Dr J Bowman (Dr J Bowman), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 21:18 (twenty years ago)

I always thought bollocks meant "shit," but now I'm thinking it means "balls." Am I right?

Stop playing with your junk, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 21:33 (twenty years ago)

it means behind.

Stephen C (ihope), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 21:37 (twenty years ago)

"Disc jockeys" are so named after Jockey brand underwear and jock straps.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 21:41 (twenty years ago)

It's easy to laugh now if you're too young to remember the big Boogie Down Productions Knackers Falling Off disaster of '88.

Excelsior Syndrum (noodle vague), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 22:28 (twenty years ago)

Because when they hold each others bollocks, it makes the audience uncomfortable.

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 22:31 (twenty years ago)

Kiss my black ass.

Dan (The Correct Answer) Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 22:33 (twenty years ago)

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 12 January 2006 02:57 (twenty years ago)

I mean, yeah, I see that there's a strand of hair across it, but why is it pink above and brown below?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 12 January 2006 02:59 (twenty years ago)

you just bought yourself a free mention on the "ILX quotes taken out of context" thread

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 12 January 2006 03:00 (twenty years ago)

Back on topic.

LL Cool J: "There's a lot of people who aren't rappers who hold their [bollocks]"

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Thursday, 12 January 2006 03:17 (twenty years ago)

"There's a lot of people who aren't rappers who hold their bollocks" is not a relevant or satisfactory answer to "Why do rappers hold their bollocks?", though. "There's a lot of rappers who hold other parts of their body" wouldn't be either.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 12 January 2006 03:21 (twenty years ago)

it's to hold up their pants

Peter Densmore (pbnmyj), Thursday, 12 January 2006 05:45 (twenty years ago)

but why do their pants keep falling down, even when they wear belts with them?

whatever (boglogger), Thursday, 12 January 2006 10:26 (twenty years ago)

Because their belts are loose.

Another Q: Why are the kidz wearing their jeans that low, like they're virtually down? Alice was worried about James' at the Busted gig "They're going to fall down soon!" She enthused.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 12 January 2006 10:36 (twenty years ago)

so you can see they don't have skid marks in their underwear?

whatever (boglogger), Thursday, 12 January 2006 10:44 (twenty years ago)

or cos pulling their trousers up all the time means they don't have to keep holding their sandras

whatever (boglogger), Thursday, 12 January 2006 10:45 (twenty years ago)

well, didn't Michael Jackson start it all ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 12 January 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

well, he may have started the instantaneous crotch-grab, but I think the rapper crotch-hold is much different; one, because it holds their pants up, two, because it makes it easier to swagger and look a bit more disgruntled, three, because rapping is an unnerving activity; it helps to have a form/feeling of security near-by, and four, because any good rapper will weave raunchy innuendo into his flow so it's good to have a bypass from the crotch to the head just in case something like indigestion were to hamper the sharing of ideas.

Peter Densmore (pbnmyj), Friday, 13 January 2006 00:44 (twenty years ago)

They got that from the Italians, I think.

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Friday, 13 January 2006 01:37 (twenty years ago)

The function of the mirror system is a subject of much speculation. These neurons may be important for understanding the actions of other people, and for learning new skills by imitation. Some researchers also speculate that mirror systems may simulate observed actions, and thus contribute to our theory of mind skills, while others relate mirror neurons to language abilities. It has also been proposed that problems with the mirror system may underlie cognitive disorders, in particular autism. Research into all of these possiblities is ongoing.

◙◙, Friday, 13 January 2006 09:20 (twenty years ago)

Because they don't want us to see their vaginas....

SoulManJ, Friday, 13 January 2006 09:56 (twenty years ago)

well, maybe rockers would do it too if they didn't have their guitars, bass, drums etc. !
speaking of which, i remember a quote by lennon saying he would feel naked without his guitar on stage so maybe if hadn't have one, the beatles would have started the crotch holding thing...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 13 January 2006 10:07 (twenty years ago)

Maybe it's some sort of cultural manifestation of a castration complex:

The castration complex is closely associated with the Oedipus complex, according to Freud: "the reaction to the threats against the child aimed at putting a stop to his early sexual activities and attributed to his father" (Introductory Lectures 15.208) . The young child with primitive desires, in coming face to face with the laws and conventions of society (including the prohibitions against incest and murder), will tend to align prohibition with castration (something that is sometimes reinforced by parents if they warn against, for example, masturbation by saying that the child will in some way be punished bodily, eg. by going blind).
