Messthetics / Homework Comps

I know these have been discussed here before but I can't find the thread(s). Anyway I've got 10 of these cds now and there really is some great stuff amongst the lo-fi punk thrash majority. Most of the tracks I like are of the arty punk / new wave variety although there's plenty of harder rock US tracks that have caught my ear. I know mr hyped2death has spent years collating and 'remastering' them - so cheers to him - but I've made up a 2cd best of if anyone would like copies : just send me an email. (I actually haven't included the early Scritti tracks 'cause I've got those all on another cd).

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
I'm listening to Messthetics vol. 1 for the first time and there is some awesome stuff on it. It really gives a broad movement of British punk, moving from thrashier stuff to popier stuff to jerkier stuff to new wave-y stuff and all points in between. A lot of it has an almost indie-pop/sheen to it. This is damn good.

xnelio, Friday, 27 June 2003 06:46 (twenty-two years ago)

does anyone have a tracklisting for phil's best-of (or his aussie post-punk cdr)? too embarassed to ask him; but I've been listening to the untracklisted cds for a while, & while fun, I'd like to put some names to the noise.

philT is a legend

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 1 December 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks, gaz - I've got the two homework/messthetics comps, with what I think is a slightly different tracklisting (re : alphabetising, hyphens are ignored on mine, meaning X-X & Xmas Eve switch positions, & the B-Lovers track is the 13th track, pushing everything before that up one place).

I've just got one aussie post-punk comp, 37 tracks long - looked at track times & all I've been able to discover so far is that it's got the entire Seems Twice EP near the start - duration of the first track is 3:10, second 1:06, suggesting Voigt/465, but then it veers off toward stuff which might be SPK & Thought Criminals. Will have to do more research (haha or actually listen to it & hope the track titles turn up in the lyrics).

philT is a legend

Let me second that, and those comps are just wonderful.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
I'm listening to Messthetics #2 right now and am wondering how I missed this terrific series

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Sunday, 18 April 2004 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

All I have is Teenline #1 and Homework #9 and I desperately need more, but I'm waiting for the Homosexuals thing to come out.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Sunday, 18 April 2004 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been downloading/listening to the Messthetics comps religiously lately, and I have one Homework #8 queued but can't find any more.

Animals and Men's Terraplane Fixation (Messthetics 201) is also well worth seeking out.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 18 April 2004 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm totally going to load up on some of the other Hyped2Death CDs once Astral Glamour comes out, espcially the Chemicals Made From Dirt one, if only because I'm so taken with the idea of Long Island artwave circa my childhood.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 18 April 2004 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

the Zoomers CD is great...really twisted acid-damaged rock, reminds me of the Twinkeyz.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I hate to butt in here, I mean certainly Phil is a very nice person to share these things, but...being in a position of owning all the Messthetics CD's myself and having made my very own best-of's from these I'd hate to think anyone would deprive themselves of owning as many of these as they can so they can make their OWN best-of's. That said, Phil chose some of my most favorite tracks, particularly Stolen Power.

Haven't ventured into Homework yet as I have a life long UK bent on things, but will probably do so in the future. I tried one of the Bad Teeth's and didn't like it much. But the point of my posting here is, to each his own!!

bimble (bimble), Sunday, 18 April 2004 05:10 (twenty-one years ago)

aus p-p news:

the slugfuckers re-release is imminent - just waiting on the covers, etc to arrive apparently.

and... guy blackman is thinking of doing a 2nd installment of his fab "Can't Stop It" comp sometime this year or early next year.

phil turnbull (philT), Sunday, 18 April 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the Steve Treatment (Swell Maps crony guy) double CD, but it's all loaded up with everything the guy ever recorded.

Tim Ellison, Sunday, 18 April 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow - I've been looking for those Steve Treatment 45s for years and years. I didn't know there was a double CD.

more news, straight from the mouths of the thought criminals -

"Yes the 2 CD release and also the double clear vinyl edition are mearing completion in time for the 101st anniversary of george orwells birth"

phil turnbull (philT), Monday, 16 May 2005 10:20 (twenty years ago)

The Instant Record Collections are such a good deal! Can't decide whether to go for the Messthetics or Homework though...

Paizuri (riddim) (davidcorp), Thursday, 28 September 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

are you american or british?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 28 September 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

Does it matter? Get both!

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 28 September 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

Canadian. And British. Think I'll get Homework. It's more exotic.

paizuri-san (davidcorp), Thursday, 28 September 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

I was just kidding, get both, of course! Though I think I prefer Homework, which some might thing is suprising coming from me.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 28 September 2006 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

The new legit Messthetics will be missing the Desperate Bicycles, I expect.

The Animals & Men compilation in the Messthetics series is great.

Also I got a well-done reissue of the Rapist in the Park 7" by Anorexia recently. Not on Hyped 2 Death, and probably a bootleg, but 2 of the songs are on one of the Messthetics comps.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 28 September 2006 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

I saw what I thought was a legit Anorexia 7" in that cool record store off Portabello that has loads of old psych stuff. They've also got an original Afrika Korps. Slathered over both....

paizuri-san (davidcorp), Thursday, 28 September 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

five years pass...

Love this shit. Did they release the Messthetics collections on vinyl?

Blomqvist, Jesper (admrl), Monday, 2 April 2012 23:29 (thirteen years ago)

i didn't post about it here, but CW came by my store recently and told me he is working on regional power pop comps with numero group. on vinyl. don't think any of his own label stuff is on vinyl. i could be wrong.
