scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 5 February 2006 02:53 (nineteen years ago)

yeah...prince...2006....

i'm sure it'll be good.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Sunday, 5 February 2006 03:02 (nineteen years ago)

I'd be way more excited about this if Prince's current single wasn't totally awful.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 5 February 2006 03:15 (nineteen years ago)

I'm just living in the hope that he pulls out an oldie for the second song. Or third song, if they let him do the same thing U2 did last time. Which they ought to, since he's fucking PRINCE.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 5 February 2006 03:16 (nineteen years ago)

there is no musical act that could make me watch Steve Martin 2006 on SNL 2006.

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 5 February 2006 03:16 (nineteen years ago)

"Black Sweat" is great.

Richj (Rich), Sunday, 5 February 2006 03:18 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't watched SNL for like five years, but I'm going to check it out tonight.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 5 February 2006 03:23 (nineteen years ago)

Keep your expectations low and it should be okay.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 5 February 2006 03:33 (nineteen years ago)

i like watching prince. he iz a freek. even moreso in 2006.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 5 February 2006 03:35 (nineteen years ago)

Hey all you Frozen High School Opinion Cavemen,

People who say crap like "SNL stopped being funny 15 years ago" don't know their ass from a hole in the ground. You were YOUNGER and MORE EASILY ENTERTAINED. Comedy changes. Those old reruns FUCKING BLOW by today's standards of comedy. They're mostly not funny anymore. Yeah, Phil Hartman was great at the time and some of his skits still hold up. But SNL has been funnier in recent years than it ever has. It goes through so many different ups and downs, you never know when it's going to be really good, so-so or lame. But, it was always like that with the occasional year or two of greatness, which is still how it works. It's been pretty damn hilarious for the past few years.

Writer's Block From The Future, Sunday, 5 February 2006 03:49 (nineteen years ago)

I wish SNL would introduce new cast members more frequently. The whole current cast (minus the three newbies from this year) has been there way too long.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 5 February 2006 03:51 (nineteen years ago)

I like the two news bitches and the fat spic. I just wanted to be offensive as possible there for some reason. I'm not sure why. That's what writer's block will do to you.

Writer's Block From The Future, Sunday, 5 February 2006 03:54 (nineteen years ago)

The Phil Hartman years were pretty terrible, too.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 5 February 2006 03:58 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, if it ever had a soul, SNL lost it when Lorne Greene chose Andrew Dice Clay over Nora Dunn and Jan Hooks.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 5 February 2006 04:01 (nineteen years ago)

Umm, Lorne Michaels maybe?

Aaron St. John (StJohn), Sunday, 5 February 2006 04:15 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Lorne Greene was either busy selling Alpo or decomposing (can't remember exactly when he died).

Not all of the Phil Hartman years were terribly, though. As long as Lovitz was there, every show was worth watching.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 5 February 2006 04:17 (nineteen years ago)

you know what would be nice? if prince played for the entire length of the episode. maybe tear up a photo of george bush or madonna after playing 'nothing compares to you' on a silver psaltery

no bones, Sunday, 5 February 2006 04:36 (nineteen years ago)

the musical guests come on at midnight, right? glad i caught this thread in time, even if the performance sucks.

the petronas towers (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 5 February 2006 04:58 (nineteen years ago)

Uh. Prince just killed it.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:07 (nineteen years ago)

woah

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:08 (nineteen years ago)

SHRED

Paul Eater (eater), Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:08 (nineteen years ago)

Namely, that was the most amazing guitar playing I think he's ever done on TV, live or otherwise. I'm actually kinda salivating for this new album now.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:09 (nineteen years ago)

yeah it was great. he's been practicing guitar or something.

no bones, Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:10 (nineteen years ago)

I thought it was awful!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:10 (nineteen years ago)

