I was looking at all the old Pazz and Jops today, and was kinda amazed by how few of the winners are records that I really like a lot.

My POX:

The Clash "London Calling"
Michael Jackson "Thriller"
Hole "Live Through This"
Outkast "Stankonia"
Prince "Sign O The Times"
PJ Harvey "To Bring You My Love"
Liz Phair "Exile In Guyville"
Nirvana "Nevermind"
Kanye West "Late Registration"
Outkast "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below"

Oh wait, I think I'd have to switch out that second Outkast for Wilco, actually.

I go exactly with blount's excellent list, except I swap that Costello thing out for Graceland.

tho, seriously happy to see two of the critics I respect the most on ILX put Basement Tapes on top! now I'm totally inspired to pull out some Dylan, in my verging-on-drunk state.. Live 66 (electric) sounds like a real good call

like that list a lot, i guess I really just don't get the Hole love (as expressed by a number of folx on this thread); I remember that album album coming out and just thinking "eh". was it that good?? i guess I need to listen to it again! it has been over a decade since I listened. I mean at the time I was way into that sound but I just thought Courtney sounded lame compared to like Babes in Toyland. and I'm a massive Nirvana fan. and I'm a massive female rock fan. I love Bikini Kill, for one; I love the Runaways! I love lots of stuff. but man, Hole just never ever did it for me. i guess it's just one of those thing.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 5 February 2006 09:54 (nineteen years ago)

i like hole and courtney, but for me it's about the goth grotesquerie as much as the music (weird mix of surfpunk, sunset strip metal, shambling janglepop, stevie nicks, '77-'91 anglophilia, always so much more glammed out than its austere indie and riotgrrl cousins*).

*babes in toyland's fontanelle was awesome, although i sorta can't stand kat bjelland as a person

the petronas towers (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 5 February 2006 10:07 (nineteen years ago)

and she's gotten to be like prince in terms of her taste in female proteges (melissa auf der maur, and her recent all-girl band) -- statuesque, freaky, big-haired, intimidating, terrific foils to her messy nuttiness.

1971 - The Who - Who's Next
1974 - Joni Mitchell - Court and Spark

Oh damn, how did I miss Nation Of Millions winning? I'm not sure if that necessarily changes my POX list, though.

POV: Pazz and Jop winners that haven't aged as well:

Not bad records, but let's just say there were better releases that year.

Arrested Development Slanted & Enchanted, Automatic For The People, Sweet Old World
Little Creatures Rain Dogs, New Day Rising, Unforgettable Fire
Odelay Call the Doctor, Being There, Different Class

London Calling
The Basement Tapes
Exile in Guyville

Unheard by me: most of Late Registration

I prefer other albums by: The Who, Elvis Costello, Talking Heads, Prince, Public Enemy, De La Soul, Nirvana, Lucinda Williams, Wilco (if you count the ones they did w/Billy Bragg)

But basically I enjoy them all except for Imperial Bedroom and the Arrested Development one.
