shush i would like to intorduce you to the word "these"

I don't know if I'm just getting too restless with the live shows, or what..
Deerhoof, I will agree, played an excellent set on the Saturday I saw them--watching them as musicians was fantastic--but this was after three-ish opening acts. "ish" including the Colburn films, which were interesting in their own right. it was a good idea to have something to hold your attention between the changeups, but standing and attempting to bear bombast of flashing image after flashing image was..dizzying.
the whole ordeal became this sort of nonstop and gruelling but still great experience.
Yeah, so deerhoof, good, but appearing only after what seemed to be forever = seems not as good.

Other bands...hardly to the sold out house of the hoof show, but I have to say Dungen. Not only great with the arrangements, but. and then guitarist and singer embracing at the end.. just great all around. "we shall continue the abuse of the electric guitar.."

roffletastic

My friend and I were trying to decide if there were a better drummer in indie rock than Greg Saunier (sp?) right now. I dunno, both in terms of technical ability and what he brings to the band, I'm not sure there is anyone better. And I'm gonna have to agree that they might be the best live band right now too.

kurt dahle from the "new porns" is great too, but not as good as "deerhoof"'s greg saunier.

for your consideration

Honestly people...

It's one thing to like their songless wall of sound and jagged touch and go rip off syncopated riffs. That's taste.

But other than a little movement from the other members - they do NOTHING onstage. The singer just stares at her hands and yelps. Zero presence. Sure she's cute, female and Asian, but so are Gito Gito Hustler and they rock.

Uncle Tom (Uncle Tom), Friday, 3 February 2006 07:04 (nineteen years ago)

not true! she has many wonderful hand movements that accompany the lyrics, like deerhoof sign language. seriously though, I think I see what you are saying but I see her more as a foil for the rest of the band. I think that is one of the things that make them extraordinary.

goodbyesoberday (goodbyesoberday), Friday, 3 February 2006 09:17 (nineteen years ago)

he is pretty great but the dude from hella made me want to do sit-ups right there on the floor.

geoff (gcannon), Friday, 3 February 2006 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

No kidding. I want to see the Hella guy and Deerhoof guy do a Gene Krupa/Buddy Rich drum off.

_+, Friday, 3 February 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

how can a front person be a foil for the other members? and how are you supposed to see her "sign" language when she's under 5 feet tall and plays clubs with low stages?

Come to one of our shows, we're doing 30 this spring. If you honestly think Deerhoof put on a better live performance, I'll eat my hat.

Uncle Tom (Uncle Tom), Friday, 3 February 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

I agree, Satomi brings the mythos. She's got a great thing going on. Anyway, Uncle Tom, I don't think "best" = most histrionic, or showiest or whatever. They seem too consumed by their playing (which is ferocious) for any of that, which is good by me.

Also: "songless wall of sound"?? Wha—?

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Friday, 3 February 2006 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

"No kidding. I want to see the Hella guy and Deerhoof guy do a Gene Krupa/Buddy Rich drum off."

You can hear something like it. Its called Nervous Cop (also featuring pre-"Milk Eyed Mender" Joanna Newsom)and it sucks pretty bad.

goodbyesoberday (goodbyesoberday), Friday, 3 February 2006 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

well if you like hand staring, i guess that's mythic.

I guess some people think emo bands who turn their back on the auidience were mythic and mysterious too.
