New Lo-Fidelity Allstars album

The first album had it's moments ("Kool Roc Bass", "Battle flag"). They got rid of that annoying singer and they have a new album out now called "Don't be afraid of love". Anyone hear it?

Michael Bourke, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've heard the song with Jamie Lidell from Super_Collider. I don't know about the track beneath it, but Jamie's part is NICE.

So, no, I don't have anything to add to the thread, but Super_Collider were ace, weren't they?

Keiko, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's pretty good. track 6, "feel like i feel," is my fave song of the year so far--think "digital love" only super-mersh

M Matos, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah some of the tracks on the first one would've been shit-hot instrumentals and battleflag + all the tracks after it still bang for fuckin real.

ethan, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank god they've lost the singer. The group clearly benefits from its loyalty to song-structures - on "How To Operate..." their grooves feel more focused and yet more expansive than most other big beat, and they could do house, trip hop etc. quite convincingly too. However that twat's annoying vocals and drug- fucked "insights" (worse than Prml Scrm possibly) were all wrong. I'm quite interested in hearing the new album.

Tim, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm quite wary, the reviews remind me awfully of the sort of reviews Midfield Generals Generalisation album was getting, they prompted me to go and buy it, and it may not be big beat but it's not much else either. Having said that he puts on quite a good dj set. And runs a label which is about to get lots of cash from Rocky, Diesel, and Ashley Beadle.

Ronan, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

lo fi's in ibiza is ok. the greg dulli one is ok ('kill me, confuse me and fulfil me... your body's like a rope, gonna slip that knot around my throat, bang bang!')

the jason spiritualized fronting air ones are bad. rest of the album is average.

Wyndham Earl, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was a bit wary of this album because of the lukewarm critical reception it got, but bought it because they've been ace in the past and it made the "Still Hot" column in Mixmag - a magazine that says nothing to me about my life but is consistently spot on with its album reviews. I'm glad I did because it's great, they're still the kings of scuzzy funk but the guest vocalists mean they've now got more tricks up their sleeve than vocodored streams of consciousness.

Oh yes, can anyone else detect a hint of the KLF in the gloriously arrogant "Lo Fi's In Ibiza"? I'm not quite sure why this is, but suspect it's the self-referential soulful vocal coupled with some dodgy rapping.

Mike Ratford, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'feel like i feel' is most definitely a fine fine song!

stevie, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1998. HELL. ON. EARTH.

Can never be repeated enough times.

also 'kool roc bass' -- over ten years i've learned to tolerate blokey's voice i guess. obviously it'd be even better with someone else doing vocals, but these tracks are dece. james murphy is blatantly a fan.

banriquit, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 19:03 (seventeen years ago)

lol @ Carmody.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:30 (seventeen years ago)

obviously it'd be even better with someone else doing vocals

the list of bands in this category is pretty fucking enormous

blueski, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:33 (seventeen years ago)

Singer guy was obviously a non-instrument playing mate who looked the part (i.e. someone who has been in a pub for 3 days and had then found a coat on his way home)

Lazer Sheep Dip Funk is pretty great too, iirc.

Neil S, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:36 (seventeen years ago)

yeah that's one of the best things on it

blueski, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:38 (seventeen years ago)

Quitney have you been listening to this album regularly for the last 10 years or something?

Matt DC, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:40 (seventeen years ago)

where else was there to go after this zenith?

blueski, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:41 (seventeen years ago)

I think his lyrics quite often bring something to the party that they missed on the second album. http://www.stylusmagazine.com/feature.php?ID=1777

"Useless" singers are often, I imagine, pretty key driving forces in bands. Ian Brown, Danny McNamara, The Wrekked Train. They might have shite pipes but without them the bands may never get beyond the rehearsal room. For better or worse, clearly. Lo-Fidelity Allstars didn't manage much productivity after he left.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:42 (seventeen years ago)

shaun ryder never gets this criticism, he's seen as integral to the band's sound.

blueski, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:49 (seventeen years ago)

sumner too for that matter, who can sometimes be harder to listen to than a vocalist like wrekked train, gillespie or, ahem, pete voss

blueski, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:50 (seventeen years ago)

Sumner tries too hard, I think. The others mentioned here don't even bother trying.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:51 (seventeen years ago)

rescreened this album recently and i still love most of it. dude's lyrics are hilarious as often as they're terrible. the opening monologue is non-stop lulz.

jabba hands, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:51 (seventeen years ago)

Sumner tries too hard, I think. The others mentioned here don't even bother trying.

yeah and sometimes the latter really is preferable

blueski, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:53 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, without doubt.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:54 (seventeen years ago)

the opening monologue is non-stop lulz.

Agreed, it reminds me of that rofl-inducing Dave Clarke track with the "scary" vocals on it.

Neil S, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:58 (seventeen years ago)

love the monologue at the start of the amazing title track as well

blueski, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:01 (seventeen years ago)

lol i forgot dudes name was wrekked train

a lot of this album sounds like justice

Turns out he also got the second album. Unsure about whether to listen to it.

so i gave my email and got no song...wtf.

Creeztophair, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 05:14 (sixteen years ago)

they are a small label - give them chance.
i have new single and its a continuation of the bands second album, ie a lot more soulful and song based as opposed to the mass of samples-n-beats that formed the debut.
not too bad, especially if like me,you think that 'don't be afraid ..' is a slow burner of an album.

mark e, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 09:03 (sixteen years ago)

Am I wrong or is there some connection between these guys and Kasabian (beyond, y'know, being British).

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 00:55 (sixteen years ago)

These guys were actually on some sort of cosmic post-rave-fallout bad-trip freakout vibe, Kasabian were always at heart trying to make laddish club-pop...not really the same ballpark. Think of it, stupid as this will sound, as tectonics vs staged detonations

thank you, flipper, for nickelback (country matters), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 01:06 (sixteen years ago)

Dig the new stuff. Kind of the same as Don't Be Afraid of Love but shorter and a little less beat-oriented. I've been listening to the "best of" 2-disc set a lot lately. Considering it came out before Northern Stomp it is quite notable as it has more tracks than their two studio albums combined. A good portion (nearly an entire disc worth) is new/unreleased/B-side material and a lot of it is very good. Plus many of the album tracks had different mixes.

It actually dated kind of well; I mean the Big Beat/electro-Parliament sound isn't really relevant here in 2011 but the music still sounds good - they did have talent. "Warming Up the Brain Farm" is still the most epic song I can think of that clocks around 2 minutes. Absolutely ridiculous but I love it.

listening to the 2002 album tonight and I'm kind of surprised this wasn't huge. it presages a lot of stuff that actually was. its wall to wall bangers. and Bootsy is on a track!

Nice coincidence today; was reading this thread this morning and found a copy of ‘How to Operate With a Blown Mind’ on vinyl in my local shop this afternoon.

Finally remembered to look up the actual James Last sample on the title track only a few months ago. Submitted this to whosampled.com as it was surprisingly not listed already but their backlog can take months.

been a long time since i checked this album out, but yeah, this is all time brilliance.
tis in the same sonic area as the much hyped, but totally forgotten now, Sonny J album.
i.e. dig that album out and you have a whole bunch of extra crowd pleasing weapons.
