This from the Too Pure website - http://www.toopure.com/

MCLUSKY
Last hurrah for mclusky

mclusky are dead. Having somehow managed to last three albums together (they did lose a drummer en route mind) and perform countless gigs around the world before their almost inevitable implosion a year ago, we have some good news for those still mourning their death. mcluskyism, a lasting testament to one of the most under-rated UK bands of recent years, is being released as both a single CD with all the hits and also a very special limited edition and rather comprehensive 3CD retrospective of A-sides, B-sides and C-sides (rarities and live versions). Both releases are available from February 27. A suitable way to end to their story, yes, but it hurts that there won't be a tour to coincide.

Cracks (Crackity), Monday, 30 January 2006 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

I believe it's the same price as the similar Stereolab one on the same label, which was £14.99 in the UK.

It's strictly a 'fans only' affair, really, but the unreleased stuff has some gems in and the live shit is well recorded and funny

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 30 January 2006 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

"Friends Stoning Friends" (b-side version)

just because i really like it

a.b. (alanbanana), Monday, 30 January 2006 23:13 (nineteen years ago)

Can't wait for this.

Harrison Barr (Petar), Monday, 30 January 2006 23:41 (nineteen years ago)

fuck yes! GOD, i loved mclusky. "best band in britain, and i'll fight anyone who says differently", as i wrote what feels like yesterday but was probably [counts on fingers] early 2003. or late 2002. or something.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 30 January 2006 23:48 (nineteen years ago)

i'm still upset they disbanded. Hot Snakes too!

pinder (pinder), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 00:04 (nineteen years ago)

Christ almighty, that was a great band...

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

Wow. I got a random promo from them (the one with Lightsaber Cocksucking Blues), wrote a glowing review (despite the fact that they weren't playing within a 1000 miles) and then I never heard another thing from them.

js (honestengine), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 00:22 (nineteen years ago)

I will always regret skipping their show in support of the last album because I was convinced that they'd be back before too long.

This is a pretty amazing set! I can't wait to get a copy.

I realize that they were doing the singles in chronological order on the a-sides disc, but wouldn't it just sound better if "She Will Only Bring You Happiness" is the last song instead of "MSG"?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 00:29 (nineteen years ago)

js, you're in for quite a treat with this set.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 00:31 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, I'm just marvelling at that tracklisting. The only essential McLusky song missing is "Rod's On Crutches."

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 00:36 (nineteen years ago)

"The World Loves Us And Is Our Bitch" should've been on there.

cdwill, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 01:08 (nineteen years ago)

also, was "Fuck This Band" too obvious a title for the boxset?

pinder (pinder), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 01:10 (nineteen years ago)

So... What's happened to 'em then? Other bands? It was such good stuff...

js (honestengine), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 01:33 (nineteen years ago)

Shooting At Unarmed Men is the guitarist's new band

petra, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 01:37 (nineteen years ago)

drooooooooool

ZR (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 01:39 (nineteen years ago)

The singer/guitarist and the drummer are still together, and the bassist started a new band.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 01:44 (nineteen years ago)

The Shooting at Unarmed Men EP is pretty fun. I like "No One Can Waltz" a bunch especially.

Oh, man am I excited for this box set tho.

Maciej Kasperowicz (Maciej), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

The Mclusky b-sides are mostly fucking awesome. Especially the late-era ones.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 04:23 (nineteen years ago)

this isn't a OMD thread .poo!

retrokid, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 05:44 (nineteen years ago)

Shooting At Unarmed Men is disbanding in a few months and Jon is moving to Australia and starting it again w/ new people. The other two's new band should be ready to play shows by then but nothing has been arranged yet

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 10:08 (nineteen years ago)

this isn't a OMD thread

mcluskEy ;)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

good to see memories aren't short on this band!!
i, too, wished i could've witness the fury and spittle they unleashed.
my pals all went to Columbus, OH (the closest gig to PGH) to see em and said it was an event to remember! Falco up on the drummer's shoulders playing gtr. while the bassist flailed about! THAT's a sight!
then, when they talk to em, apparently they're accents' are pretty thick and made conversation a lil hard, but when they asked them to come play PGH, they remarked 'Pittsburgh?? where the fook's that?!'.
point taken, but DAMNIT!!!
now, i go around and pray that there's ANY footage of them out there, and find none...
woe is i.

eedd, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

I saw them three times. Sorry to be smug, but hey. The last time was a couple of months before they split (and a few days after the live tracks on the boxset were recorded) and they DESTROYED in a sweaty little basement venue in Manchester. I got a setlist signed by Jack and then he took it into the dressing room for the other two to sign. Christ they were great.

