u.s.a. vs. england - which country makes better music today?

they were period of times when the brits made better music of course -the late 60's (beatles, kinks, the who, stones and zep came from england too, but worked maunly in the u.s..and more...)
the 70's were good for both countries (roxy music/brian eno vs. television etc..)
also the 80's are more or less equal (sonic youth vs.the fall etc..)
but from the 90's till today - america rules and ebglish music, in general - is boring and repetitive.
ok, there are stereolab, mbv, ride,b&s,mogwai and a few more i forgot but compare that to :dinosaur jr, fugazi, fiery furnaces, built to spill, neutral milk hotel... and thats just the begining of the endless list of great bands from the u.s.a.
will someone argue please.

this is a stoopid question due to the population differences

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 3 February 2006 23:19 (nineteen years ago)

yeah but, good creativity got nothing to do with population u know.

fd, Friday, 3 February 2006 23:24 (nineteen years ago)

I know you are talking today but the '60s portion of your timeline is debatable: Dylan, Otis Redding, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Sly Stone, Motown, Marvin Gaye, Beach Boys, John Coltrane, Archie Shepp, Albert Ayler, Sun Ra, Miles Davis, Byrds, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Captain Beefheart, Jefferson Airplane, CCR, Curtis and the Impressions, Everly Brothers, Velvet Underground (mostly)...

Not even close.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Friday, 3 February 2006 23:26 (nineteen years ago)

the only thing I agree with is that British music has pretty much been sucking shit from the late 90s on.

I think it has something to do with the rise of Coldplay and dance music splintering into a million uninteresting and indecipherable subgenres.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 3 February 2006 23:31 (nineteen years ago)

This is a stupid question due to the fact that all the current English acts he mentioned pretty much have been either inactive or shit for about 15 years.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 3 February 2006 23:40 (nineteen years ago)

Way to post a question when most people in England are asleep or out listening to excellent music at great parties/gigs/clubs...

No, but seriously...what is the point of this question?

And what's more..."(beatles, kinks, the who, stones and zep came from england too, but worked maunly in the u.s..and more...)" - eh?

This kind of thing makes me want to listen to Ethiopian jazz all the long day...

England Vs. California + Texas is more fair populationswise

even so, the u.s. countries are winning big time.

If you subtract Texas, Tennessee, Louisana, Compton and Bronx from the USA, then the USA gets a lot better musically.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 4 February 2006 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

texas is good: spoon, butthole surfers, new bomb turks. great bands indeed.

most of the list is boring and/or unlistenble.
if someone will make an even only chicago list it will be longer and with much more interesting and original bands.

ggall, Saturday, 4 February 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

Answer depends on which specific day of week is "today" US generally makes better music on Mondays, fridays and Saturdays, rest of week goes to UK

via chicago 90'-06': tortoise,wilco,jim orourke,jesus lizard,big black/rapeman/shellac/steve albibi,eleventh dream day,aluminium group,sea and cake,alkaline trio,arsenal,veruca salt,rome,smashing pumpkins,ministry,ok go,joan of arc,the dwarves...not to mention all that jazz and experimental stuff going on over there.and this is just from chicago,not all IL.

chica, Saturday, 4 February 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

It's this turning-music-into-the-World-Cup thing that puts me off talking about music. Not just this (dumb) thread - also think of the effort wasted in 700+ people turning in numbers, and those numbers being culculated, etc, involved with Pazz & Jop.

I cringed at the majority of that list... : / you forgot Liz Phair and Andrew Bird...keke. I don't like either of them that much anyway.
but you're right the experimental/underground/independant scene around here is ...well, fertile and many bands don't suck. : )
