So, I saw the LA posting for local shows, and it made me jealous.

Here are the rumored shows coming to SF:

Mylo
Twitch
MANDY
Tim Sweeney (with Juan Maclean Feb 15)

If you know more, please let me know. These are all shows that I will attend. Also, if you want to go to the Tim Sweeney/Juan Maclean show ... I live like four blocks from there. Hit me up if you're into having some drinks or something.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Sunday, 5 February 2006 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

supergrass
animal collective
electric six
david gilmour

all in the next 5-7 weeks

shushu, Sunday, 5 February 2006 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

Did you catch animal collective last time? I missed it.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Sunday, 5 February 2006 22:38 (nineteen years ago)

Hate to break the bubble, but I heard Mylo lost his hearing and had to cancel his tour. "It's All Gone Pete Tong" steez.

Tarpley (Tarpley), Sunday, 5 February 2006 22:39 (nineteen years ago)

Ellen Allien on March 19th.

Vitalic on March 23rd.

Justus Kohncke on March 26th.

Jamie Lidell on April 12.

This is all I can think of off the top of my head aside from the various local parties etc....

It seems like the MANDY thing has been a rumor for a while. I'll believe it when I see some documentation.

Oh, and can somebody PLEASE get Ricardo or Luciano here???

Chantilly Bass (ChantillyBass), Sunday, 5 February 2006 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

Then there's that Carta band...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 5 February 2006 22:46 (nineteen years ago)

Chantilly:
"Justus Kohncke on March 26th."

Please, I beg, don't fuck with me on this one. Do you know the venue?

Also, did anyone see Audion/Ellen Allien at 1015 Fulsom? I went, and, to say the least, I was really, really disappointed. It was billed as a live performance, and instead I got to see the world's most personality-free set ever from Matthew Dear. Once he had forced half the people to go downstairs into the trance room, Ellen took the stage and got to try and work up the crowd with her set. NO live performance, and Matthew Dear fucked it all up. Dry as the Sahara as usual.

Actually, I saw him last year at the WMC in Miami, and he rocked South Beach. Love his recordings, hate his DJ sets. Snore.

But, Chantilly, details on the Justus Kohncke show? I love you for telling me about this.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Sunday, 5 February 2006 22:54 (nineteen years ago)

p.s. Chantilly, I've read your blog, and I like it. Good info.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Sunday, 5 February 2006 23:03 (nineteen years ago)

Check this out

Apparently Blasthaus is celebrating the opening of their new venue that week, so their bringing in some really top notch stuff. It's not a dream...

I heard the last Allien show was supposed to be at Rx, but 1015 outbid them. Shame.

Also, the Kontrol parties are also good for stuff on the minimal tip if you are interested.

Chantilly Bass (ChantillyBass), Sunday, 5 February 2006 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

Elmyr de Hory (Elmyr), Sunday, 7 January 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

How was Daniel Bell?

I missed this as I was Djing in the Tenderloin.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Sunday, 7 January 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

he was excellent. he selected and mixed almost flawlessly and very minimally, but it was also housey and almost disco at points. the transitions and tension were super-tight, but there was lots of space in the mix. it felt balanced and classic and also pushing and modern without being nu-minimal sounding even though there were recent tracks in his set (villalobos' DM rmx was a highlight). the crowd was into it and diverse, the dancefloor consistently packed. i think he's a master; there aren't many people with those records who can mix them as well.

josh. (disco stu), Sunday, 7 January 2007 23:22 (eighteen years ago)

Dan Bell is one of a handful of second wave DJs who have found a way to maintain their own stylistic integrity and move forward. That being said, some of the tracks he played were a bit house for me, but that's to be expected. Also, that's probably a smart move in a city where "tech house" is often just referred to as "techno."

I'm glad someone pasted what I said before about Matthew Dear. Well, it's a little abrasive the way I said it, but I still feel the same. Saturday he fucking KILLED me. He was GREAT.

Matthew Dear PA = SICK
DJ = not my thing

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Monday, 8 January 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

its like a big high school gymnasium!

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

Actually the space is fine. It has more to do with the crowds at the last two shows I saw there (DJ Marlboro and Dengue Fever).

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

Drew Daniel: "How was Daniel Bell? I missed this as I was Djing in the Tenderloin."

