RFI: Chopin Nocturnes

I on the hunt for a complete set, but the often-recommended Pires set leaves me somewhat cold (a little too idiosyncratic for my tastes). I've heard the set Rubinstein recorded in the '60s and liked it a lot, but I know he recorded most or all of them twice before that. Anyone want to take a crack at a semi-definitive recommendation? Anyone?

I have the '60s Rubinstein set, and I like it a lot. I'm not familiar with the earlier Rubinstein sets though, so I can't do a proper comparison. From what I gather, the tempos are somewhat faster on average, and the recording quality is probably not as good.

I have all Moravec's Chopin discs except the Nocturnes set. When I want to hear Chopin I reach for him almost every time. Can't imagine his nocturnes are any drop in quality from the rest. I should really stop procrastinating and buy that Nocturnes set myself.

I've gone through the Nocturnes by Katin, Wild, and Biret, and haven't been satisfied with any.

I started this thread in a previous life and not long after doing so took the plunge on the '60s Rubinstein. I haven't been disappointed.

she didn't do a lot of nocturnes but martha argerich is a fave of mine. actually kind of surprised there isn't more talk about her on ilm.

Rubinstein is excellent.

Ashkenazy is good and unsentimental, but the recording quality is roomy and thus difficult to enjoy without your finger on the volume knob.
