"Artist: Acid Casuals

Debut album: Omni

Label: Placid Casual Cat no.: PLC13CD

Release date: 30th January

Format: CD + downloadable from iTunes, napster, karmadownload.

The music, fashion and art collective Acid Casuals release their inaugural album on JANUARY 30th, 2006. In a move typically ad hoc, Acid Casuals follow their sometime back Novamute 12” release with a magical record, deservedly titled Omni, on Placid Casual.

The production of a record of this calibre is even more impressive given the vast variety of Acid Casuals’ other creative projects. Their travels to Tokyo were integral to the launch of their fashion label, New York saw them leap into video production and all inspired their art space café bar, Capsule.

“Omni came about from a period of mental, physical and emotional exhaustion around Christmas 2004. Jazz Vice came up with an album title ‘too tired to yawn like man’ and after 3 weeks we woke up in Pleasure Foxx studios and created what is now a 360* sonic journey.” Says AC writer and producer Kev Tame.

Cian Ciaran, the other half of the AC writing and producing team adds “Most of these tracks have been accumulating for years on sequencers, tape machines and computers. Finally we managed to stay in the same room for more than a week and put together something resembling a debut album (whatever that is) But don’t expect this to be a sign of things to come, god knows what’s going to be next, its all a reaction to emotions and how we’re getting on on the golf course.”

Following on from the jacking twelve for Novamute and an early mix of Wa Da Da (championed by Radio 1’s Rob da Bank and Huw Stevens) on Secret Agent Records these ten tracks are a sort of slowed-down acid burner of the more melodic kind. Beats fall forward and behind the aural line. Rolling and languorously rocking, the wave is always swelling, expanding to fill the musical canvas and superimposing a layered tempo of resistance and release.

“Listen to the layers, then turn it up and listen again, and again…” Cian says of the album “…we don’t care cos it works and is but the language of some musical fairy genii”

Acid Casuals have always operated an open door policy, welcoming an eclectic range of contributing musicians and Omni is no exception. But says Kev, it sometimes works the other way, “We invited GLC to contribute to the phat beat bolshevic ‘Long Time No See’ but in an ironic twist ended up remixing their single ‘Your Missus is a Nutter’.”

Omni is an album that has the potential to culturally impact a generation. “Its essential that what we do is the best that we can do at that time, once it’s done and out, we’re ready to go again on the next Acid Casuals project.”

Does anyone have this? I'd love to hear it.

Someone YSI'd the "Bowl Me Over" EP a month or so ago and it was excellent. Really diverse and weird. Then again, I am the only asshole ever who likes "Love Kraft" the best of all SFA albums.

Very interested in hearing this, the three songs that were posted here last year were quite good. Looking for it now...

I hear it's on OINK.

anyone?

enjoy bell woods, Thursday, 2 February 2006 07:29 (nineteen years ago)

Something came up where I been gone until now. I found it on s1sk but the bitrate is at 128 and in queue. The queue is small so unless they go off line I should have it in a few hours.

BeeOK (boo radley), Thursday, 2 February 2006 08:30 (nineteen years ago)

I have it now, still interested?

i enjoyed ACID CASUALS a lot,
in a different way I enjoyed a lot LOVE KRAFT, not the best SFA album but a TOP ALBUM.

hub, Thursday, 2 February 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

Nah, it's okay. I ordered it from Amazon a few days ago, so it should be here sometime soon.

I finally got it. It seems like something a lot of people on the board would really like if it weren't automatically associated with SFA.

?

There are a lot of SFA fans on this board so I'm unsure what you mean.

BeeOK (boo radley), Friday, 3 February 2006 02:09 (nineteen years ago)

Eh, forget it. What do you think of it? I really like "Long Time No See." It gets pretty intense. I hear Dafydd did the drumming for that track.

enjoy bell woods, Friday, 3 February 2006 02:23 (nineteen years ago)

Yes this is pretty good and they seemed to name themselves appropriately. The thing is I just can't get into mainly instrumental bands. So no matter how good Mogwai or M83 are they don't grab my attention like bands with a singer somehow do. That being said I do like this and will put in on quite a few times in the next couple of weeks. I do think my favorite three songs are the one you mentioned, "Wa Da Da" and because of the vocals "Bowl Me Over."