Hey Drew, is there a list or something to know when you're DJing? And since you asked, Cameron Octigan summed it up pretty well. Daniel Bell was pretty much impeccable - though I have to admit I bailed early because my feet were hurting from Matthew Dear.

Cameron Octigan: "Michael Mayer & Gui Boratto may be playing"

Where and when?!

Elmyr de Hory (Elmyr), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 06:32 (eighteen years ago)

---> It's up in the air. The club that I work for, Mezzanine, is still trying to schedule this. I've really been pushing for the event, and I want it to happen. I told them ... Kontrol and Dirtybird plus Mayer & Boratto = Great show. We're setting it up.

Lindstrom & Carl Craig? We're VERY VERY VERY excited.

ILM-ers ... please hit me up if you want list on shows.

re: the SF tape music fest... i know this is gonna sound dumb to some of you, but can anyone confirm that stockhausen and eno will not be in attendance? it is just others playing their shit, right? i hate how the performance of modern composition is so "x will be performing y's Z with y in attendance and t watching from the heavens" or whatever...

that's so taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

as far as I know, not in attendance!

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

I've got my tix for Sunday - anyone else gonna be there...?

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

I should be, I believe milton as well

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

I'll be there Saturday and Sunday. Although, maybe ... just maybe ... only Sunday. The Stockhausen piece seems like it will be the one to catch.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

the friday night show with a surround rework of James Tenney & the 3 Ligeti electronic pieces should be good too -- actually all the local names on the bill that I've heard do great work

Alvin Curran is playing tomorrow at Recombinant, might be ok, I'm going.

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

well I am really lookin forward to this personally, having just heard Hymnen for the first time a few weeks ago. I'll be the guy with the "Mars or Bust" button (I have no idea what any of you look like, altho I hear Dominique is hotttt)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

any and all of the nude hip hop photos are exactly what i look like. oh wait, wait ... i mean that they're not. i forgot.

well, i'd certainly like to meet any and all of you ILMers headed to the event. how shall we do this?

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

everyone start chanting "I - L - M - I - L - M" during the stockhausen piece. then we'll slowly gravitate towards one another until we form a tribal-like circle in the middle of the auditorium. cool?

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

big crowd last night - did anyone else notice any distortion at certain points...? I heard some pops that definitely sounded like digital artifacting...

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 29 January 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

on the high end, definitely -- was actually sitting right next to mixing board near Matt and Cliff, and especially in second half, saw a lot of crazy sounds that were direct results of crazy movement on the mixer. still loved it tho. actually, I totally forgot ILM people were going to be there -- would love to have met up!

Dominique (dleone), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

yeah I would have too but we got there a little late and then my will call tickets weren't there and I was surprised by how many people were there etc. In general I enjoyed it, although the piece is totally harsh at certain points and probably longer than I would have liked. Also coulda done without those pussies leaving in the middle of the first section!

My favorite parts were the "red" vocal recitation in the first section, and then those endless rolling ring-modulated waves going back and forth in the second one. We were right next to the far-left speaker in the back though, and definitely caught some way-too-loud frequencies at certain points.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

wasn't loud enough for me -- a lot of those distorted rips are actually on the tape, and Matt was augmenting them at the mixer. the little dropouts & spittles in the chords at the beginning of the second hour were definitely ADAT glitches though (Matt made a joke about the 'state of the art' DA88 tape deck they had to rent in order to play the ancient tapes sent from Stockhausen Verlag)

hearing the piece in surround was like hearing it for the first time, I was fully gone from the very first filter sweep

SF Sound = city treasure, can hardly wait until their new season begins in March

will you be at the show dominique? i could maybe swing by at some point!

i have to be at a wedding in golden gate park on saturday morning, but i'm guessing that everyone (groom & groom included) is going to be sporting an awesome margarita-related hangover. and i still have to figure out a dress to wear to the wedding, and a wedding gift: what do you get for a guy who loves leather, cartoons, and death metal?