Cracks (Crackity), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

I saw them in Montreal opening for the goddamn Libertines, who everyone was so excited about, and the 'lusky wiped the floor with them. Awesome.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

saw 'em twice (after do dallas and the last one) both times kicked the proverbial arse. MUST BUY BOX NOW.

ZR (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

damn, you cracks+Simon H+ZR!!!!

and damn me for not seein em...

anyone heard Shooting @ Unarmed Men yet?

eedd, Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

i saw them twice: once at tut's in glasgow, and once at ATP. they were ferociously brilliant both times. awe-inspiring, really.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

SAUM's mini-album is ok, but not much more than that. I believe Jon Chapple (Mclusky bassist) plays guitar for them as opposed to bass.

Cracks (Crackity), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

I was all set to see McLusky until they cancelled their show and opened for the sold-out Libertines show instead.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

Twice. Once at ATP and supporting Shellac at what must have been (unless there was another low-key one) their last show. Awesome.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 23:43 (nineteen years ago)

good band. 80% from the lyrics tho.

was at the ULU gig the live tracks on this thing are from. funny gig. a lot of vitriol thrown at a few (idiot) crowd members, which, while somewhat affectionate in an odd way, beautifully showcased the bitterness of the band.

papal rape, Thursday, 2 February 2006 01:13 (nineteen years ago)

I think the lyrics are great, but not half as great as the singing of the lyrics.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 2 February 2006 02:34 (nineteen years ago)

For example, "born to hang and proud of it" is not an intrinsically good line, but he sang it and made it sound deadly.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 2 February 2006 02:38 (nineteen years ago)

As I was with aldo at both those gigs I can cheerily say OTM, aldo.

I am pretty sure that the Shellac date was their last gig - the tour in November 2004 was their last tour of the year, with the Shellac date added at the end (unless anyknows better...)

Does anyone know how many of the 3 cd sets will be produced? I haven't found anywhere doing pre-release orders yet, so I want to make sure there is enough to go round!

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Thursday, 2 February 2006 08:03 (nineteen years ago)

The ATP set was amazing. I'd only heard a handful of songs before going and didn't have high hopes but within 10 minutes I was shouting "FUCKING HELL HOW GOOD ARE THESE?!" - though of course no-one could hear me.

(You going to ATP this year grimly? You can join the annual FAP that never happens)

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 2 February 2006 11:13 (nineteen years ago)

So were you all you guys at ATP standing at the back and nodding your heads or what? IIRC there were only about three of us jumping around at the front.

ledge (ledge), Thursday, 2 February 2006 12:02 (nineteen years ago)

Yes. We are the Churchill Dogs of Mclusky.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 2 February 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yes.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 2 February 2006 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I'll probably be standing at the back for Lightning Bolt this year.

ledge (ledge), Thursday, 2 February 2006 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

You'll get in the band's way.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 2 February 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

Aye, that's where their 'stage' was last time. I hope they play the crazy golf course this year.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 2 February 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

seriously, tho, is there ANY footage of these guys live?
i've seen none...just the 2 videos that were on too pure. and those were 'videos' not live stuff...

matth claimed that the 1st single (before they were Mclusky, something with a racecar on the front) isn't even Mclusky! so to that special person that outbid me on ebay, thanks!
glad i didn't drop the 25$ on it...

heh, my buddy's been tracking down all the singles and whatnot now for years, and i told him about this, and he about had a coronary!
i told him 'at least you have the art'.
he didn't buy it...

eedde, Thursday, 2 February 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

They were called Best at the time of the first single, which didn't feature Jon and was released against their wishes in a manner I forget. So they've effectively disowned it

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 2 February 2006 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

Wow. McLusky is clearly the new Pixies, i.e. the amazing band that too few people saw. I don't know if anyone from the alt-indie quite captures McLusky's air of "Wow, now that they're gone why didn't I realize that they were always an essential band?" etc.

pinder: thanks for that "Fuck this Band" line, genius. Why isn't it in the collection? I really like that song.

