Artists with glass walls : c/d?

Prompted by the Pavement thread:

Are bands whose internal workings are clear more interesting than the bands who prefer hide them? Or vice versa?

Meaning, are you more captured by artists that's more open about their songwriting process, their inter-band soap operas, etc.? Or by artists who are obviously deceptive, or are very quiet about such things?

(For the sake of argument, the Residents don't figure here.. as secrecy's their modus operandi)

It made good copy, but I presume the band would have continued on regardless. The NME would still call them 'characters.'
