TS: Green Mind vs. Nevermind

Green Mind, a better record, came out in February of 91, and Nevermind came out in September of 91 (just in time for the fall term). Green Mind has a little girl smoking a cigarette on the cover and Nevermind has a baby swimming for a dollar. Green Mind has better songs. Nevermind isn't bad, it's just why did that one get real real big and Green Mind didn't? "Smells Like Teen Spirit" sounds like "More Than a Feeling."

"More Than a Feeling" is better than anything on Green Mind.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 2 February 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

gee, which one will win on ilm: the acknowledged pop hallmark, or the indie rock album?

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Thursday, 2 February 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

green mind's an acknowledged pop hallmark?

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 2 February 2006 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

Green Mind is fucking great but c'mon.

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

Mark's right. You defeated your own argument with your last sentence.
Now, Nevermind vs. the first Boston record, there's a battle.
Plus, if J. Mascis looked half as good as Kurdt, maybe the girls at the mall would've given a shit.

Bill Gillim (Famous Cory), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

Nevermind is my favorite album of all time, so of course that. =-)

Harrison Barr (Petar), Thursday, 2 February 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

Green Mind was worse than the preceding DJ albums (and than its next too), so why should it have been their breakthrough?

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 2 February 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

yeah at the time initial reactions i can recall were: green mind = 'man, whatta disappointment' (i remember some dinosaur jr fans being REAL angry, it is their 'sellout' album after all), nevermind = 'alot better than bleach'. dinosaur jr fans trashing something cuz it revels in a classic rock cliche seems a bit off to me too.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 2 February 2006 22:10 (nineteen years ago)

I've yet to hear Green Mind, but from all that I have heard of it it's not even hailed as one of Dinosaur Jr.'s best. Who's gonna argue that Nevermind was'nt Nirvana's best? Some people, that's who, not a lot I imagine though. I just don't really understand the comparison besides the fact they were both released the same year.

TS: Nevermind vs In Utero

Si_C@rter, Friday, 3 February 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

I'd vote for "Where you been" the best Dinosaur album.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 3 February 2006 12:35 (nineteen years ago)

The 2nd half of Green Mind isn't very good.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 3 February 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

I only got Green Mind about a year ago. Only listened to it once. I never picked up on the "Jr." thing either...

Dave will do (dave225.3), Friday, 3 February 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

Nevermind wins against Green Mind, totally. Now, Nevermind against You're Living Over Me is a different matter.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 3 February 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

also, i don't see how either of these is more indie rock than the other, considering that they were both released by majors. (Nevermind, by the way, and i lurve me some Dino)

ZR (teenagequiet), Friday, 3 February 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

I read that as Dido for a second there.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 3 February 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

you've discovered my horrible secret!

ZR (teenagequiet), Friday, 3 February 2006 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

I like Green Mind over Bug or You're Living All Over Me, and way more than anything after it. It's a little samey but (I was just replaying certain tracks in my head and thinking dude, it's such a stoner record... hence the title) the template is so good I can't tire of it.

Nevermind hasn't matured with me the way Green Mind has. (Didn't like it as much when it came out either)

Aaron A, Friday, 3 February 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

Bandwagonesque was released in 1991, and won album of the year honors from those reliable tastemakers at SPIN.
We should not forget it.

fanclub member, Friday, 3 February 2006 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

I thought the Pixies "Trompe Le Monde" was a great 90's Rock record. Released the same year, no?

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 3 February 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, Trompe was '91, and it still smokes both of these....

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Friday, 3 February 2006 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

Now here's a TS:

o. nate (onate), Friday, 3 February 2006 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

"The Wagon" is the only good song on Green Mind. What a piece of shit record.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 3 February 2006 22:39 (nineteen years ago)

I used to have Green Thoughts on cassette, and I liked it pretty well. Haven't listened to it in about 15 years. My uncle once played golf with the dad of one of the band members.

I used to have Green Mind on CD, and I liked it pretty well. I do like "The Wagon", which I listened to not too long ago. So I guess I'd have to give it to Green Mind.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 3 February 2006 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, Trompe was '91, and it still smokes both of these....
-- Dr. Gene Scott (butiplayoneont...), February 3rd, 2006.

YEAH! It's good to have someone agree with you for once!!