I missed it, dammit! I should know after watching SNL for 20 years which segment the musical guests come in, but I had to empty the dryer!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:16 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, that was great. Also, besides getting better sound than SNL bands usually manage, he seemed to get better camera angles and lighting. Not sure if the guitar playing was any better than some of the Purple Rain stuff, but it *was* pretty hot.

dlp9001, Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:19 (nineteen years ago)

prince slayed!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:25 (nineteen years ago)

OMG the prince show

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:27 (nineteen years ago)

adding to the raves

the petronas towers (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:29 (nineteen years ago)

haha the "prince" sketch is pretty funny!

the petronas towers (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:31 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Fred Armisen's never failed with that Prince Show sketch.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:32 (nineteen years ago)

MORE EASILY ENTERTAINED. Comedy changes. Those old reruns FUCKING BLOW by today's standards of comedy. They're mostly not funny anymore. Yeah, Phil Hartman was great at the time and some of his skits still hold up. But SNL has been funnier in recent years than it ever has.

You know I'm young and I've seen almost every season of SNL and I can say without any sort of generational bias that SNL is currently less funny than Mad TV and I honestly cannot think of any worse insult than that. Every single skit is completely and utterly forced. The audience doesn't even laugh any more.

I don't even expect much. When Will Ferell was on the show, I accepted that the rest was pretty awful but at least Will did something funny sometimes. When he left I remember they tried to anchor the show on Jimmy "chuckles" Fallon, to no great success. Now the show has Keenan.

