This all comes up because I dug up the reissue of Green Eggs and Crack today and the opening song "Innocents Ablaze" just has such a nice 'oh right, that was college/alternative rock and it works here' feeling to it. Actually much of the album is like that, a bit tentative and less brash but maybe all the better for it in the end.

He's a cool guy, and he's doing good things with their content department.

later stuff: eh.
in my working life, i've worked either directly with or literally down the hall from three of the four or them. which may well be true of anyone who's had a dayjob in media or music in the past decade.

some great songs. Never had the chance to see them, but I still get a great kick out of the couple of songs I have someplace. Saw Green Eggs and Crack on sale the other day and did not grab it. Will correct that very soon, yes. How were there later records? "Finally"?

Listening to the first three albums for the first time in forever, and - though my memories are fond - I don't think they've aged particularly well. There is at least one great album's worth of stuff in those first three, but the dross is pretty terrible. Loved them live - as Ned said, "loud, good vibe, band having a great time and everyone singing along." Plus, they really knew what their good songs were, which you can't say about everyone.
Never heard anything after Cereal Killers (though I did see them again on the Mutiny tour); looks like the actually put out a live album. Anyone heard it?

When I was younger I wrote the band a letter complaining that they never played all ages shows in Philly, and they wrote me a nice letter back.

Son of Sam I Am doesn't even have a wikipedia page and it is a goddamn outrage.
One of my favorite bands, but I had somehow forgot to listen to them at all for the past 5 years or so. Blasted through Son of Sam I Am, Cereal Killers, and Mutiny last night and felt some emotions I haven't felt in a long while.

Omg lol, I listen to Crush Story once every few years and wow does it take me back. That’s the only TMJ song I really liked.
― weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 29 August 2019 16:10 (six years ago)
Seasons in the Sun, Drum Machine, and Take a Lot of Drugs are the TMJ songs I enjoy. I think I would like more if I could tolerate screeching guitar.
― brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 29 August 2019 16:26 (six years ago)
Do TMJ fans not like ...finally? Probably one of my top twenty or so fave albums ever; in high school the cassette that was most frequently in my Walkman was a C90 with it in one side and the US version of the first Clash album on the other.
SoSIA is prob my second fave TMJ record, but at that point it’s splitting hairs. That whole four album run is wonderful.
― Herman Woke (cryptosicko), Thursday, 29 August 2019 16:51 (six years ago)
I haven't listened to ...finally? since it came out, but in my teenage mind it was such a let-down from Mutiny that I only spun it a few times. I'll have to check it out again tonight.
xp: The guitar tones on Son of Sam I Am give you the full "can of wasps in your ear" experience, it's true. Jay's tones get better on the next couple albums. Kicking (That Gone Fishing Song) and Clowns remain two of my favorite songs regardless.

I only just learned thanks to the youtube comments section that Clowns was on the soundtrack to the Bobcat Goldthwait movie Shakes the Clown. It was their only soundtrack credit.

I haven't listened to this band in eons, and I'm sort of afraid to, given how much I used to like them.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 29 August 2019 17:06 (six years ago)
They’re super adolescent and goofy iirc. I do sometimes think about the line “I am the smallest giant ever” though because it so perfectly encapsulates how I felt as an adolescent with a monster crush.

that's weird, cuz it's not in the movie

Weird! I've never seen the movie - is it good? I don't honestly know much about Goldthwait. Here's the imdb page:

Gotten to know Tim Quirk casually over the years -- he was a regular presented at the Pop Conference, and lives in the Bay Area. Last saw him at an Algiers show.
