3.guided by voices - 1999 - melbourne.

1. The Ex - 2004 - The Middle East, Boston

2. Fugazi - 1993 - Binghampton University, Binghampton, NY

3. Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins, and Pearl Jam - 1991 -
Landmark Theater, Syracuse, NY
(This one should probably be my favorite just for the fact that my friend fell
in love with the "hot chick bass player" in Pearl Jam. It was that floppy hat
that made Jeff Ament so irresistable.)

Famous Cory (Famous Cory), Friday, 3 February 2006 01:02 (nineteen years ago)

1. VHS or Beta at Casa de Popolos in Montreal, summer 2002
2. Black Crowes at St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit, summer 1996
3. Afghan Whigs at Clutch Cargo's in Pontiac, fall 1997(?)

I've seen hundreds of great shows, but each of these three had a little more energy than the rest and a better connection between the band and the audience, making them stand out in my mind.

webcrack (music=crack), Friday, 3 February 2006 02:59 (nineteen years ago)

Ask crazy questions, you get crazy answers. Three ? With all each of us has endured.. Here's my fave ...four of the eighties :

Talk Talk - Lausanne 1983 (was a kid, alone & away from home. Recorded it)
The Young Gods - Geneva 1986
Front 242 - Lausanne 1986
P.I.L - Paris 1987

I got to mention The Jesus Lizard @ CBGB's in NYC, early 90s : I also recorded that one so it might be a (fuller ?) version of their 1993 "Show" live release which I didn't even know existed until now, googling for their old tour schedules (tapes = rotting away in the attic by the hundreds).

blunt (blunt), Friday, 3 February 2006 03:56 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not sure of the dates or which shows exactly they were - but I think it looks something like:

Boredoms (a little before pop tatari)
Boredoms (a little after pop tatari)
Melvins (lysol era)

The Boredoms were so by far the best band I've ever seen - it's a little shocking that the melvins even crack the list. Funny, neither band is really representative of my taste.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Friday, 3 February 2006 04:17 (nineteen years ago)

1. Flaming Lips (1995)
2. the White Stripes (2002)
3. Black Eyes (2003)

top 3 fantasy shows:

1. the Rolling Stones (1965)
2. the Who (1965)
3. Dog Faced Hermans (1995)
3. Led Zeppelin (Playhouse Theatre, London, June 27-1969)

Brian Jones (Brian Jones), Friday, 3 February 2006 06:31 (nineteen years ago)

Gosh, this is really hard to do. Depending on one's mood you're inclined to remember shows that hit you one way vs. another.

Samhain and Maurice- saw this in 1986 (I think) and I couldn't have been a bigger Misfits/Samhain worshipper so it was heavy.

the Boredoms/Eyehategod/Brutal Truth show I saw (was it 96? earlier?) was awesomely rocking and hilarious. But so was the Yamatsuka Eye/Otomo Yoshihide voice and turntable duo . . . totally different experiences but really amazing.

Keiji Haino's opening set for Faust where he just played a tambourine was unexpected, and totally go for broke brave- on paper it sounds just pretentious and corny but in person it was raw and amazing.

Crash Worship at their best (like at the Haze Theatre show I saw with Sleep and Zeni Geva / K.K. Null also on the bill) were totally killer.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 3 February 2006 07:07 (nineteen years ago)

american music club, san francisco, 1991
rollercoaster tour (jesus mary chain, curve, spiritualized), whenever that was (90?)...mainly because of curve
cocteau twins, heaven or las vegas tour

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 3 February 2006 07:25 (nineteen years ago)

Rock: Iggy Pop in Detroit '87, Shonen Knife in Toronto '94, David Wilcox in Sarnia with a surprisingly exciting open-air show on a beautiful July 2002 night, grass underneath our legs and in our lungs.)

Jazz: Sun Ra Arkestra ('91), Crispell/Brotzmann/Drake ('92), Pharoah Sanders ('94, all in Toronto)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 3 February 2006 08:04 (nineteen years ago)

1. Tori Amos TIE SPAC in NY 99 and 05
2. Belle and Sebastian/Rasputina at Town Hall NYC 03 (2nd Day)
3. Bjork-Coney Island, NYC (1st Show)

dividingcanaan, Friday, 3 February 2006 08:27 (nineteen years ago)

In no particular order.

