Spin Has put another list. This time of the Only Bands that Matter. Oddly enough....Bob Dylan is the only 'band' they list that isn't super-recent. Nothing before 1999 seems to matter to Spin.

Lord Custos, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My stomach just turned.

Suddenly the timing of Alan Light's departure makes sense.

Yancey, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Next stop: Spins Greatest Heavy Metal Bands of All Time List:
1. Staind
2. Slipknot
3. Christina Aguiler

Lord Custos, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what are you talking about, this list is fantastic! seriously i like over two thirds of the artists on it, i have never ever seen a list that good before.

ethan, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

since when does fucking CREED matter to anyone but Jesus Freaks in the bible belt and mullet wearing trash. I threw up in my mouth when i saw this list.

NOTE TO SPIN: YOUR LISTS SUCK AND REALLY DON"T MATTER

Poops McGee, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nelly Furtado?

... matters?

Dave225, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I threw up in my mouth

Better than through other bodily orifices, I guess.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm just annoyed by Spin's abandonment of the Feature Article for all these stupid LISTS!

By the way, wouldn't that Best Heavy Metal list Lord Custos constructed be the sort of thing Chuck Eddy would create (sans Staind)?

David Raposa, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The only bands that matter?? This list is absurd. I've never even heard a note by more than half the bands. Even the bands on the list I like I wouldn't elevate to "only bands that matter" status.

Sean, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess there will be more room for fashion spreads in the next issues. This is assuming that they wouldn't want to cover bands/artists that don't matter in the future.

Andy K, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The only bands that matter?? This list is absurd. I've never even heard a note by more than half the bands.

i think this pretty much explains itself.

ethan, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i have never ever seen a list that good before.

I originally read this as a joke. Poor ethan.

Sean, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The list is like anyone who's had some staying power on the latest popcharts, plus the designated next big thangs. A pretty accurate title for the list then, if you consider "mattering" meaning something about the broad cultural landscape of America.

pmg: dismissing religious bands as "irrelevant" in the most religious nation in the major industrial world is just stupid.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This list should be title "Bands With the Most Inexplicably Devout Followings".

And subtitled "...and Therefore Most Easily Manipulated Into Magazine Buying".

Curt, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the only thing that bugs me about this list is Custos using the same fucking lame joke 4 times ( The Rolling Stones? I thought this band was named The Beatles nyuck nyuck nyuck)

fritz, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and this is something new?

ethan, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why isn't Lee Greenwood on this list?

Kris, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That was Custos? I thought it was SPIN in cheeky self-deprecation. I feel so used.

Curt, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

One question: Queens Of The Stone Age? I thought their fad-cycle had passed.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, Linkin Park should be way higher than Radiohead, perhaps even #1.

Kris, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it would've been funny if he had done the 'i thought these guys were called the (whatever)' joke for every band on the list.

ethan, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Definite Jux? As in Def Jux, the record label?

Dare, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah i always thought it was 'definitive jux'.

ethan, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Where's Hoobastank? Fuckin' bullshit, man.

Actually, I'm surprised Sleater Kinney or Le Tigre didn't make the cut. I haven't read Spin in awhile, but I guess they're over post-riot grrrl indie, it's all about Alicia and Nelly now.

Arthur, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's sad that so many of these bands are but poor twelfth-generation photocopies of good bands. for instance, instead of weezer they might have written "pixies". or they could have written "the buzzcocks" or "operation ivy" (for west-coast influence) instead of "blink 182". instead of "alicia keys" maybe "billie holiday". instead of "strokes" maybe "VU". instead of "white stripes" maybe "led zeppelin" or something.

my theory is that spin just published a list of bands who advertise in spin and named them the "only bands that matter".

geeta, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Now hold on, Billie Holiday is great and all, but I think this list is talking about people making music now.

Mark, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Bob Dylan is the only 'band' they list that isn't super-recent. Nothing before 1999 seems to matter to Spin."

Nobody gets away with implying that U2 isn't over the hill on my watch.

My only problem with this list is that there aren't enough electronic artists...And who the fuck is Dashboard Confessional anyway?

Keiko, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

who cares? spin SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS don't buy it ever

g, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dashboard Confessional = nothing less than emo

Curt, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...instead of weezer they might have written "pixies". or they could have written "the buzzcocks" or "operation ivy" (for west-coast influence) instead of "blink 182". instead of "alicia keys" maybe "billie holiday..."

and instead of "spin" they could be called "mojo".

fritz, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

pmg: dismissing religious bands as "irrelevant" in the most religious nation in the major industrial world is just stupid.