This is really, really good. I think if this had been an Ellen Allien album, ILM would've been all over it.

It's too bad this isn't getting much attention. This whole album is almost placid, as its label would suggest.

this is a guy from super furry animals. it's a really good album

BEST ALBUM OF 2006

I would concur.

Krakken is beautiful.

i'm in the US, is this out here yet? where can i buy it online?

shaky, Friday, 10 February 2006 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

I order it off Amazon.co.uk. I wouldn't suggest purchasing it unless you really want to support SFA's label. The packaging is pretty spartan.

enjoy bell woods, Saturday, 11 February 2006 00:04 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...
I've given this about four listens now and it's really come alive for me. I'm kind of surprised it wasn't discussed more last year, but I guess not too many people have really heard it have they?

Omni?

i miss that magazine

It seems like something a lot of people on the board would really like if it weren't automatically associated with SFA.

The natural audience for a record like this would seem to consist of (a) people who already pride themselves on not listening to guitar music and (b) people who want to listen to music that people who pride themselves on not listening to guitar music like. Alas, the SFA connection is likely a turnoff for both of those cohorts -- to paraphrase Homer, you don't win cred with '90s bands' electronic side projects.

It's a great record, though, so I hope I'm just being overly cynical and people really do find this album and embrace it.

marc h., Monday, 12 March 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

It's a good album, though I'm not sure it's quite excellent. I can't expect too much out of Cian since it seems like SFA is working on a new album the second they release a new one.

I think Omni is just as good as that one Isolee album, but I don't think Placid Casual (the label) or Cian really have high expectations for a project that's been around since SFA formed.

Cian is capable of some amazing sounds. I hope he and SFA can explore that aspect further on future releases.

enjoy bell woods, Monday, 12 March 2007 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I'm an SFA fan so I don't fit either of those cohorts, but I wasn't in a huge rush to listen to it because "electronic side projects" don't seem like the best investment of time full stop. But this is pretty good. There are several tracks where the Super Furry connection is apparent, but a few, like Krakken, where you would never know. Those latter few are actually my favorites.

xpost

Billy Pilgrim, Monday, 12 March 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

I just put on Krakken to test out my assertion and those drums and keys are totally SFA-sounding. Never mind, but I still like it.

Billy Pilgrim, Monday, 12 March 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

"Bowl Me Over" was a great single, perhaps better than the last couple SFA singles. There's one track on the album that begins with the same music as a track on Mwng.I believe this was the fabled SFA techno album that never saw release.

enjoy bell woods, Monday, 12 March 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

My AMG review -- a nice little album, I should dig it out again.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 12 March 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

I really want to hear this, but for all the wrong reasons. :(
I thought that one single was garbage and the cynic in me doesn't believe a WORD of the claims made for this....

Um... YSI?

fandango, Monday, 12 March 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

except Ned's words, which make it sound nowhere even close to Isolee or Ellen Allien(wtf?)...

fandango, Monday, 12 March 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

The single is the only poppy track.

Billy, I think you've just explained the lack of buzz about this record much more succinctly than I did above! (hangs head)

marc h., Monday, 12 March 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

hey... thanks for that youtube link! :)

it does sound... exactly like I'd expect it to have, no offence intended, there seems to be a severe disconnect of sorts between the descriptions/praise coming from SFA fans and those from more (to me) trustworthy, objective sources. They're all saying it's good mind you! but I'll stick with my instincts here (sorry)...

fandango, Monday, 12 March 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

Great album indeed. Nice and twisted. Was totally unaware as to the SFA connection (apart from the obvious title)!

Just got The Aliens album as well, "Astronomy For Dogs" (former beta Band member's new release). Haven't listened to it yet, but looking forward to it.

Rikard Fortworth, Monday, 12 March 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

I put another song from this album up this morning if you feel like having a listen.

Billy Pilgrim, Friday, 16 March 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)