The Dambuilders, playing to a ridiculously jammed hometown house at TT The Bear's Place in Cambridge, MA (1996). Biggest adrenaline rush on record when they laid into a blistering "Smooth Control" at stun-volume as an encore.

Tricky's inaugural appearance in Boston (Maxinquaye tour) at the Paradise Rock Club, the air thick with smoke and Martina close enough to touch (1995). Saw him the next year with Jeru the Damaja at a completely joyless and baffling Avalon show. Never bothered to go again.

Laurie Anderson on her post-9/11 stop at Harvard with Peter Scherer and band. She played virtually all of Big Science, including a devastatingly relevant "O Superman." Met her for the first time after the show and babbled like a schoolgirl on crack.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Friday, 3 February 2006 09:09 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmm, I could think differently tomorrow or even in about five minutes but for now:

Fugazi - shit if I remember what year it was.
dEUS & Evil Superstars - again damned if I know what year
Painkiller at the North Sea Jazz festival (?) - ditto, can't remember the year

Yes, I'm senile.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 3 February 2006 09:38 (nineteen years ago)

Chronologically :

1.Sex Pistols/The Clash/Heartbreakers - Cleethorpes Winter Gardens December 1976. And so it begins for the 15 yr-old me.

2. Joy Division/Section 25 - Derby Ajanta Theatre - April 1980. The penultimate JD gig. They were by far the greatest live band I've seen, this gig gets the vote simply because they played Isolation.

3. New Order - Reading University May 1981. Their first encore, with Barney ranting 'fucking students' over a terrifying jam/thrash with Section 25.

4. Howard Devoto/SPK/The Smiths - about half way through opener 'You've Got Everything Now' I realized that we may have an interesting proposition on our hands here.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Friday, 3 February 2006 09:44 (nineteen years ago)

The last one was Aug 1983.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:02 (nineteen years ago)

Mercury Rev / Flaming Lips - Norwich UEA 1999 - touring Deserters Songs/The Soft Bulletin Mercury Rev were very, very good, but my first encounter with the Flaming Lips amazed me.

All Tomorrow's Parties - Camber Sands 2002, Weekend 2. Are festivals allowed? If I have to, I could narrow it down to the main stage on Saturday with The New Year / Nina Nastasia / Low / Bonnie 'Prince' Billy. The highlight of an awe inspiring weekend.

Girls Against Boys / Brainiac / Ligament - Norwich Arts Centre 1996. Bulletproof Cupid sent shivers down my spine and made my hair stand on end. Braniac were inspired and I got the singer (Tim Taylor?) to sign the 7" I bought. I wish he wasn't dead.

Ben Dot (1977), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:57 (nineteen years ago)

Melt-Banana - Hull Adelphi about 3 months ago
Van der Graaf Generator - Liverpool, May? 2005
Credit to the Nation - Room, Hull, sometime in the early 90s

StanM (StanM), Friday, 3 February 2006 12:05 (nineteen years ago)

Flaming Lips - Montreal, 2003 (metropolis).
(one of the gig reviews i'm most happy about.)
The Lips startled me so much. I was not really a fan of them, but in person wow-boom-gosh, the breath was sucked out of my lungs.

The Arcade Fire - Montreal, 2003 (EP release @ casa)
i don't know if this was the best, but there were string players in the back and then someone shoved his drum-kit and a viola got stepped on and the lead singer's chasing the drummer out the back door, door clanging, us all gasping as we come down from those heights and see the stage, wonder what next.

Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Centre Orchestra - Ottawa, 2001 (jazz fest)
They played Duke Ellington songs and I was there, right at the lip of the stage, watching the sax players murmur dirty insults to each other and then skronk saxophones in friendly duels. it was so fun, there, under the stars. such a community of us, everything playful and eye-contact, then sudden swoops of melody and feeling. we stamped our feet, slapped monitors, hooted - just hooted.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Friday, 3 February 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

Arcade Fire (Thanksgiving Night 2004--Logan Square Auditorium, Chicago)

Radiohead (October 4, 2003--Palm Beach, Florida)

I don't even like him that much, but...

