I don't have to listen to it to know it rocks.
Okay, maybe I do. But I'd be shocked if it doesn't.

The new record is the most "accessible" thing they've done so far, and hasn't grabbed me emotionally on first listen like all of their other records did. On the other hand, for some reason it keeps reminding me of "Exile on Main Street," or maybe "Let It Bleed," in its cohesive not-very-cohesiveness. I need to give it some time to sink in before I feel confident really assessing it.

How are the Isbell songs? How many does he have?

In a recent interview Hood said Isbell and Cooley contributed two songs each to the new album. The other seven are Hood's.

Yeah, that's right. "Easy On Yourself" and "Daylight" are Isbell's. "Gravity's Gone" and "Space City" are Cooley. The rest are Hood's. His "Aftermath USA" and the title track are two of my favorites on the disc, as is "Little Bonnie," a spooky, sad song about Hood's cousin who died before he was born. It's like a ghost story with no ghost.

It's starting to come together for me now, and it's quickly growing on me. There's more ... space in the music. Leaner and meaner (though to my mind a tad more ellusive/mysterious and less cathartic).

I'm kinda bummed that Isbell's You Try Don't You isn't gonna get the full DBT treatment. I guess it'll be on the solo record, along with Whisper, another classic ballad in the vein of Goddamn Lonely Love.

And covering Like a Rolling Stone?!

Neither of these Isbell songs are especially ballad like, btw. "Easy On Yourself" actually sounds very Hood, and is probably the most aggressive song on the album. And he sings the hell out of "Daylight."
