Shit, I might have actually arranged a trip if I'd known a week or two ahead.

Sundar (sundar), Saturday, 4 February 2006 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

There had better be a commercial live recording of Symphony #13 at some point.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 4 February 2006 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

I think that 3 UK appearances in the last 18 years (the last one being in 1998) means time for a new UK appearance! With 100 guitars! I live in hope.

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Saturday, 4 February 2006 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

why didn't you post this yesterday, assface?!

Christopher Costello (CGC), Sunday, 5 February 2006 00:51 (nineteen years ago)

I could have gotten in for free, and I FUCKING MISSED IT.

yeah czars!, Sunday, 5 February 2006 01:04 (nineteen years ago)

sorry I was just catching up on my friday nytimes today and jumped out of my chair when I got the news...very nice deal, they had a cushy bus that drove everyone out to jersey, followed by a reception with alot of the musicians (but no branca, he came out for a brief bow at the end), and the same bus back...sweet! beautiful small auditorium, was being recorded for release, don't worry. Very cool to see 100 guitarists in sections of five, very democratic looking group, little budding Lee Ranaldo and Thurston types, chicks who looked like classical violinists or indie types, balding lawyer lookin dudes, college prof types, headbangers, all playing in unison, with this amazing focus, You could really hear the different sections in parts, sounding like organs, strings, horns, etc, but just 80 reg guitars, 20 basses, and Wharton Tiers on drums....holy shit! I was a few feet from some dudes playing and it looked like SO MUCH FUCKIN FUN. I didn't realize it was originally performed at the World Trade Center, June 13, 2001 (Symphony #13, two months before 9/11, pretty creepy) Anyway, that's the way it was...
p.s. Also Atavistic will release 1st (?) recording of Indeterminate Activity of Resultant Masses from 1981 later this year. There, happy?

douglas eklund (skolle), Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:26 (nineteen years ago)

"symphony #6" will be losing the devil reference from the title to make it more family-friendly.

weekly handle change (haitch), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 04:26 (nineteen years ago)

haha raffi should make an appearance

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 08:28 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

Holy shit. 'Glenn' is doing this at the Roundhouse in London. Can't wait. If I had any balls (or talent), I'd go to the auditions at the Forum beforehand! Anyone gonna try out??

gnarly sceptre, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

I emailed them about it but didn't receive a reply. But since I can't actually read music it's probably a good thing, I'd probably be way out of my depth. In fact, looking at the discussions on the yahoo group for Branca musicians I know I would. What's a "stop" again?

Matt #2, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

I went. It was, well:

GO!

lukas, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

This is tonight!

First time I've been to the Roundhouse, but I'm imagining this to be the perfect venue...

Hat tip to LineOut. May live performance of Symphony 13 in Seattle at Olympic Sculpture Park:

SAM at 75 Party in the Park

Glenn Branca’s “Symphony No. 13 (Hallucination City)” for SAM’s Party in the Park at the Olympic Sculpture Park

New York composer Glenn Branca is seeking 80 guitarists and 20 bass players to volunteer for his upcoming monumental performance of “Symphony No.13 (Hallucination City)”. This performance will be in Seattle on May 16 for the Seattle Art Museum’s Party in the Park, a fundraising event celebrating the museum’s 75th Anniversary.

There will be two rehearsals on May 14th and 15th each lasting from 11:00am to 9pm. Additionally, there will be a sound check on the afternoon of May 16, prior to the performance at the Olympic Sculpture Park.

It will not be possible to monetarily compensate musicians, so all musicians will be volunteering their time. Food and drink will be supplied at all rehearsals and the performance.

All musicians must be able to read standard staff notation and follow a part measure by measure.

Party in the Park, SAM’s rock-and-roll birthday bash, will be at the Olympic Sculpture Park on May 16. Party in the Park will showcase Branca’s “Symphony No. 13 (Hallucination City)”, along with other exclusive artistic and entertainment experiences, cocktails, party fare, and excitement throughout the evening.

For more information about volunteering as a musician contact gl***@gl***br*nc*.com and you will be sent detailed information.

....

I'm guessing you can figure out the stars in the email.

remains probably best gig ever

are his symphonies still being performed? I assume they were scored?

default damager (lukas), Monday, 26 August 2024 21:34 (one year ago)

No idea, probably not though! When the classical establishment catches up with him they'll be canon. Give it a few decades, or maybe centuries.
