken it around so that peoiple are just paying at weird ass clubs...
ps i am up for the aforementioned 2 gigs, as well as dizzee. so who else? G?

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm deffo up for farben and dizzee... fancy a beer when we get there?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Rolldeep and Dizzee will be on at Fabric soon

when???

toby (tsg20), Monday, 16 June 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't it Thursday or Friday week? I don't know how I know this.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 16 June 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i really hope not, cos that'd clash with glastonbury...

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

eskimo dance 2: tuesday. area again

Chip Morningstar (bob), Monday, 30 June 2003 07:16 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone up for it?

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 30 June 2003 08:27 (twenty-two years ago)

tuesday? is it a weekly thing?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 30 June 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe monthly.

cant imagine what its like at area tho.

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 30 June 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

never been so its tempting

afterwards we can go for a Watford kebab, chuckle

stevem (blueski), Monday, 30 June 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

so did Dizzee play at Fabric while me, toby n co were getting grimey in the rural sense of the word?

martin (martin), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

they cancelled apparently, so we can't even say we did that while you were fixin up lookin sharp in the Healing Field

stevem (blueski), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)