Martin Schneider (priceyeah), Thursday, 16 February 2006 08:39 (nineteen years ago)

So were you all you guys at ATP standing at the back and nodding your heads or what?

i was standing in front of one of those big air machine things. "jumping about" would have been beyond me by that point.

that said, i bounced like a fucker when i saw them at tut's.

and gerry, no, i'm having a year off this year ;)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 16 February 2006 09:22 (nineteen years ago)

i think the general idea of the 3cd 'mcluskyism' is that if you have all the albums and the 3cd, youve got the best of the group which is why it avoids the album tracks in favour of a straight forward a,b,c-sides set.

however i'd respectfully disagree, there is plenty of material floating around on the internet that the band themselves have released that is also very worthy if youre not satisfied after owning all of the above albums. especially some of the peel and bbc sessions, which were apparently meant to go onto mcluskyism, but were far too expensive to license.

mark h (mark h), Thursday, 16 February 2006 09:47 (nineteen years ago)

'Pittsburgh?? where the fook's that?!'

dude ppl from cardiff don't say "fook"!

anyway, AWESOME band, took me too long to see them but once i did i had to go another nine or ten times and it never EVER got boring, leaping around to them in a field at truck, taking my mum and dad to see them (heheheh they were quite into it by the end) at the buffalo bar, sweet mayhem at the garage. must get boxset. also shooting at unarmed men march 1st pleasure unit, oh yes.

That Amazon listing is only £8.99. Bargain.

Thank you very much, Mr Amazon.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 16 February 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

I've come to realize that "Blue City Rocks", "Another Rock Song", "Four Letters" and "Evil Frankie" are not in this boxset... I think they're from a 1999 demo tape and all I got is shit mp3 bootlegs of those songs... Any word on future releases beyond this boxset (boy, I'm greedy)?

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Thursday, 23 February 2006 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

Huh. Just realised that this CD i was given to review is but disc A from this set. wtf?

sean gramophone (Sean M), Thursday, 23 February 2006 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

"'Pittsburgh?? where the fook's that?!'
dude ppl from cardiff don't say "fook"!"

paraphrasing there, pally. and tryin to relate the common-language barrier....

big ups on that footage!!!

eedd, Thursday, 23 February 2006 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

Saw them twice, the first time was phenomenal, helped by free entry and I got to drink all their vodka in the band room. Was confined to bed for the next two days. Second time was average, they'd been going too hard and hadn't been looking after themselves.

especially some of the peel and bbc sessions, which were apparently meant to go onto mcluskyism, but were far too expensive to license.

-- mark h (goldsound...), February 16th, 2006 8:47 PM.

Yeah. 'Date Celebrities Or Die' is my favourite song. Apparently there's some unresolved tension between the BBC and them.

Huh. Just realised that this CD i was given to review is but disc A from this set. wtf?

-- sean gramophone (sea...), February 24th, 2006 8:12 AM. (later)

I thought the 3CD version is a limited edition affair, while the one CD version (which I'm guessing you have) is the general 'best of' dealy.

S- (sgh), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:09 (nineteen years ago)

Which is a great shame, considering it's only half an hour long. Just the singles and Without MSG I Am Nothing, which would have been the next single had they not broken up.

This got 8/10 in this week's NME by the way. Predictably, they hammer the Pixies references (good one for teenage readership though tol be fair) and bemoan the lack of recognition they got at the time. Well NME, if you'd deigned to give them more coverage than that one 'single of the week' for their (as it turned out) last ever single, they might still be around!

Cracks (Crackity), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:23 (nineteen years ago)

As that was absolutely nothing to do with them splitting up, it's unlikely

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:31 (nineteen years ago)

Incidently, has anyone else heard Andy's new band 'Jarcrew'? A friend played me their CD, I wasn't blown away.

S- (sgh), Friday, 24 February 2006 02:22 (nineteen years ago)

Jarcrew aren't anyone's new band, they've split up. Two members from the band are in Andy and Jack's new band, who sound good but are getting their shit together very... very... slowly