Very true! Instead, let us consider religion and if it's stupid instead. *hides*

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dude, Blink sounds NOTHING LIKE the Buzzcocks. Duh. Blink are punk.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is the problem, though.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Further evidence that SPIN has gone from being a once-upon-a-time credible music magazine with actual vision to merely a consumer-minded tip-sheet that positively PANDERS to whistleheaded teenagers.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

shock shock horror horror

fritz, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

pmg: dismissing religious bands as "irrelevant" in the most religious nation in the major industrial world is just stupid.
Hmm. I didn't really mean irrelevant due to religious reasons, I meant, Oh, I dunno...artistically? I always thought of Creed as merely a cheesy copy of Jars of Clay, which in turn is a cheesy copy of DC Talk, which in turn is a cheesy copy of a Pearl Jam wannabe with hastily tacked on "gospel" lyrics.

Lord Custos, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They could throw in Spiritualized for religious band.

A Nairn, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sigur Ros matter about as much as whether I decide to have tea or coffee with my morning toast.

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like many of the bands on this list, but it's the ones I don't like (obviously) and the list as-a-whole-in-itself that I dislike. It makes me very sad. I now mumble something about it being closed-minded! Popist! that's the word I was looking for!

Dan Irons, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

eh. i would argue that the buzzcocks' poppy, catchy, sing-a-long stuff (say, from singles going steady) helped to lay the groundwork for pop-punk as we know it now. though i am not terribly familiar with blink 182's music, i would say that pop-punk is what they're aiming for.

also about these hip-hop/DJ/etc choices...what the fuck? outkast & dj shadow though..roXor (i can't believe i just wrote that.) eminem is at least controversial. dr dre and jay-z debatable. DMX, though, he just sucks.

ok new theory: spin just got bored and listed all the people that rolling stone has done cover stories on recent

geeta, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

er, i meant 'recently'. dude i bet fugazi's psyched that (according to spin) they're almost as good as the incubus! also can someone please explain all the buzz about dashboard confessional to me? i am thinking already that they suck but i can't place their sound.

er suXor

jfgl

geeta, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

god damn it, i meant "incubus", not "the incubus". now all those 14-year-old incubus fans who find this page via google are going to kick my ass.

my sincere apologie

geeta, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

its got jigga at one so thats ok with me, but richie hawtin? thats just silly, its a long time since fu2, substance abuse, circuit breaker shit, or even spastik. dull

gareth, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

where's jon bon jovi and ricki martin - they matter.

QUeen G, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dashboard confessional guy is like the biker version of bob wratten. used to be oh so hardcore now he's got crying on his mind.

keith, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Seriously, you're saying DE9 was dull? Consumed I could understand, although I couldn't disagree more. (And I couldn't care a jot whether or not SPIN lists Hawtin.)

Curt, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Everytime there's some lame fucking list published somewhere you all get worked up about it. Every time I point out that there's a major holiday coming up, so they have to turn around the edition quickly with minimum effort, and lists are the easiest way to do that. Haven't you noticed how early Easter is this year? All these bands suck anyway, even the ones I like. What is 'Spin' by the way?

Snotty Moore, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I always thought of Creed as merely a cheesy copy of Jars of Clay, which in turn is a cheesy copy of DC Talk, which in turn is a cheesy copy of a Pearl Jam wannabe with hastily tacked on "gospel" lyrics.

and here i thought lord custos was just a cheesy copy of doom patrol.

(no offense to doomie, mind.)

i feel genuinely sorry for almost everyone who posted to this thread.

jess, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and here i thought lord custos was just a cheesy copy of doom patrol.
Naw, more a subtle pastiche of Ostranders Suicide Squad and Morrisons New X-men.

Lord Custos, Thursday, 7 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three months pass...
where's linkin park?!

Janice Underwood, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nm i see that sucks 7?!

Janice Underwood, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Before I checked the date on this thread, I thogh Spin had put out yet another stupid list. Glad to see they haven't!

Dave225, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I told you Linkin Park should've been number one, 50 million Jeff Hardy fans can't be wrong.

Kris, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The only place that new list gets dumb is at the end when it veers into NME territory.

Sterling Clover, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That list looks like something freaky trigger would put together.

Marc, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not with the Dave Matthews Band on there.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Or Creed AND P.O.D.

Dan Perry, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What? Arn't those bands mainstream enough for freaky trigger?

If they would remove a band from the list it would probably be White Stripes.

Marc, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

five months pass...
uh...nothing before 1999? what about fugazi? they have been around since late 80's....

X, Friday, 15 November 2002 02:32 (twenty-three years ago)

...note: subtitled "The top 40 semi-rock bands that are being pushed by the big five, so please quit trading mp3s, guilt trip your mom for her credit card and go to Virgin music you stupid teenage bastards."
