a rip of their Breezeblock mix is up at http://www.wordthecat.com

manuel (manuel), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 08:05 (twenty years ago)

thanks! lots of people getting excited by these guys eh? totally passed me by before (had a listen to four tracks, probably not in the right mood at the time) will try again :)

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 12:14 (twenty years ago)

don't know anything much about them, but have a handful of singles by them that are really terrific. thanks for the breezeblock link

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 15:08 (twenty years ago)

Dusted profiled them today. It's mainly about how no one knows anything about them. But there is a track to download ....

Renard (Renard), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 20:10 (twenty years ago)

also, there's this

Renard (Renard), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 20:14 (twenty years ago)

I think they're more interesting in their visual presentation and the sheer variety of styles rather than actual depths to the tracks themselves, but it's still sort of captivating. I think I like "Foller" the best so far.

mike powell (mike powell), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 20:20 (twenty years ago)

Wow. Thanks for pointing this out. Hater, Foller, Sir, the new tracks in that mix, just about everything these guys/girls/? do is verrrrrry nice.

Album will be coming out in August, Mary Ann Hobbs said just before that mix, so they finally got signed? Anybody know who to?

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 5 February 2006 19:26 (twenty years ago)

There are loads of samples on boomkat.com. I'm really not sure what to make of this lot. I'm loving the genre hopping that they are doing. I'm most curious about the cogmac/queen bee 7" as I don't quite get what it's all about.

I may be being a total spaz but I can't seem to find the breezeblock mix on www.wordthecat.com. Can someone point out exactly where it is or even ysi it?

hmmm (hmmm), Sunday, 5 February 2006 20:22 (twenty years ago)

(the last track, "broken," seems to be missing from that mp3 though)

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 5 February 2006 20:29 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
I'll tell you what I know (at least some of it anyway!).

The Various guys aren't as secretive as you might think. They are more interested in making music than doing press stuff and creating hpye. Somehow it has had the oppossite effect, as the word has got round that they are something of an enigma.

I have heard some of their newer stuff and it is even better than the stuff you have heard. A track called Sweetness stands out for me.

Look out for news about a record deal / singles / albums. I don't want to say too much as its not really my place. Also expect to see them playing out more in 2006.

could anyone repost those tracks? the link on the site is broken.

London meets Barcelona on Sonar Sunday in an underground alternative end to the weekend, featuring XL Recordings' brand new signing Various Production, along with the UK's Po-ski (Werk), Ed Devane (Touchin’ Bass), Arson residents, and a special guest appearance.

Various Production (XL) – Mysterious, UK-based collective of producers and vocalists have had many of the biggest independent labels fighting each other to sign them on the strength of a series of hard-to-find 7” and 12” releases over the last two years. Their entirely unique blend of dancehall, folk, heavy bass frequencies and traditional vocals has torn up the rulebook in 2006 – and this is Europe’s exclusive chance to check them out in a secret appearance during the Sonar Festival.

Pasquale C. (peak_it), Saturday, 1 July 2006 12:39 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks Pasquale. Btw, i ordered the 2 12"s from the link you provided and also the 3x7" pack Cargo was offering. Switched over to Boomkat and bought the CD too. I was first exposed to Various Production in London this winter and was absolutely floored by the sounds and visual presentation on the Hater 7". I need a copy of the Too Lost In You 12" and the Cognac 7" if you've got spares.

I've made a CD with all their tracks and 1 CD with their Breezeblock and the Burial Breezeblock and they've been my soundtracks for a couple months now. I hope this new album can match the diverse, intense beauty on their previous work.

What else do you know about them?

bld (brother loves dub), Saturday, 1 July 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

do you have soulseek?

http://www.slsknet.org/download.html

Pasquale C. (peak_it), Saturday, 1 July 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

i have the files for those 2 releases, but i don't have the actual records, which i'd like

yes, i use SolarSeek on a Mac though.

