Heltah Skeltah: "Nocturnal" - the best rap record of mid-nineties?

The more I listen to this the more I'm convinced it's, alongside Niggamortis, the best album of it's era (that I've heard), better than Illmatic or Liquid Swords. It's kinda heard to explain... There isn't any single standout track, but the whole album just sounds solidly great from beginning to end. I love the weeded-out, dubby beats, the laidback and slightly bemused attitude of Ruck and Rock, plus the record contains several of my all-time favourite one-liners ("someone tell the fat lady she's up in five minutes", "fuck the world, stick my dick in the dirt", etc).

What's your opinion?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 11:05 (twenty years ago)

My favourite track is probably "Therapy", where they play the roles of a therapist and a patient...

I think that, we should start with the session. ("Uh-huh.")
But before we begin let me ask you a few questions. ("Uh-huh.")
Have you been touched the wrong way? ("Nah.")
Involved in gun play? ("Yeah.")
The town, let me guess, acquited like you was O.J.? ("How you know?")
Typical black life, you jackknifes under a sea biscuit,
Get specific an' stop fuckin around wit that crack rock. ("Yo, I don't smoke doze!")
Yes you do Duke, I can tell,
Cuz you actin' funny, like when blacks get money.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 11:16 (twenty years ago)

no...it's personal

rizzx, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 11:22 (twenty years ago)

It's good but it isn't even the best BCC album of the mid nineties ("enta da stage", "dah shinin'" and the Black Moon b sides/remixes album are all better, obviously) nevermind "the best rap record of the mid-nineties, dewd"

ELLI$ MARVELL, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 13:00 (twenty years ago)

what he said

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Dah Shinin' is great.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 17:57 (twenty years ago)

although, "Leflah Leflour Eshkoshka" is the greatest rap single of the 90s

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:01 (twenty years ago)

sean price (ruck) is fucking awesome

but i must say, 'soul on ice' by ras kass is probably my favorite mid-nineties rap record

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:04 (twenty years ago)

although, "Leflah Leflour Eshkoshka" is the greatest rap single of the 90s

!! This is one of my favorite tracks ever!!

I think Alex loves it too.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:06 (twenty years ago)

The new Sean Price album is really good too. Some of the most real lyrics I've heard in a while. Seriously, it's really strong:

It go, Frederick Douglas, Nat Turner
Ku Klux Klan, big black burner
Ashtray, cigarette butts
Box cutter gem star, watch this nigga get cut
Ten dollars, two tokens
Friends hollerin', "Yo, what you smoking?"
I reply with, "none of ya biz"
It's father's day and I ain't get shit from none of my kids
Listen, liquor store, let me get a fifth
Weed spots, let me get a spliff
Mad as hell, plus I'm frustrated
Last album came out, you motherfucks hate it
Rock solo, Ruck broke
Here's a hundred dollars, what a fucking joke
Eviction notice, yo, I gotta go
Album been out two months, ain't did a fucking show
Ruckus, you ruined, I put the barrel to my dome
But what the fuck are you doing? Chill
Found a new way to build
Fuck rap, started selling 2-ways and pills
When the stomach growls, and the fridge there
And you starving, and ya kid's there
It's.... motherfuckin' critical pa
My pursuit of this rap, knew this straight trivial, pa
Niggaz all pray loyal, til yet, they all jet
When they fuckin' with a four dollar royalty check
And if you feel me, act like you know
Sincerly yours, the brokest rapper you know, Sean P

one year passes...

I was in Berlin last week, and saw an ad for a Heltah Skeltah gig that was there a week before. Damn, if I'd knewn this I'd gone there earlier! Does anyone know if they're officially back together, or if this is just some one-off thing?

I guess should check those Sean P albums, though I always thought Rock was the better of the two.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 10:11 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, they played last month in Brooklyn, so it seems that they're back. Which is weird, given that Sean P is apparently fielding offers (or maybe one offer) from majors.

I've been listening to O.G.C's M-Pire Strikes back a lot lately. Starang Wondah just has this terrific cadence.

paulhw, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

i love bcc shit & sean p but i could never really get into this album

and what, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

i just found this old double vinyl promo copy of "Da Storm" by orginoo gun clapaz i should listen to it tomorrow.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

(xpost) Really? I'm not sure it's better than any other BCC albums from that period though and certainly not the best rap record of mid-90s, but it's still pretty good. Strangely I've never heard a Sean Price record though.

I really like that OGC album too.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, they played last month in Brooklyn, so it seems that they're back. Which is weird, given that Sean P is apparently fielding offers (or maybe one offer) from majors.

Maybe Sean P cares about other things besides money? Especially on the first album (though Major Force is underrated too) they were one of the best rap duos ever, so it'd be great to have them back.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 10:56 (eighteen years ago)

are any of the full group BCC albums any good?

According to this Sean Price interview Heltah Skeltah are back in studio working on a new album! Man, I can't wait.

Tuomas, Sunday, 23 September 2007 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

Someone's put a bunch of Heltah Skeltah video online, man, some of these are pretty freaky!

Operation Lockwdown
Indian face paint and the whole BCC posse doing wardance?! The ending is nice.

Therapy
Sean P looks like the best therapist ever!

I Ain't Havin' That
Gotta love that one guy in the video who's only job is to do the "I ain't havin' that" part.

Operation Lockdown (Original Version)
This one's very disorienting, heavy weeded vibes.

Tuomas, Monday, 24 September 2007 00:12 (eighteen years ago)

the single version of therapy isn't as good as the album version unfortunately, but the video is fantastic still

ciderpress, Monday, 24 September 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, the beat is definitely weaker than on the album version.

i never really investigated these guys properly. lost interest in BCC when beatminerz stopped producing them, or when mr walt and evil dee changed their sound.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

dude you should check the sean p records and this one sounds great from what i've heard

ie: BANGING (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 18:17 (seventeen years ago)

no beatminerz on this shit - new one's got a couple miami vice synth beats that are dope imo and the rest is all classic walt & dee style production

and what, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 18:17 (seventeen years ago)

sean p records are probly the only reason to listen to rap in the 00s if im honest

and what, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 18:18 (seventeen years ago)

couple years back i saw BCC live on stage and they brought out the outlawz to do some joints off that lost pac/buckshot album... anyway sean is the most charismatic mc on the planet and you should basically give him all your money

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 18:20 (seventeen years ago)

production probly doesnt stand out if you're some uk grime faggot but spitting about gunz over minor key piano beats is what bcc is about and gtfo if u expect more

and what, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 18:22 (seventeen years ago)

i mastered the art of war before a nigga read sun tzu

ie: BANGING (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 18:24 (seventeen years ago)

well, everyone would sound better over wiley and davinche beats from 2004.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 18:24 (seventeen years ago)

i bought a wiley album and i liked it pretty much, at least the beats...i have problem with english accents and rapping sometimes though, but at least half was pretty dope IMO
