Just got tickets for this, what are these lads like live?
Any good?

davidbanner, Wednesday, 25 January 2006 11:47 (twenty years ago)

absolutely. i've only seen Sunn but i'm still awesomized, saw them last year in april or may or something

it's the real bodymusic

rizzx (rizzx), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 13:24 (twenty years ago)

sunn 0))) beats any chirpractic body massage therapy hands down. my one piece of advice find the part of the room with maximum physical resonance.
really though your reaction will be 5 minutes of 2this is the best thing ever", a further 10 minutes of "I'm a bit bored now", followed by the 45 minute money shot of drone nirvana.

simon 803 (simon 803), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 13:42 (twenty years ago)

boom..and there u have it. OTM mister

rizzx (rizzx), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 13:46 (twenty years ago)

i'm seeing them in glasgow - i hope - and i cannot fucking wait.

i'm taking spare underpants, just in case ;) ;)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:14 (twenty years ago)

I'm really looking forward to both Earth and Sunn o))) in Glasgow.
I've never been to the ABC/ABC2. I wonder what the sound is like there.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:20 (twenty years ago)

sound is good at the abc. to be honest I wouldn't worry about the sound cos their backline is big enough to override almost everything anyway.

simon 803 (simon 803), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 15:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm so glad I'm seeing them at the Thekla in Bristol - Pelican the other month felt like being punched hard in the chest, so I shudder to think what Sunn will sound like in there. I suspect I will shudder on the night too.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 15:17 (twenty years ago)

that reminds me: pelican are coming back to the ABC in march. i need to sort out tickets for that too.

sunn0))) are at ABC2, i think: i've not been in there yet. but i've seen mogwai, the proclaimers and antony and the johnsons (christ, what a mixture) at ABC1 and the sound's been perfect for each.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 15:57 (twenty years ago)

like simon 803 says: the best thing for this gig will be to find a spot in the room where you can feel, not just hear.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 15:58 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
that was a bit too busy. anyway, they were half great, half boring, i thought (pretty much as i'd expected).

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 11 February 2006 09:23 (nineteen years ago)

I'll be at the glasgow show; see you there, grimly

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 11 February 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

fear the ABC is too quiet tho

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 11 February 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

i missed them ;(

Yawn (Wintermute), Saturday, 11 February 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

I've never been to the ABC. I'm looking forward to seeing both Earth & Sunn o))).

Anyone know if it's just the 2 bands or is there an opening act?

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Saturday, 11 February 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

No opener last night in Leeds. Massive all-consuming sonic totality, though. Like nothing I've ever heard (or felt). Staggeringly immense. Earth also hit the mark, halfway between Pentastar and Hex, but with a definite nod towards the bass frequencies. The drummer's terrible though.

myopic_void (myopic_void), Sunday, 12 February 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

annoyingly, i won't be there tonight. long story. too tedious to explain. i'll be hunched over a computer going "shit" a lot instead. have fun, y'all.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 12 February 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

Thats a shame grimly.
Theres lots of tour only merch on sale at the gigs and its the only place to get them unless you want to play inflated ebay prices.
(that is if it isnt already sold out, supposedly people have been buying multiple copies of everything at the previous 3 gigs of the tour presumably to sell on ebay)

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Sunday, 12 February 2006 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i wish i'd realised the whole ebay thing before the gig, could have made the price of the ticket back...

toby (tsg20), Sunday, 12 February 2006 22:45 (nineteen years ago)

The Sunn/Earth tour 12" was at 46 bucks yesterday on ebay with 5 days left.

adam (adam), Sunday, 12 February 2006 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

Was nothing left in glasgow.
No Sunn O))) Shirts/hoodies left at all. 1 earth shirt(i got one)
No live cd. No VINYL apart from the sunno)))/Earth split.(which i got)

There was some other earth cds and a few other things.
I cant believe it was all sold before they hit glasgow. I bet 75% of it is on ebay already.
I really wanted a Sunno))) shirt as well.

But on to more important things. The gig was amazing.
Earth were fabulous. Played 2 old songs too Ouroborous and Coda. The other 3 tracks were from Hex. 45 min set. Awesome stuff.
I was right in front of dylan for the whole set.