Title: The World is Gone album
Label: XL/Various
Cat Number: XLCD204
Formats: CD/Triple Vinyl/Download
Release Date: August 7th 2006
Website: http://www.various.co.uk

Pasquale C. (peak_it), Sunday, 2 July 2006 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, it's the CD/triple LP. That "ships in 11 days" is probably wrong.

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 2 July 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

i certainly hope it ships in 11days. i ordered a copy yesterday. can't wait to get this and those limited 12"s. i even like their irish death folk tunes!

are people in Various Production at all related to the Marcia Blaine Project on HighPoint LowLife?

sir (brother loves dub), Sunday, 2 July 2006 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

and today it's "ships in 10 days" - even their release date is a mystery, woo!

StanM (StanM), Monday, 3 July 2006 09:20 (nineteen years ago)

that is a counter that's why now is "ships in 10 days" :)
but i'm still not sure if it's right!? ;)

are people in Various Production at all related to the Marcia Blaine Project on HighPoint LowLife?

Probably not. They're from London, the Marcia Blaine Project is from Glasgow...

Various Production(s) mention why they want to be anonymous in this interview (that mentions their names, duh) and this is their studio, apparently. (first link found by Googling, second is from a message by Mike Paradinas on the Planet Mu board)

is that Damon Albarn on Sweetness?

StanM (StanM), Friday, 21 July 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

Very nice album, by the way. Favourite new track: Sweetness.

"could see this track be released as a single"/"album track" proportion: 9/3

StanM (StanM), Friday, 21 July 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

gig in manc tonight. bierkeller 10-3.

pisces (piscesx), Friday, 21 July 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

It's the dubstep/folk crossover! That may sound crass, but it's exceptionally raealised. Best debut album of the year?

JoB (JoB), Friday, 28 July 2006 10:11 (nineteen years ago)

It's the dubstep/folk crossover!

TRIP HOP

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 28 July 2006 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

Folktronica (with Momus reference!) (none of the examples listed there remind me of Various or actual folk, though)

StanM (StanM), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:21 (nineteen years ago)

The singles work as self-contained stylistic exercises, but I found the album underwhelming.

Crocus Behemoth (modern dance), Friday, 28 July 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

Brilliant electronic singles artist in disappointing album shock!

(yeah, it's a best of, but there's no album feel to it)

StanM (StanM), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

i dont understand you guys!?!? i like the album very much!

StanM (StanM), Friday, 28 July 2006 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

i hope that homedit is the version with vocals for me one of the best vp tracks!!!

ten months pass...

i found a cheap promo copy of the cd and was totally not into it. "Sub-portishead trip-hoppers" kinda sums it up. i seemed really into them when i heard that breezblock mix last year.

jaxon, Monday, 9 July 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

Saw them live at the Pukkelpop festival in Belgium on Friday, it was a little strange initially (four very different vocalists), but they played great versions of some of the tracks off the album (Hater was longer and had a new big hard finale). Halfway through, the singers left and we got half an hour of brilliant new material, pretty hard (I guess I'll call it dubstep with more percussion and variation than regular dubstep - they played right after an (also great) DJ set from Skream, interesting contrast with what he played).

So, lots of new material on the way!

StanM, Monday, 20 August 2007 06:25 (eighteen years ago)

pictures of 3 of the 4 singers (4th one looked like Kele Okereke (bloc party)'s skinny brother) here: http://blogs.humo.be/blogs/2007/08/various_chateau.asp

StanM, Monday, 20 August 2007 08:48 (eighteen years ago)

three years pass...

Figures. Given the crypto-mysterioso nature of this group, this thread is just about as useful as I expected.

I've had "World is Not Gone" since it came out, but the singles are way too expensive for my tastes (no mp3s, please). But, their righteous beats are undeniable - even if they do tend a bit more into house than I typically like.

suspecterrain, Sunday, 6 February 2011 18:20 (fifteen years ago)

thought their remix of lauren pritchard's "stuck" last year was absolutely gorgeous, shame it didn't get picke dup more

surely its time for another album ?

whether this is deemed to trip hop/folktronica/dubstep or whatever, i think this album still sounds ace.
