It's not as if Gibson guitars need the promotion! Does anybody out there find it extremely ODD to see a TV commercial for an electric guitar!? Even my 53 year old mother upon seeing the commercial couldn't help but exclaim, "sell outs"!! They used to be her favorite guitars......:-)

since when?!?!

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 3 February 2006 07:04 (nineteen years ago)

I used to like the Swiffer till they sold out and did a TV ad.

They have a weirdly decent and weirdly overpriced line of guitars at Target now. I guess the guitars are less overpriced than the FX pedals.

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 3 February 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

yeah it's weird they're advertising guitars. ky lube though, I love that commercial since the subtext is "this hottie suburban mom is gonna get the buttsex"

yo aint it better to see a commercial for guitars than certain other things? i like gibson guitars and they been sellin out for a minute or two. still it's american classic, and if sellin out aint american i don't know what is.

jdchurchill (jdchurchill), Friday, 3 February 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

I think my main point, and I don't know if any of you have actually seen the commercial, was how weird it seemed to actually see it on TV. I instantly started wondering if Fender was going to start making commercials too, or if they would purposely steer away from the idea now to try and give themselves a certain image compared to Gibson. So what do you guys think? Do you care? It must mean that more people than ever are playing the guitar, because I don't see why anybody would release a commercial that is geared toward a certain amount of people.KY lube I can understand, more people are probably having sex now than ever, I think it reaches a wider age group these days too. Are there any other products out there that would surprise you if you saw a commercial for it?

I think Gibson is losing some possible business to the many decent and cheap alternatives that have come about and are easily sold thanks to internet distribution and internet word-of-mouth. I haven't seen the commercial, but I would bet it's all about how freaking AWESOME Gibsons are compared to everything else.

GIbby, Friday, 3 February 2006 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

At Guitar Center there are almost ZERO Gibsons. They are all Epiphones. I think they're just too expensive to sell. But then oddly in the back there's a vintage room with REALLY expensive Gibsons. I don't get it.

Gibby, Friday, 3 February 2006 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

paul reed smith fucked over gibson with their les paul knockoff

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 3 February 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I would rather buy a PRS, actually. I like the tonal variety better. I used to have a Les Paul and was really disappointed because I thought they were best fuckin' guitar in the world until I actually owned one. It had chrome humbuckers, so maybe that had something to do with it, I don't know.

When is Alembic going to get more competitively priced? :-)

Gibby, Friday, 3 February 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

A more interesting point is that the ad sells the guitar as a wealthy man's wall ornament, a luxury item that has nothing to do with actually playing music. The approach (for those who haven't seen the ad, the main character is a bored sheikh) puts the Gibson somewhere between Louis Vuitton luggage and a yacht. It's not unlike those Lexus-with-a-gift-bow ads.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 3 February 2006 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

You are freaking ON THE MONEY GIBBY!!!!! About the commercial! It was like, Gibsons aren't just better guitars, they are better than EVERYTHING! The commercial was bassically this dude luring away some chick( a princess or something, it was in kind of a middle eastern setting) away from this other guy( presumably a prince or something) WITH HIS FLASHY GUITAR PLAYING. The thing that kind of bugged me about it is it really seemed like they were trying to bring back the flashy guitar playing thing, like its a desireable thing and chicks will want you for it.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 3 February 2006 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

Your'e totally right too Joseph, about them making the guitar look like luxurious wall ornament.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 3 February 2006 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

You misinterpreted the plot, actually... The sheikh simply covets his house band leader's guitar more than all other gifts in front of him. So it's sold as a status trinket, not as a chick magnet.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 3 February 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

Why do I remember the chick being the one impressed.........?? Oh well. I'll check it out next time I see it. I haven't really seen it everyday or anything like that, so maybe that's a good thing.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 3 February 2006 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

And as for the guy who said "selling out is American", the American way is whatever you make of it, literally. Although I'm not terribly surprised that someone who speaks with a "yo yo yo" overtone to be prone to selling out.:-)

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 3 February 2006 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

This joseph guy is not a very nice fellow. He claims he has a more interesting point than me, then he turns around and tells you that you got the plot all wrong. Sheesh.

Gibby, Friday, 3 February 2006 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

Still loving the idea that a corporation can sell out. LOVING IT

Sorry Gibby, sorry xgurggleglgllg.
You should see my table manners.

Still loving the idea that a corporation can sell out. LOVING IT

I hate the fact that the phrase LOVING IT will always remind me of McDonald's. Probably even LOVE will always remind me of McDonald's and that's just wrong.

I'm stroking it, Friday, 3 February 2006 23:44 (nineteen years ago)

You don't mean Love the band do you?! Okay, it's probably not as bad as love, the emotion reminding you McDonald's.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Saturday, 4 February 2006 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

Whatever the plot, in the end it's Gibson guitars and the flashy lead work that win.