Sunno))) were incredible. Never been to such a loud gig before and the whole place was literally shaking. It was like a constant high powered foot massage. Malefic came on after half an hour and did his stuff for the remainder. I was literally right in front of him.
My ears will never be the same after this. Surprisingly they seem to be ok now. Heres hoping.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Sunday, 12 February 2006 23:23 (nineteen years ago)

Awesome. The Sunn merchandising juggernaut astounds me. Have you been to the Southern Lord "new products" forum? Sick sick sick.

adam (adam), Sunday, 12 February 2006 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah i'm on there hehe.
The worst is the "Items for sale" where people buy multiple copies of rare stuff and sell them sealed for crazy prices there.
They know whats rare and buy it knowing a fan wants that stuff and pays for it.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Sunday, 12 February 2006 23:53 (nineteen years ago)

4 days left and its $62/£35.52 already.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Monday, 13 February 2006 00:05 (nineteen years ago)

I've decided that O'Malley crap only gets bought if it's a new album or it is in some way interesting (like the Fungal Hex 2lp). Completism re: that dude is folly.

adam (adam), Monday, 13 February 2006 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

My ears are (surprisingly, since i stood at the very front) totally fine today.

What a gig that was.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Monday, 13 February 2006 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

fuck.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:03 (nineteen years ago)

I was at the Glasgow show. Earth were pretty good, but Sunn completely blew me away, so loud and intense as hell!

Regarding the lack of merch, I heard that at the show in London people were going up and dropping 200 quid, no doubt with the intention of selling most of it on eBay.

jacderida (jacderida), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:07 (nineteen years ago)

I wish Sunn would tour the US as much as Europe, and at least come to Texas. C'mon, it's Southern Lord.

OTH, I got Black One on 2xLP today. Beautiful, sturdy as hell packaging. The cover is all textured like some classic LP's. 180 gram + poster = hell yes.

Harpal (harpal), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

Sunn o))) toured with Boris last year in the US.

Did anyone make it to the other UK dates?

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 09:07 (nineteen years ago)

Bristol was great last night.

Philip Best/Consumer Electronics was first and, frankly, did exactly what you'd expect given his Whitehouse background. Hugely entertaining stuff though, worth the price of admission alone.

Earth were really interesting. It's strange how completely sparse their music is, how much space there is in it, which suits the Country influence on the new material down to the ground. "Like Morricone on mogadon", I heard someone else say afterwards. The drummer is dreadful though.

Sunn were... umm... patchy. Could have been much louder, even if at times it felt like being punched in the face. There were just times when it lost its way, sort of meandering in search of the sound - the only way to approach it was to close your eyes and feel the music envelop you like a womb. I was curious at to what would happen when Malefic came on, but I actually thought the show was much, much stronger when he was on stage.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 10:11 (nineteen years ago)

Did you lose your shit?

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 10:17 (nineteen years ago)

No, but it cleared up my sinuses.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno if you saw Earth the last time they were in Bristol (September I think) but if anything she was more on point last night. Good show all round though pretty much; I still don't get anything remotely, uh, transcendental or whatever from Sunn0))), let alone be moved to throw up, but I enjoy them

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 11:33 (nineteen years ago)

I missed Earth last time, wasn't about. I think her playing improved when she got that chair to replace her stool.

You should have said you were going, we could have had a FAP))).

so they're doing a Moog-set at the Domino Festival in Brussels, has anybody ever witnessed this?

rizzx (Rizz), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

three years pass...

They're playing a really intimate show at Corsica studios this Sunday....I can't wait. Should I invest in some earplugs though?

davek_00, Friday, 20 February 2009 21:34 (sixteen years ago)

Depends on the sound system Dave. Sometimes Sunn0))) can be massively loud, but in a frequency range that is felt more massively than it is heard. Other times, they are so loud it is painful and potentially destructive to hearing.

Of course it's always smarter to have the ear plugs on hand, just in case.

A set of musician's earplugs that are molded to your ears and reduce decibels but not frequencies are about $175. A fantastic investment for anyone who enjoys a lot of live music.

Nate Carson, Friday, 20 February 2009 21:41 (sixteen years ago)

yes get earplugs. you will need them. Sponge ones worked fine for me.

The User Formerly Known As Pfunkboy Latterly Known as.. (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 20 February 2009 21:52 (sixteen years ago)

Ooh no, sponge ones really do muffle the sound something awful. You can get cheapo generic musicians' earplugs for about a tenner and they're way better than sponge.