(BTW I saw Prince and he fucking rocked. I'm kind of sad that he's moving towards a more guitar-centric sort of thing, cause I love me some synth prince, but it's okay because he gets some fucking nasty guitar tones. Way more rock and roll than any modern rock band I've heard in the last few years)

~~~~~, Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:32 (nineteen years ago)
Thing is, Prince has always torn it up on guitar (see "Bambi") -- he's just tended to keep it in check on his TV performances, which in the past few years tended to be sort of anticlimactic. Plus, I really liked the way he sang on this new tune.
Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:41 (nineteen years ago)
andy samberg in a body glove suit! there IS a god!
maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:45 (nineteen years ago)
He dropped a release date plug. Oh Prince!
Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:51 (nineteen years ago)
go him!
maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:52 (nineteen years ago)
OMG, there is a 2 foot difference between rachel dratch and steve martin.
maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:54 (nineteen years ago)
also, steve's ponytail is very ned raggett!
maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:57 (nineteen years ago)
rachel dratch is scary.
Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:59 (nineteen years ago)
aww leave her alone
shadeball (chaki), Sunday, 5 February 2006 06:16 (nineteen years ago)
also, steve's ponytail is very ned raggett!
What, where?
Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 5 February 2006 06:20 (nineteen years ago)
Odd that no one mentioned the second song featured some new Prince Protege -- Tamar or something. S'okay, I suppose...
Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 5 February 2006 06:32 (nineteen years ago)
What's the name of that first song?!
Sundar (sundar), Sunday, 5 February 2006 06:43 (nineteen years ago)
"Better Than The Next One"
Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 5 February 2006 06:51 (nineteen years ago)
He was great tonight. Second song didn't do much for me...but a fine performance.
matt riedl (veal), Sunday, 5 February 2006 07:25 (nineteen years ago)
I caught the first song. Anyone know who was in the band? They didn't look like the musicians he's been rolling with lately.
Anyway, I liked the looseness and shredding, it wasn't what I expected.
Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 5 February 2006 07:27 (nineteen years ago)
He's been touring around the US with Tamar lately, doing a bunch of showcases. He's been acting as her guitarist with occasional co-vocals on some numbers. I missed the show on the 2nd in NYC but have heard good things thru the fan messageboards. I wasn't too blown away by her on SNL. Good voice, pretty, but--Prince is always interesting when it comes to his proteges: you always have to wonder just what it is he sees in them that he thinks will make the public drop their Mary J./Beyonce/... albums and go running to his finds. Of course many of the protege albums end up being classic, but mostly by the grace of his presence rather than by any outstanding talent on the headliner's part.
Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 5 February 2006 07:36 (nineteen years ago)
And apologies for the spelling errors in that last post. I'm tired. Protegees, correct?
Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 5 February 2006 07:38 (nineteen years ago)
holy shit that was so badass.
shadeball (chaki), Sunday, 5 February 2006 08:10 (nineteen years ago)
song: 4/10, performance: 3o84349843098524398/10
mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 5 February 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)
the thing that I found especially cool was that, unlike most musical guests, he was IN CHARGE on that stage.
he didn't even have to do a jig!
jimmy loves maryann, jimmy wants to be her man (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 5 February 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)
i didn't see the show but i have approx. 0 doubt that they only reason they did "the prince show" because they were like, "Hey, Prince is on, we HAVE to do the Prince show! k guys?;" this is what passes for "smarts" on SNL
i dunno, usually when they have a well-known impersonation and the "impersonatee" is a guest they do a winky drop-in
i can't believe i missed the first song!
s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 5 February 2006 21:28 (nineteen years ago)
Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Sunday, 5 February 2006 21:51 (nineteen years ago)
I was kinda hoping they'd do a reverse Charlie Murphy sketch w/Prince.
Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 5 February 2006 22:11 (nineteen years ago)
I wanna know why they have so many goddamn talk show "parodies". Is it because they had vast success with a couple of them? That was YEARS AGO, move on please!
It's NOT funny, it DOESN'T work any more, they NEVER try anything new. I only watched it for Prince (worth it). I guess I'll tune back in when Wolf Eyes is on.
matt riedl (veal), Sunday, 5 February 2006 23:04 (nineteen years ago)
new single
http://www.youtube.com/w/Prince%2C-Black-Sweat?v=yHaAdamXQX0&search=prince
yeah it comes on generic but this is the first single from him that I can really get into since... I dunno, 'seven'?
milton parker (Jon L), Monday, 6 February 2006 00:25 (nineteen years ago)
Does he have other songs that pastiche Hendrix as overtly and effectively as the 1st SNL track? (And, yes, it's OK for him and not for Lenny Kravitz because LK can't play like that.)
Sundar (sundar), Monday, 6 February 2006 03:07 (nineteen years ago)
Bambi, Peach, etc etc
shadeball (chaki), Monday, 6 February 2006 03:15 (nineteen years ago)
(As a lot of u know, Fred is a huge fan and a Music Club member and
he shared this with the club 2day.-j7)
Hello! This is Fred from SNL. I tried to post earlier today and it
didn't come up, so apologies if this is a repeat. I just wanted to
share my experience from this week. I was so psyched that Prince was
the musical guest as was the whole cast. Watching him do his sound
check and rehearsal up close was unbelieveable. That band is
amazing. I approached him and told him how great I think he is and
he was super kind. He made me feel like it was okay that I do an
impression of him. I couldn't believe I was standing there talking
