I've been going off Adrian Sherwood in recent times, but I've just come into possession of the New Age Steppers record and it's great fun. I have my favourite on-U things. Some of it's a bit boring too, let's be honest. I don't think there's been an on-U appraisal on ILM, so let me know what you think in 2002.

Search : Prince Far i "Bedward the Flying Preacher", Mikey Dread "Autobiography", Dub Syndicate "Pounding System".

The music of On-U Sound (and associated labels) seems very promising in theory. Bringing together musicians from the worlds of post-punk, hip-hop and reggae is a wonderful idea. However I've rarely been excited by actual On-U product. 70s Jamaican dub is usually warm and blissful, but most of Sherwood's productions are grey and metallic.

African Head Charge, Dub Syndicate, 'Bedward' by Singers & Players, Mark Stewart & the Maffia, Gary Clail and all those wonderful Barmy Army football songs. I think they released some Lee Perry too. That's pretty terrific for a little label.

the early fats comet, tackhead and gary clail 12"s, mark stewart, singers and players, african head charge, dub syndicate playgroup, new age steppers, pay it all back vol 1, lee scratch perry - time boom x de devil dead, numerous remixes for amongst others ministry, skinny puppy, pankow, cabaret voltaire etc. etc. not a bad track record. since then - hmmm? but hey, the man has done more than enough for one lifetime.

"Gary Clail's Tackhead Sound System" a.k.a. "Tackhead Tape Time" = total classic, even now. I also adore Sherwood's insane violent remix of Depeche Mode's "Master & Servant," plus his frog-in-a-blender version of "People Are People," retitled "Are People People?"

I too love Bedward The Flying Preacher and other dubby stuff but I also have the feeling that Dub Syndicate aren't the genuises I first took them to be. A lot of the noises sound gloopy and muddy these days. One of my favourite things about Sherwood is that he was once quoted as saying [words to the effect of] 'Reggae is about entering the space between the notes; think of it as being like a bouncy castle!' Fabulous.

three years pass...
I have Singers and Players' War of Words, Mark Stewart and the Maffia's As the Veneer of Democracy Starts to Fade (which was inspired heavily by The Missing Brazilians' Warzone), and the aforementioned New Age Steppers LP...all classic.