Jonah Matranga. We booked him to play at our southern, private college (600 students) Valentine's Day night. Turns out that he was getting over a split from his fiance or something, had to fly to B.F.E. Arkansas alone to play a show to 20 people, half of whom came hours to see him. If intimacy is your thing, then...y'know.

Tarpley (Tarpley), Friday, 3 February 2006 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

maybe - best bills and/or best recollection of bands performing well + perfect level of alchohol.
Pere Ubu/John Cale, Cleveland - ~ 1987 I think
REM/Minutemen, Columbus - ~ Fables/55
Go-Betweens, Chicago - 1989
--
substitutes -
Replacements, Cincinnati - 1986
Yo La Tengo, Cleveland - 2001(?)

Dave will do (dave225.3), Friday, 3 February 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

Led Zeppelin - Knebworth 1979 - Maybe it was the too much beer for my slight 15 yr. old frame (i.e. 2 cans) and maybe it was because it was the first gig I'd been to but it has left a permanant impression and slight hearing loss.

The Smiths - Tower Ballroom, Birmingham 1984 - last gig on their first major tour. And a beautiful woman who I had once briefly chatted with on a train came up and talked to me. What could be more perfect?

New Order - Loughborough University 1986 - The greatest version of Perfect Kiss of all time - on the bootleg you can hear my mate shout "Fucking brilliant" and it was.

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Friday, 3 February 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

Ned Rifle wins.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 3 February 2006 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

Three good ones I can remember:

Flaming Lips - Slim's, San Francisco - 1996. Last tour with Ronald, such a great show.

DJ Shadow/Jurassic 5/Latyryx - Justice League, San Francisco 1997. J5 didn't have a record out yet. DJ Shadow opened with a DJ set then played with Latyryx, who headlined.

Kraftwerk - 9:30 Club, D.C. 2005. Covered this one for Pitchfork.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 3 February 2006 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

I think we've done this one, but:

God Is My Co-Pilot/The Honkies at some little upstairs bar in London, 1993
The Frogs, CBGB, 1992--rock glory!
Cordelia's Dad at my friend Kardyhm's house, 1997--this was actually my "retirement party"

Runners-up: the Pale Orchestra at the Knitting Factory, 1997; Masada at the 14th St. Y (I think), 2000; David Thomas & Two Pale Boys at Lola's, 2005; Dog Faced Hermans at CB's Gallery, 1994; Spaceheads at the Happy Birthday Hideout, 1997; Uncle Wiggly at Brownies, 1995; The Clean at Maxwell's, 2001; Melt-Banana at the Knitting Factory, 2003; Dustdevils at Toxic Shock, 1990; Bikini Kill at Wetlands, 1992; Sebadoh at CBGB, 1992; Jon Spencer Blues Explosion at Camber Sands, 1999...

Consistent pattern: the presence of Andy Diagram. Hmm.

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 3 February 2006 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

Oh God, and how could I forget BIRDYAK! Somewhere in London, 1998, I think.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Sunday, 12 March 2006 22:20 (nineteen years ago)

Jane's Addiction - Orpheum, Boston, 1990. Four skilled players in sync with each other. Powerful, musical, spiritual. You couldn't want more from a rock band.

Velvet Underground / Luna - Palac Kultury, Prague, 1993. I had no idea who Luna were and I loved their set like no other unknown band I've seen. And the VU, what needs to be said?

Stereolab - Central Park Summerstage, New York, 1995. A similar experience in a lot of ways. I think I just heard this amazing sound coming from inside the compound and wandered in to see Tim and Mary churning away at their guitars and Laetitia warbling on top. Love at first sound.

Mitya (mitya), Sunday, 12 March 2006 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

1. The Ex at the Middle East, Boston September 2004. Glad this is someone else's favorite too. I've never seen such frantic (positive) energy from a crowd at any other show in my life. Especially amazing since Boston is a chilly crowd. There's a short video on the Ex's website from this standout performance.

