I seem to recall it having a Henley "Just The Way It Is" kind of piano walk to it and a girl in the video riding on the back of a truck with one (a piano, that is). Really bothers me I can't figure this out. Her name is maybe Michelle something.

Michelle Branch?

Also, Just The Way It Is was Bruce Hornsby not Don Henley

definitely Carlton

I associate this song inextricably with watching 16 screens of hardcore porn in the Erotic Museum in Copenhagen, as there was a TV playing MTV on top of those screens with VC blurting.

i kept getting Branch and Carlton mixed up for months. Where are they now?

I love this song. And "White Houses".

Branch had a baby. No idea about Carlton -- there was a flop second album and a cameo with Counting Crows, but we've probably seen the last of her as well.

Mitya (mitya), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

She got to no.45 in Indonesia last year. Is that good? Do you need to sell a lot of records to get to no.45?

I feel kind of sorry for these types of artiste - the media is all over them for a couple of weeks and then the next singer/songwrite turns up and it's all over.

Having said that she must have done alright out of her paltinum selling album. And I think shes on MTV cribs tonight - hey that's a strange coincidence...

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

That's "platinum" obviously...

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

sold in paltrinumbers?

Jesus, how could I blow the Henley/Hornsby. That was embarrassing. I should have a toe cut off or something. But thanks. I was definitely thinking Michelle Branch but it wasn't fitting, though I can't remember having heard her music. Carlton it is. And that's indeed the video.

michelle branch has a pretty great voice, and that song she did with santana, "the game of love," which sounded exactly like a style council song, was really nice, and it wasn't all that long ago. if you think it's the last we'll see of her, you're wrong.

didn't vanessa carlton go out with stephan jenkins, and is he the male winona ryder, sort of?

"I feel kind of sorry for these types of artiste - the media is all over them for a couple of weeks and then the next singer/songwrite turns up and it's all over."

It's almost like *gasp* they're totally interchangable.

js (honestengine), Thursday, 2 February 2006 05:24 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, you're totally right - they are but still...if I was in their position...ah crap I don't know what I think anymore. I guess "feel sorry" was the wrong phrase, I should have said - "I wonder how they feel when the media...blahblahblah"

Anyway, like I say her pad looked nice on MTV cribs (i hope she bought it outright) so she probably feels pretty good.

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Thursday, 2 February 2006 09:37 (nineteen years ago)

"I wonder how they feel when the media...blahblahblah"

Already substantially wealthier thean they would otherwise have been and probably with a secure career (albeit at a substantially reduced level of income) on the club circuit for as long as they want one, maybe?

Fuck that Vanessa is on her game right now, she's still at it. I subscribe to her blog even. Nice girl.

I'm not really thinking so much about the money. More in terms of what it does for your creative process. I guess she wrote that one track and anyone would have guessed that (with the right advertsing, etc.) it would have been at least a moderate hit, but then presumably, she wrote a load of other stuff she thought was shithot and...No. 45 in Indonesia (which as i say might still be quite a good thing for all I know).

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Thursday, 2 February 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

What is Vanessa's blog?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 2 February 2006 23:13 (nineteen years ago)

michelle branch had a big public falling out with her record company who made her to work on the latest santana record as a condition of releasing a record she did with someone else under a different name; she posted a screed about it on her website at some point. then I think she quit music for the time being anyway.
