The Chambers Brothers

Hello, I'm new here, so stroke me gently.

Is anyone familiar with The Chambers Brothers, and am I right in thinking none of their albums are on CD? Their best-known song is 'Time Has Come Today' which I think has popped up on the odd soundtrack/compilation CD, but their real work of genius IMHO is 'New Generation', from the album of the same name. For most of its 14 minutes, it's the greatest dance track ever, and I'd love to find a full version on CD or the net.

you can find that shit on cd. my dad opened for the chambers brothers and johnny guitar watson a few years ago. they were funny.

Who's, as the saying goes, your daddy?

Still don't think you can find that 'shit' on cd, though.

Anyone heard Sony's 2000 re-mastered version of The Time Has Come? In addition to bonus tracks, there's an original 1968 radio advert for the album, and I swear the guy reading the ad sounds exactly like MORGAN FREEMAN! No way of knowing if it's actually him or not (at least one Amazon.com reviewer has also noted the similarity), but on "Inside The Actor's Studio" Freeman said that he was in New York in the late '60s, working on Broadway and doing commercials to pay the bills. And CBS/Columbia's promotional department was presumably headquartered in New York too, so who knows? It may actually be him.

I just heard the Chambers Brothers for the first time today. "People Get Ready". Wow. Just freakin' wow.

That's all. Carry on.

Wait. I lied. I knew "Time Has Come Today"...but this feels like a different band, compared to "Get Ready".

I heard "Time Has Come Today" as a 6-year-old on the radio in Detroit and I haven't been the same since. It was my entrance point into psychedelia. Reverbed cowbell will always be CLASSIC.

Is it bad that the cowbell annoyed the SHIT out of me?

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 06:42 (nineteen years ago)

cowbells in general? yes.

shadeball (chaki), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 06:48 (nineteen years ago)

Weirdness. I had my Ipod on shuffle this morning on the way to work and "Uptown" by Chambers Brothers came on, and now there's a thread about them on ILM! Anyway, I like that song but don't know their other stuff. Is there a recommended album/compilation to get??

inconsistent album band w/a handful of great songs IMO.

I'd go w/ the relatively recent Time Has Come Today: The Best of The Chambers Brothers CD over the brief LP era Greatest Hits. "Time" is a bit cliched to my jaded ears but "I Can't Stand It" and their cover of Otis Redding's "Can't Turn You Lose" still do the goosebumps thing, also check out "Funky" and "All Strung Out Over You." From what I've read they were a super-tight club band in late 60s NYC, cranking out covers & originals.

a bit inconsistent but their time has come today album is prob their best. i love them.

naw he says they're "dub metal," whatever the fuck that is.

Someone somewhere out in mp3blogland put up "People Get Ready" last year and it's worked its way into my regular rotation. Its got a wonderful, elegant tempo to it doesn't it?

Billy Pilgrim (Billy Pilgrim), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

Absolutely. I mean, not taking anything away from Curtis, who's still the man, but they definitely give the song a beautiful gospel feel.

Horrible. Why would someone do that?

seven years pass...

picked up a copy of The Time Has Come recently, after the title track had come up in a couple of different conversations. never listened beyond that one before and idk, this album rules? like great garage-psych sound, great soul voices, great stoner jam energy. their "Midnight Hour" just locks into an endless repetition of these "gonna wait" backing vocals and it's reeeeeeally cool.

i looked up their story on wiki and allmusic and it's also awesome! four brothers from mississippi, gospel singers, end up in LA, step sideways into the folkie scene, then have their own "going electric" moment straight into psych rock... rad.