to him. I have wanted to meet him since forever (who am I talking
to? YOU know what I mean!). He is charismatic in person. It's pretty
powerful. I don't think it's just because I am such a huge fan.
After he left, his guitars (the blue Strat and that Telecaster) were
left on stage on stands. I just stood there about a foot away
staring at them for ages. THOSE are the ones he plays!!! Right
there! Everyone in his group (musicians, singers, crew, assistants)
were really sweet. Very positive and happy to be at the show. I even
got to meet the NPGMC site people! I always wondered what they
looked like. They were super cool too and I bombarded them with
questions about the site. In case anyone is wondering about him
appearing on the "Prince Show" sketch...
We did ask him early on, and the answer was that he wanted to focus
on the musical performance. His people were nice about it and they
had no problem with us doing it. We wrote a version that didn't have
him in it and a version where he made an appearance, just in case.
When I saw him rehearsing with his band, I realized "oh yeah, he's a
musician and wants to give the best possible performance!" Why would
he want to focus on something else? I understood and was happy just
to be in the same room with him.
Fred
been too long since " i hate you "...
retrogurl, Monday, 6 February 2006 08:33 (nineteen years ago)
oh boy, "the prince show" is a recurring sketch...
Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 6 February 2006 14:30 (nineteen years ago)
The best guitar playing on TV in years, unfortunately trapped in an unworthy song.
High energy performance + crack choreograhpy + no material = Prince now ready for Vegas.
Edward III (edward iii), Monday, 6 February 2006 15:30 (nineteen years ago)
i dunno, usually when they have a well-known impersonation and the "impersonatee" is a guest they do a winky drop-in
Prince doesn't act.
Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 6 February 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)
Tracer Hand, have you seen Purple Rain? Under The Cherry Moon?
Yes, I guess you have.
Redd Harvest (Ken L), Monday, 6 February 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)
Wow, this thread is acting as confirmation of my suspicion that ILM has become the refuge for soulless creatures from the depths of Hell.
Dan (Enjoy One (1) Life) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 February 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)
And this is news to you?
Redd (How Long Did It Take You To Figure That One Out?) Harvest (Ken L), Monday, 6 February 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)
Not really, hence "confirmation of my suspicion" as opposed to "a terrifying revelation".
i desperately want to see this, and i refuse to click the youtube link because...
(sniffles)
well, because it won't be high resolution.
(bawls)
Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 6 February 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)
Youtube is always choppy as hell for me, not even watchable.
Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)
The best guitar playing on TV in years, unfortunately trapped in an unworthy song.
That first song - and "Black Sweat' - are so much better than any of the tired stuff on Musicology . I'm just praying this new album is full of similar energy. I haven't heard "Te Amo Corazon" yet but, from what I hear, I hope it's just filler.
Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:13 (nineteen years ago)
youtube is windows media right? i hate that shit
s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:15 (nineteen years ago)
Please elaborate Mr. ILM veteran. Are you talking about the posts loving Prince or the posts criticizing the material or the posts about SNL or something else?
M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)
wow, "Black Sweat" is pretty good. nice to hear him do the harsh minimal drum machine thing again. and did he say "I'll make you scream like a white lady"?
I hope you replicate the Fishbone sample accurately too, Dan.
Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)
Ned was that a ghetto insult or a sincere hope? It's so hard to tell with you anymore.
Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:04 (nineteen years ago)
Dan (You Got Your Ghetto Insult On My Sincere Hope!) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)
I could behind almost everything in that first performance but him wrapping up his hair like my 70-year aunt.
Candicissima (candicissima), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)
Curse you, SNL, for making me hate you so much that I actually missed this.
brianiast (briania), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)
I only caught the first song. I thought the guitar heroics were impressive, but the song went in one ear and out the other - meaning I can't remember anything about it except the dancers and the guitar.
o. nate (onate), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)
Black Sweat is REALLY GOOD! I'm shocked!
Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 6 February 2006 22:47 (nineteen years ago)
God damn did he tear it up on that first number. That was about the best rock performance on Tv that I have ever seen.
Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 00:14 (nineteen years ago)
wow, i finally caught it on youtube (i did have to go to bed that nite) and he was fab. too bad some people couldn't be PAID to watch prince in 2006. he's a lil' fireball.
scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 00:37 (nineteen years ago)
Man, I can't tell you how long it's been since I've been excited by a Prince single (well, actually, Emancipation era), but I've been putting Black Sweat on repeat today and it holds up. I gotta hear this album.
Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 01:09 (nineteen years ago)
And OF COURSE Prince killed it live. He ALWAYS kills it live.
Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 01:11 (nineteen years ago)
Prince should have just goose-stepped out of that place after the first song he funking so jacknifed that semi right outta control style.
What a rock n' roll performance! I just had to find a board where others recognized the sheer dominance of that performance.
JasonistheArgonautwithahelmeton, Tuesday, 7 February 2006 02:44 (nineteen years ago)
that was pretty hot, but not quite as hot as 'while my guitar gently weeps' at the r&r hof
