Kanye West poses as Jesus on cover of Rolling Stone magazine
NEW YORK (AP) — Kanye West, with a crown of thorns atop his head, poses as Jesus Christ on the cover of the upcoming issue of Rolling Stone.
The outspoken rapper defends his brash attitude inside the magazine’s pages, on newsstands Friday. He is also pictured posing as Muhammad Ali.
“In America, they want you to accomplish these great feats, to pull off these David Copperfield-type stunts,” he says. “You want me to be great, but you don’t ever want me to say I’m great?”
West also says his hit song Gold Digger was the best song last year and that it should have been nominated for the Grammy’s best rap song category: “That’s a gimme Grammy.”
Nevertheless, the 27-year-old is nominated for eight awards, including album of the year for his sophomore album, Late Registration. The Grammys will be presented Feb. 8.
West has always been forthright in saying what he feels, most famously when he said “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” during a telethon for hurricane Katrina victims.
“If I was more complacent and I let things slide, my life would be easier, but you all wouldn’t be as entertained,” he says. “My misery is your pleasure.”
The strangest tangent of the Rolling Stone story, however, is when West says he’s addicted to pornography. He remembers first seeing his father’s Playboy magazine when he was five years old.
“Right then,” West says, laughing, “it was like, ‘Houston, we have a problem.’ ”

Never thought I'd see Jesus and Battlestar Galactica referenced in the same place. Outside of Mormon studies that is.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

Isn't Battlestar Galactica all Deuteronomy?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, but neither Jesus nor Kanye had much to do with that.

What's Billy Joel saying now?

Wait, since when did James Blunt get a foothold over here? Horrifying.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

Ned, "You're Beautiful" is in the top 20 over here now.

There are some things I'm glad I don't know.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

my favorite james blunt moment so far was the day before he was on the today show and they played a clip of the "you're beautiful" video and al roker was totally incredulous: "wait, he actually SOUNDS like that? there's not something wrong with him??"

Haha awesome.

I was listening to the radio in the car a few days ago, and I couldn't figure out why the hell the Split Enz guy was singing a particularly cheesy 90s pop ballad with that cartoon voice. I mean, I know he can sing "normally", so what the hell was he thinking? I kept expecting it to break into some wacky polka section or something, but no dice, the song seemed to be for real.

Quote the DJ: "That was James Blunt with 'You're Beautiful'"

Øystein (Øystein), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

Hahahah, Jonah Goldberg coming through! I knew that wouldn't take long:

Kayne West's Jesus schtick is intended to buy some controversy. He's posing as Jesus for Rolling Stone. I really hope the religious right doesn't take the bait. It's so cheap and so lame. It'd be better if this just went by as a Jump-the-Shark moment for another arrogant buffoon.

The quotes from this write up simply demonstrate that the guy sees controversy as a business model. The cynicism shouldn't be rewarded. And Rolling Stone should be mocked for ignored for this parasitical stunt.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

I hope Goldberg doesn't own any Beatles albums.

js (honestengine), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

i bet he owns the white album.

May 2007: Kanye West Reveals Himself To Be A Bisexual Man with No Homosexual Experience

"America just ain't ready for a famous black man who loves other black men. I'm not saying Kanye West is that man. I'm curious, but I'm not that curious, you know? Kanye West is more like John the Baptist or maybe like a black Willy Wonka showing the next wave of people who are gonna love chocolate in ways that America isn't used to people loving; I'm pointing to that figure and saying that he will be here in the future, America....Kanye West is just 'sorta' that guy. I still love women though, but I like men too sometimes. I just don't like men enough to have sex with them. I ain't gay, but I love men. I'm just an incredibly complex being, man. That's just who I am. People just need to learn that Kanye is gonna be Kanye and quit hating me for that."
