Title: Keep My Skillet Good & Greasy-Complete R
Artist: Uncle Dave Macon

If Jimmie Rodgers was the Father of Country Music, Uncle Dave Macon was its Grandfather, one of the first country stars to record and the first star of the Grand Ole Opry. Now, Bear Family has prepared the ultimate tribute to one of the great characters not just of counry music, but of all popular music: a 9-CD-plus-DVD set that includes ALL of Uncle Dave’s commercial recordings! Macon was responsible for bringing all manner of folk song, vaudeville song, blues, gospel and comedy into the 20th century, so this 248-track set is something of a musical education as well as a comprehensive look at the Dixie Dewdrop; among the tunes are such classics as 'I’ll Tickle Nancy; Bile Them Cabbage Down; Give Me Back My Money; Country Ham and Red Gravy; Over the Mountain; One More River to Cross; Governor Al Smith; Death of John Henry (Steel Driving Man); Shall We Gather at the River', and more. There’s also a series of newly discovered Opry air checks from 1939 to 1940 to savor, PLUS a DVD of the 1940 film 'Grand Ole Opry' starring Macon (nobody ever played banjo like this guy…a must-see)! A deluxe book containing a newly researched biography, a revised discography, complete song lyrics and rare photos completes one essential set of American music!

Title: Atomic Platters Cold War Music (5cd/dvd
Artist: Atomic Platters Cold War Music (5cd/dvd

To commemorate the 60th anniversary of Hiroshima, Bear Family has put together its own “Manhattan Project”: a set that examines the crater the dawning of the Atomic Age left on the face of American pop culture. Inside are more than two dozen disquieting civil defense Public Defense announcements (including the complete “scare” LPs 'If the Bomb Falls' and 'Complacent Americans') voiced by such celebrities as Groucho Marx, Bob Hope, Pat Boone and Johnny Cash and over 100 songs about the Bomb and the Red Scare featuring big names like Bill Haley & His Comets, Marty Robbins, Wanda Jackson and the Louvin Brothers as well as bizarre obscurities like the Goldwaters, Janet Greene (the right wing’s answer to Joan Baez) and Dr. Strangelove and the Fallouts. Check out some of these song titles: 'I Dreamt I Saw Krushchev (in a Pink Cadillac); Fallout Shelter; Fifty Megatons; Civil Defense March (Heads Up America); Let’s Keep the Communists Out', and more, all covered inside a 200-page book that brings back the Cold War with pictures and text. And the DVD alone is flat-out hilarious (and frightening), as it compiles nine civil defense and anti-Communist films (including the legendary 'Duck and Cover') from the ’50s and ’60s. Another timely history lesson from our “old” European friends at Bear Family.

thanks again. and, really, that's it.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 14:40 (twenty years ago)

Uncle Dave is a hot-shit banjo player, and he has many entertaining songs. A few of those tracks are on the Harry Smith anthology (and on the Vol. 4 on Revenant). I also have the one-disc Uncle Dave set, Go Long Mule - which is pretty good and a much more affordable introduction to the man, both unaccompanied and with his rollicking string-band ensemble, the Fruit Jar Drinkers. Travelin' Down the Road would probably be worth picking up too.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Why don't you want the complete set, instead?

Jim M (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 14:57 (twenty years ago)

Dave Macon fucking rocks! Track 34 on that massive set, Way On Down the Old Plank Road, is one of the best things on the Harry Smith anthology.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Why don't you want the complete set, instead?

I just have a feeling I'd never listen to it - too exhausting. I'd rather have someone else do the work of selecting some good tracks and sequencing them nicely and fitting them on a single disc.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Wish that Cold War set were cheaper. Some of its here, including the Right-Wing Joan Baez and the Goldwaters, etc.

Fascinating stuff.

erklie, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 15:44 (twenty years ago)

It's a shame they missed "Russians" off the Cold War box. They could have put the video with the gymnast / dancer on the DVD.

I like the idea of the Dave Macon box but in practice I know I'd never digest it all, and would end up with five fave songs which I played to the exclusion of the others. Stupid attention span.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 15:52 (twenty years ago)

two things i love about uncle dave: how hard he rocks -- some of that stuff is practically punk; and also that he was like in his 50s when he made those records, which means what you're really hearing is a late 19th-century guy. (which, on the downside, means you do have to tolerate the casual racism.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 15:55 (twenty years ago)

no, it's true, 9 discs of dave macon is a LOT. i just wanna hear what those songs sound like! like "carve that possum" and "all go hungry hash house" and a zillion others. (i do have that revenant vol 4 s

and the cold war set, man, i don't think i've heard more than 2 or 3 songs off that thing!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 16:05 (twenty years ago)

dude, buy this instead and save a few 100 bucks.