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Saturday, 4 February 2006 03:22 (nineteen years ago)

yeah i think i might prefer trompe le monde to them both, too.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 4 February 2006 03:39 (nineteen years ago)

Green Mind vs. Birdbrain (Buffalo Tom)?

cracktivity1 (cracktivity1), Saturday, 4 February 2006 03:43 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, I don't mean to really get everybody off track, but, I can't help but feel total empathy ( a word first brought to my attention by none other than Mr. Kurt Cobain himself many years ago) with the people who felt Trompe Le Monde is a top album of that year. And actually, no matter how much Nevermind changed my life (I'm so sorry, but Green Mind isn't even in the running, yes of course I stated that I have'nt even heard it yet,but I still doubt it will make a dent with me, no offense, I do actually dig Dinosaur Jr.,although my tastes might go along more with the song "poledo") I can't help but think of Trompe Le Monde as a total definition of 90"s ROCK!!! Anybody care to agree/disagree?? I don't care, hate me, whatever, this is what I thrive on, what people dig, and the joy if people might actually dig what you dig.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Saturday, 4 February 2006 09:18 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, if "people might actually dig what I dig", sorry, I'm a retard...

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Saturday, 4 February 2006 09:22 (nineteen years ago)

If this is veering into Best of 91 territory--

Slint- Spiderland
My Bloody Valentine- Loveless
Massive Attack- Blue Lines
Talk Talk- Laughing Stock
A Tribe Called Quest- The Low End Theory

cracktivity1 (cracktivity1), Saturday, 4 February 2006 11:53 (nineteen years ago)

Nevermind for sure, dude. Nirvana seriously changed my life.

Harpal (harpal), Saturday, 4 February 2006 12:05 (nineteen years ago)

Nevermind

fizzcaraldo (Justin M), Saturday, 4 February 2006 12:13 (nineteen years ago)

oh fuck, i forgot...LOVELESS!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 4 February 2006 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

I was going to say, the answers on this thread so far have been incorrect.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 February 2006 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

I would second Slint's "Spiderland", but no, I want to know what's CORRECT.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Saturday, 4 February 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

six years pass...

Ignoring the absurd question in the thread title... there's lots of good shit on Green Mind besides "The Wagon." i'm kinda bummed by most of the reactions here.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 05:10 (thirteen years ago)

like.... "Green Mind" vs. "Sebadoh III" is obviously a more appropriate (and better) question.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 05:12 (thirteen years ago)

it's a wonderful album, the last dinosaur jr release i really loved. though it's been quite a while, i got a lot of use out of "the wagon", "flying cloud", "how'd you pin that one on me", "thumb" and "green mind" at the time. it can't hold a candle to nevermind, but i do prefer it to trompe le monde. it does tend a bit to the dreary dragginess of later dino jr releases, though. it sags absent the piss and fire that animated you're living all over me and bug.

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 05:23 (thirteen years ago)

"Green Mind" vs. "Sebadoh III" is obviously a more appropriate (and better) question.

probably. my answer is sebadoh iii. sorry, lou...

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 05:23 (thirteen years ago)

you mean sorry j?

billstevejim, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 05:25 (thirteen years ago)

puke + cry! i live for that look! thumb!
lotsa good stuff IMO

billstevejim, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 05:25 (thirteen years ago)

lol, duh, i mean sorry j! time and distance, these are wounds.

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 05:40 (thirteen years ago)

I remember hitching around on tours of the UK when Nevermind came out & it suddenly being the one record everybody wanted to play. Not sure how artificial that situation is but before that point you'd get played pretty obscure stuff by a lot of people who'd put you up. then everybopdy wanted to play Nevermind.
I say artificial & it could be that it was thought of as the icebreaker with somebody who was pretty much a stranger.

I think I prefer Dinosaur Jr with Lou Barlow. I can't think what's on Green Mind.

Stevolende, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 17:18 (thirteen years ago)

The 2nd half of Green Mind isn't very good.

yeah i don't get this at all. how'd you pin this one on me, water, thumb, title track are all great.
but the wagon > smells like teen spirit

mizzell, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 17:45 (thirteen years ago)

theyre both tremend but... i dunno, SLTS vs Wagon... this could have a different answer for me depending on the weather

billstevejim, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

i'd probably go for "the wagon" most days, but i'm not the biggest SLTS fan. there are lots of nevermind tracks i prefer to it. "freak scene", though, eats both of these for breakfast. there are few songs in the world i love more than "freak scene".
