I was just wondering how many musical stars past and present have been to prison, and for what reasons. I can only think of one or two...

So, any ideas/ stories?

IIRC Arthur Lee was jailed for shooting someone through his ceiling.

Paul McCartney in Japan for Marijuana possession. Lee Perry wrote a rather funny weird letter to (i think) the Japanese Embassy in London to protest at the imprisonment

Bobby Conn (mail fraud, IIRC), Scott Weiland, Greg Ginn (for contempt of court when they released 'Everything Went Black' despite contractual constraints), 2 Live Crew, Vince Neil (vehicular homicide), Ozzy Osbourne (burglary), Rick James, Eddie Hazel (biting a stewardess when his LSD-inspired warnings about aliens sawing off the plane wings went unheeded), Slick Rick, Lisa Lopez, Charles Manson, Varg Vikernes

Merle Haggard, Freddy Fender (I think), David Allan Coe (I think), Jim Gordon from Derek and the Dominos (matricide), Charles Manson (uhh . . . ), Tommy Lee, Mick and Keef (for the Redlands bust), Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys (probably only a couple of hours in county lock-up, but it still makes me happy). I'm sure there are more.

I failed to notice Charlie had already been mentioned above-- apologies. I think Haggard was in for theft; same for Freddy Fender, if he was, in fact, in. Tommy Lee for various crimes against sobriety, propriety, and Pam Anderson, I believe.

I think Freddy Fender was in for a small amount of marijuana, iirc. Same deal for Roky Erikson - ended up in a psych ward to avoid jail and got electroshocked into oblivian. Tejas justice.

RL Burnside is a convicted murderer.

Chuck Berry is a convicted pervert.

Simon Ritchie did some time.

David Allen Coe.

Jim Morrison
Luther Campbell

Both in Miami for "indecency"

There was a hip hop act called The Lifers group, which I believe was more or less what their name said. 'Belly Of The Beast' was terrific.

every rollin' stone must have seen the other side of the bars at one time or other

the stranglers (nice in Nice) something to do with a riot at a gig. sid vicous (he is too a musical star) and my favourite one is hugh something, the drummer from the housemartins, who axe-murdered his wife and her lover, thus missing out on the success experienced by his mates as the beautiful south and fatboyslim. (its happy hour again, and again, and again...)