2. Sonic Youth/The Amps/Bikini Kill at the Hollywood Palladium, right around Washing Machine time. BK sucked, unsurprisingly, but the Amps and SY were both wonderful--best show I saw from ages 14-21.

3. This Ain't No Picnic 2, July 2002 (?)
I didn't love most of the bands at the show, but the vibe was magical and Beck's mostly acoustic performance of "mutations" and "one foot in the grave" material was a treat beyond all treats, one of the finest performances I've witnessed.

Runners-up: Animal Collective at Barnard College or a few months later at Other Music; Nick Lowe at the Paradise in Boston last year (what a swell guy!)The Sea and Cake at the Alligator Lounge, Santa Monica CA (1997?), Fugazi in Boston 2003 (?), Hum at the Koo's Cafe in Long Beach CA, Lightning Bolt at the Smell right around Ride The Skies era...and my first concert, U2/Public Enemy/The Sugarcubes at Dodger Stadium October 1992. It's somewhat embarassing now, but the Sunny Day Real Estate concert at the Palace in L.A. right after they got back together was pretty amazing for an 18 y.o. me.

1. DEVO at Radio City Music Hall, Halloween 1981 - the New Traditionalists tour - Your first ever concert experience is always special -- that whole "Oh My God, THEY'RE REALLY HERE! THAT'S REALLY THEM!" sensation cannot be duplicated. Great show, too.

2. Circle Jerks, D.O.A., Redd Kross at The Ritz (11th St.) 1985 or so - I was a massive fan of the Circle Jerks at the time, so seeing them in the flesh (just prior to Wonderful) was a huge deal for me. Also, Redd Kross were just amazing -- to a see of leather-clad punks, skinheads, mohicans and hardcore kids, they came out all glammed out and played a hair metal rendition "Jesus Christ Superstar" and drowned out the punk purists hostility. It was brilliant.

3. Fishbone, The Toasters, Murphy's Law at the Ritz - December `85. The Ritz was just a great space at the time, and the energy for all three bands was palpable. Jimmy Gestapo of Murphy's Law vaulted from stage to bar and stomped the full beer I'd just paid handsomely for (I didn't mind). I saw the Dead Boys there a night or two later for one of their then-annual Christmas reunion shows. Great time.

4. Killing Joke at the Cat Club, July 1989 - First time ever seeing them. Stood next to Johnny Feedback (drummer of Kraut), Handsome Dick Manitoba of the Dictators and Joey (!!!) Ramone. Godlike experience.

High on Fire, 2006.
Mission of Burma's like fourth reunion show, 2002 i think.
TV on the Radio, 2004. It was past curfew in Cambridge, MA so the club cut the power. The band led everyone in an a cappella version of "Ambulance" to close the show. What a beautiful moment.

Sean Braudis (Sean Braudis), Monday, 13 March 2006 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

daft punk, astoria, london, 1997 (if you've heard the Alive CD you'll have an idea)
chemical brothers, homelands, winchester, 1999 (hearing tracks from 'Surrender' for the first time in a huge tent full of people in a jumping frenzy)
radiohead, earls court, london, 2003 (odd choice cos of stadium-like venue perhaps but everything really was in it's right place - except me, as far back as could be, yet somehow still awed [/cif])

oh wow did I forget to blarp about it? omg. yeah I was on the verge of tears from the first song and by the time they got to Love rein O'er Me I was literally bawling. I was really impressed with how they incorporated the Moony and Ox footage into the show too, it was great.

Shit, what an impossible question. Two that affected me on massive levels though were:

surprising entry KP.

no doubt you know that they are setting out on a greatest hits tour.

i saw them back in 2005 and they were ace.

how have things changed since those glory years ?

mark e, Thursday, 9 May 2013 23:38 (twelve years ago)

I know there a lot of people who only rate the first album and think that's all you really need but they've remained my favourite current band since then really. The third album in particular is almost as good as Bang Bang.

The show I saw them do in 2011 was when they did a set list bingo where they mailed out a list of songs they would consider playing before the show then the audience could shout what they wanted played next. They ended up about 30 songs, basically everything off the list.

