I hear things, but should I trust them?

simona, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think that you should listen to them but who am I to tell you what you shoudl listen to. As to whether I think they are any good, well, no, but I like At The Drive-In so I guess that discounts me. They're as boring plodders as all the other of the latest bunch of NME EMO, Rock, critical darlings. That may be lazy of me to say, but I'm tired and its all I can think of right now.

powertonevolume, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've seen their name appear here now at least three times. Och!

Their music's good -- though not wildly original. Their lead singer looks like Syd Barrett, their bass player is the son of the fat guy in The Call who looked like a beardy Fred Flintstone, and their album is basically wholly co-opted from the first two discs by the woefully superior Jesus & Mary Chain.

Always trust things. They can't lie like people can.

BMRC: Sounded GRATE on instore play, so I bought it. Sounded, eh, at home. It's in v. infrequent rotation for me, but not a complete write-off. Plus, I never owned that much JAMC, so now I have an substitute.

I'd say that I much prefer them to the Strokes. Which does not mean a lot. At least they know how to write songs and at first listen their music does not annoy me. Another point in their favor is that I will probably relisten to Ride soon. They have one song, forgotten the name, which sounds like the new single by Ride.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ahhh, ride. what a band.

Poops McGee, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ride = goodness. BRMC = not so goodness. Indeed, silliness.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ride/BRMC/Strokes= shit

Julio Desouza, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I realize I sound like a moron but what does BRMC stand for?

ejad, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ride is on the cover of the new MAGNET. *shrug*

Curt, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

BIG RIGOR MORTIS COCK

The guru, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

To answer correctly makes one sound like a moron: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Curt, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

My brother keeps telling me that this is good, but I can't figure out why. The single ("What Ever Happened to My Rock and Roll" or something like that) is an exciting, for the moment, disposable rock song, but the rest is just plodding and boring, like they listened to the right bands (The Cure, JAMC, Ride) but they didn't learn anything from them. Overhyped not really worth the time.

Miranda, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio wrote, "Ride/BRMC/Strokes= shit."

Actually, Ride was an amazing band. 'Nowhere' is stellar; it's one of the best albums of the 90s. BRMC are just horrifically dull imitators of the superb Jesus and Mary Chain; they seem presqueezed from some Virgin factory mold; they're a rather weak attempt to copy some Creation magic (that's Creation the label), but they fail miserably. Ah, the Strokes; so dull, so much hype. They're a little bit fun here and there, but not worth a second thought or any more words from me. So, back to the original question. I wouldn't waste time listening to BRMC. Just put on some Jesus and Mary Chain... you can't go wrong with 'Darklands' or 'Psychocandy.'

Tim DiGravina, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

By BMRC, which band are you referring to? The Black Motorcycle whatever they're called band or the Bunnyrabbit Music Resource Center.

Lord Custos, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

BRMC = Jesus & Mary Chain meets The Verve's first album in my book, although as most have said it's not quite as good as such comparisons would suggest. Ironically for all their bad-boy marketing, BRMC just don't have the "personality" that those two bands have - neither JAMC's gift for gorgeous-mutilated pop songs nor the original McCabe-Ashcroft Donovan-resurrection hippy-dippyism. It's all very pleasant in a loud brooding 'n' gliding sort of way. Catherine Wheel's first album would be another reference point - and like Catherine Wheel the vocalist is pleasant-sounding but absolutely devoid of inflection.

Interesting though how what is essentially a post-shoegazer album is being grouped in with the current US garage rock invasion; the song about rock'n'roll is pretty much the Trojan Horse on an album that would much rather drift than snap (The Strokes) or bludgeon (The White Stripes).

Tim, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'whatever happened to my rock'n'roll' sounds great on the radio though.

keith, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My concert ticket said Black Rebel MC

two years pass...

OTM with the trojan horse comment. The song sticks out like a sore thumb compared to everything else on the album.

Actually, if you can track down the first album demos, they make a much better first album than what was actually released. And best of all: no "Whatever Happened to My Rock'n'Roll".

i'd forgotten this band existed. that second album was uninspiring to say the least.

hahah I was about to post "i had forgotten about this band's existence."

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 21 October 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I could forget about this band's existence.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 October 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

if i wanted a JAMC pastiche i'd go with the raveonettes, who are at least fun.

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Thursday, 21 October 2004 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Have they called it quits yet? Their last album sank like a stone. Are they still signed, we think?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 21 October 2004 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I was under the impression that Virgin canned their ass. This was after they moved to the UK thinking that they would be big over there. I wept crocodile tears for their fate.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 October 2004 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The scuttlebut is that they got dropped, but the band claims that they wanted to leave the label.

Edward Bax, Thursday, 21 October 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

No. Next question?

(Though I've read some interesting Nick Jago slash in the past...)

Weird.
