Are there black guys out there with asymmetrical haircuts, trucker hats and grubby gang of four tshirts who sing with whiny voices in derivative indie bands?

Do you think the term 'wigger' is acceptable?

I think there really is something that the term 'wigger' describes, but yeah, given the word's derivation, perhaps it's best not used and I'm happy for anyone with moderator powers to change the title or delete the thread. I don't think the idea behind my thread was particularly offensive though, the target for my derision was more hipster culture if you look at my initial post.

JM Facheaux, Thursday, 12 January 2006 14:56 (twenty years ago)

i knew black "rednecks" in high school....they chewed tobacco, they listened to country music, they went deer hunting, they had southern drawls, they drove giant trucks and went "muddin'" etc. etc.

also: i hate the word wigger.

Two things:

1. Before PC, identity politics was about making minorities more visible. After PC, this identity politics was replaced by a vapid language-policing exercise which seemed to want to make minorities less visible. Hence all references to racial difference became "racist", all references to gender difference "sexist", all references to cultural difference between East and West "orientalist", and so on. Where's the revolution? Oh, we're keeping it under the carpet!

2. When I was married to a brown woman, she taught me that someone who's white on the inside and brown on the outside is called (by 2nd gen London brown kids, anyway) a "coconut".

Momus (Momus), Friday, 13 January 2006 07:02 (twenty years ago)

So the Strokes' "Ask Me Anything" is actually about not compromising yr East Asian roots? Because now I am waiting for the Cornershop remix.

"After PC, this identity politics was replaced by a vapid language-policing exercise which seemed to want to make minorities less visible. Hence all references to racial difference became "racist", all references to gender difference "sexist", "-Momus

Can you provide some examples supporting this thesis? Doesn't any discussion have to include references to those who on the far left initially used pc as a term to fight against racism as part of the "revolution", then those on the right who turned it into a pejorative so successfully that the term 'pc' is seen as a negative by everyone.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 13 January 2006 17:52 (twenty years ago)

What, is saying "brown woman" somehow more wrong than saying "black woman?"

Also, Momus is right about the PC thing. Isn't it a strangely "off" topic for white people to talk about degrees of "blackness," yet completely normal and acceptable for black people to talk about degrees of "blackness?" Also, acceptable for black folk to tell white folk how white they are. Makes no sense!

Momus Is Right, Friday, 13 January 2006 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:16 (twenty years ago)

Maybe it just seems acceptable because I've never seen anyone contest an accusation of being "so white." The general response is to just laughingly recoil as if to say, "Yeah, you got me there. I'm white alright."

Pashmina, Monday, 12 November 2007 10:22 (eighteen years ago)

You might want to explain what you mean a bit more carefully, Geir.

Obviously, indie is superior to hip-hop. This has to do with musical qualities rather than race. There are already lots of white indie fans, but there are still way too few black indie fans.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 12 November 2007 11:02 (eighteen years ago)

Go Geir! Go Geir!

Scik Mouthy, Monday, 12 November 2007 11:02 (eighteen years ago)

And all rock music is kind of "black" anyway. The very existance of the rhythm section in any rock band is a "black" element, so there is no such thing as "black" or "white" rock, only it is at its best when it borrows at least just as much from the European tradition in addition.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 12 November 2007 11:06 (eighteen years ago)

Underneath it, there's a kind of utopic egalitarianism; it's just couched in such casual wrongheadedness and pseudo-bigotry that it's difficult to parse.

Scik Mouthy, Monday, 12 November 2007 11:09 (eighteen years ago)

OTM. Also lol at the thought of all those, say, Scottish traditional military drummers being the "black" element of the music.

Umm, I meant Nick OTM, not Geir. That would just be silly.

Matt DC, Monday, 12 November 2007 11:11 (eighteen years ago)

Scottish military drumming sounds nothing like the kind of rhythm section you find in a rock band though. Rock is partly a black genre, but from the 60s onwards it has also added "white" elements. But only in addition, not instead of.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 12 November 2007 11:14 (eighteen years ago)

Has geir just dug himself out of this hole?

I say yes.