I'm not sure a whole lot would have changed from you seeing them in 2005. Eddie is still as entertaining now, they still do the Top of The Pops chant in Good Weekend. Modern Art has now become a nine minute epic where he comes into the crowd to tell everyone some kind of story. They are still just a ridiculous amount of fun really.

Yes! I'd read about said incorporation beforehand, and worried that it wouldn't come off (either technically or tastefully). But wow, they totally pulled it off, and those were some of the most moving parts of the show.

- Boredoms, FIMAV 2005, Victoriaville QC
- YLT + Lambchop, 3/11/2000, GAMH, SF (afternoon show)
- Brötzmann Chicago Tentet + 2, sometime in 2000 iirc, GAMH, SF

narrowing it down to 3 is crazy -- I could have picked 6 or 7 others for any of those spots

What makes a man start threads? (WilliamC), Friday, 10 May 2013 02:58 (twelve years ago)

Off the top of my head:

Fleet Foxes 2011, Greek Theater Berkeley, CA
Andrew Bird, Howe Gelb + Kristin Hersh 2003, Great American Music Hall San Francisco, CA
Mark Burgess 2006, Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, CA

Agree that picking just three is hard.

Elvin Jones/Jimmy Garrison at the Jazz Showcase, Chicago 4 nights in a row in 1974
Art Ensemble of Chicago at Mandel Hall--University of Chicago Jan 1972
tie for 3rd with about 10 including: Yo La Tengo at Bogarts in Albany NY; Rahsaan Roland Kirk at the Showcase; Mingus at the Quiet Knight on Belmont and at the Jazz Showcase on Oak; Sun Ra at the Quiet Knight; Wilderness Road at the Millers Meadow Rock Festival (1970? 1971?); The Mothers of Invention opening for Cream in 1967; The Real McCoys and the Yardbirds at the Ridgeland Ice Arena in Oak Park Illinois in what, 1965? 1966? The Motor City Mutants at St Andrews Hall and at B'Stilla (for the pizza fight alone!)

Regrets? I never saw the Mothership back in the day & Coltrane died before I knew what a Coltrane was.

This is a fucking mindblowing list.

(and I was at that YLT show in Albany; probably should've put it in my top 3)

Lightning Bolt at the Tufnell Park Dome in 2009 was probably the best gig I've been to, even if I did leave with broken glasses, a nearly broken nose, and tinnitus.
Devo doing Q. Are We Not Men at the Forum that year was mindblowingly great as well.
DJ Harvey at the Oval Space in October was a really cool, wonderful thing to be at - felt weirdly 'special' for being there (I was on the guestlist too, which made me feel like even more of a big-head all night)

Massive shouts to the second gig I ever went to: Of Montreal at the Norwich Arts Centre (which is a converted church) just after they'd released Hissing Fauna....Kevin came out dressed as Peter Pan, got changed into an 8 ft tall flower costumer halfway through. They didn't play TPIAGA though sadly.

the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Friday, 10 May 2013 09:50 (twelve years ago)

Fugazi - Exeter Lemongrove, 2002.
Was talking to a 23-year-old postgrad the other day about Fugazi and he mentioned that they'd played the LG and how it must've been awe4some and amazing and he couldn't imagine it, and I was like "yeah, I was at that gig, it was great; two drummers!" and his eyes went like dinner plates.

Caribou Vibration Ensemble, ATP, 2011.
This was just massive and psychedelic and joyous.

I honestly don't know how I'd pick a third. I don't know how I've picked these two. Swans. My Bloody Valentine. The Necks. Embrace. Hell, Mega City Four two decades ago, all sweaty and being bounced off the ceiling crowd-surfing by my brother and his mates.

they all are afflicted with a sickness of existence (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 10 May 2013 09:51 (twelve years ago)

These are the top three shows I missed:

PJ Harvey trio, TLA, Philadelphia, 199 ...3?
Ornette Coleman, Grant Park Chicago, a few years ago (was feeling under the weather)
James Brown, House of Blues, Chicago, a few years ago, when I confused a "2" and "7" on my calendar and showed up a week late. Then he died.

- age of chance @ leeds poly 1987 : all of their plans came to fruition on this night. hometown gig. amazing vibe. gut wobbling 3d sound.
we all got invited to the london gig (to which i also went - but thats a different story).
brilliant night.

- stone roses @ festival in finland midsummer 1990 : the whole festival was rather special (the cramps ! de la soul ! the mission !), but the roses were at the height of their power and just took the whole weekend to a new level.
oh, and it was the weekend i realised i wanted to spend the rest of my life with the woman i went with.

- impossible : that petrol emotion/the godfathers/the three johns/front 242/young gods/tackhead/the swans/lcd soundsystem/compulsion/the the/julian cope/the woodentops/pwei etc etc - all have provided me with amazingly special experiences.

@KP : i happened to see art brut @ glastonbury in '05.
having had no knowledge of them before, i cannot deny they were one of the weekends highlights for me.
genuinely great entertainment.
only matched by me being involved in a heated debate between a drunk eddie/me and a sober john robb re the then current manchester scene much later on in the day.
eddie was very good company.

1) Young Gods, Manchester Boardwalk 1989

The 3 that immediately sprung to mind:

LCD Soundsystem, Cardiff 2010

U2, Cardiff 1993

Probably change tomorrow but I can't see LCD Soundsystem ever moving from the top 3

nate woolls, Friday, 10 May 2013 18:16 (twelve years ago)

oh yeah I've seen LCD three times and they were phenominal each time. the 2007 one where they did "Yeah" for 20+ minutes was probably the best

Elvin Jones (Boston '02, from about three feet away)
Bad Plus + Wendy Lewis ('09) (seen them so many times, but this one felt special)

honorable mention to the many, many times i've seen Rebirth Brass Band, Shannon Powell, etc., hard to pick out one.

Elvin Jones (Boston '02, from about three feet away)

How was this? I saw Elvin that summer, in a duet with Cecil Taylor, and he seemed pretty frail (but played beautifully; stuck with mallets for the whole set).

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Friday, 10 May 2013 18:27 (twelve years ago)

Devo doing Q. Are We Not Men at the Forum that year was mindblowingly great as well.

hey .. i have the remastered reissue of this album on which this gig was added as an extra ..

mark e, Friday, 10 May 2013 18:29 (twelve years ago)

it was amazing, two sets of old-school elvin fire just like i was hoping for. got to shake his giant hand too. eric lewis on piano was really something else, sustained intensity + LOUD.

precious bonsai children of new york (Jordan), Friday, 10 May 2013 18:36 (twelve years ago)

How does it sound? My overriding memory is being stood a few rows from the front at the start of it and ending up strewn on the floor having been punched by middle aged blokes the second Devo came on stage. Oh and I shook hands with Mark Mothersbaugh at one point (which you can see on the DVD of the show) too.

the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Friday, 10 May 2013 18:43 (twelve years ago)

it sounds fantastic - a really good quality recording and a tight performance (devo have a good rep for live albums though don't they).

it actually makes me f*cked off that i had tix to see them in mcr way back but the buggers cancelled ..

lightning bolt - emos austin - 2004 or thereabouts: i guess i knew about them always playing on the floor but i was unaware they were starting until i noticed the crowd swelling and people standing *on the bar* to see them. stood back for a while but found myself needing to be where the noise was coming from so i pushed through until i was standing over chippendale's drums, feeling the snare hits going through me.

quintron - emos - early 2000s: possibly the most *fun* show i've ever attended, where it seemed like everyone was dancing. he also played on the floor and encouraged the crowd to get on the stage to dance. also, puppets!

the telescopes - powerhaus islington - early 90s, before they joined creation and went baggy: bringing it like the birthday party.

Sounds great, that must have been when the first album had just come out.

I met Eddie before a show in Leeds. He talked to me for 15 minutes even though they were due on stage very soon, think he ended up going from our conversation straight on to the stage two minutes later. He totally humoured all my fanboy questions and was a total gentlemen. It really was a great moment for me.