69 - ha, that's great! i'm old friends with f@rhad--i've known him since he was 18. i used to book his various bands for shows in cambridge in the '90s, back when i booked shows. i still remember his misfits cover band's cover of 'last caress'--the lead singer (who will be at the wedding as well) did the most incredible glenn danzig impression

dominique what is noise pancakes? i am sending you my phone number now

geeta, Friday, 22 July 2011 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

cool, noise pancakes is a semi-weekly noise show held noon-2 on sundays where people come and literally eat pancakes and sprawl out on the floor of the Lab to watch 4-5 short sets of noise/ambient/drone music. it's run by grux from caroliner, and is something of an institution for bay area experimental music community. really chill, and the music goes suprisingly well with hangovers and pleasant SF afternoons. i'll send u the invite

jaxon, maybe not *next* door, but was DJing a benefit show at the Beatbox, which used to be fat city, 11th @ folsom. u should check it out, because it has great sound, lights, and they're looking for stuff to book later in year

Dominique, Friday, 22 July 2011 20:53 (fourteen years ago)

69, Friday, 22 July 2011 20:53 (fourteen years ago)

four weeks pass...

Last night with Optimo was brilliant. Now I understand what all the hype is about.

viborg, Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:31 (fourteen years ago)

love them and wish i'd been there. i've seen them DJ 20 times in the last ten years, probably. i miss them.

going to try to see them tonight, in NYC. they're flying in straight from SF to the gig and setting up at 1 AM, from what i heard!

geeta, Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:40 (fourteen years ago)

That sounds like a grueling trip for them. I'd love to find one of their recent sets. The older ones I've heard weren't quite the same as what I heard last night. Dare I say...magical?

viborg, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:08 (fourteen years ago)

details details!! what'd they play?

geeta, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

You really want spoilers? They might play a similar set tonight, maybe not. Highlights include 12" remix of Running Up That Hill, Joy Division Atmosphere, Arthur Russell edit (can't remember exactly, I think I shook my brain loose last night), some Depeche Mode which I could do without, lots of acid/old school house (eg Move Your Body), and quite a bit of newer stuff. I was having trouble placing it all what with all the excitement. Definitely Oni Ayhun, Blawan - Getting Me Down. Etc. Seemed like they were doing quite a bit of editing on the fly too, maybe I was mistaken.

viborg, Sunday, 4 September 2011 21:45 (fourteen years ago)

Arthur Russell edit (can't remember exactly, I think I shook my brain loose last night

probably the insane edit of 'is it all over my face?' by the mole?

do you have the 'optimogeddon' mixes? get 'em, they're great

Awesome awesome awesome, thanks so much! And yes it probably was the Is It All Over My Face edit.

Btw is that your blog? I'm afraid I may have made some less than courteous comments there in the past; if it's yours you have my humblest apologies.

viborg, Sunday, 4 September 2011 22:25 (fourteen years ago)

no, that's not my blog--my blog is here: http://www.theoriginalsoundtrack.com

heading out to see optimo in a few! will report back!

geeta, Monday, 5 September 2011 00:50 (fourteen years ago)

How was it?

I like that article about Conrad Schnitzler you wrote. Honestly I'd never heard of him before but fascinating that he seemed to influence so many other artists, including Thomas Fehlmann among others. I couldn't figure out a way to comment on the blog in a way that allowed me to use a recognizable name, but I was just going to say it was an interesting article, so no biggie.

viborg, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 00:42 (fourteen years ago)

thanks, glad you liked it!

The Optimo gig in NYC was tough. They had played in SF the night before--a four-hour set, they told me--and they'd only slept for an hour. Then they flew cross-country to NYC, and ended up spending the entire day in transit because their flight from SF was delayed. They flew into Newark, apparently, landed at about 2 AM, cabbed it up to the venue in Brooklyn at top speed and made it there a bit before 3 AM. Back on the decks, right after a six hour flight and no sleep! The venue (Littlefield) closed at 4 AM. The NYC gig was good, even against the odds, but I wish I'd been at the SF gig.

geeta, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 01:01 (fourteen years ago)

one of the many great moments in their set was when they suddenly dropped in this old northern soul tune

and wow, what a tune

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fS-ZOTVYu6U

geeta, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 01:09 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah, and seeing all the horse meat disco guys up front lose their heads to 'menergy'

that was a moment, right there

geeta, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 02:01 (fourteen years ago)

The SF gig was indeed spectacular, but I have a feeling they play a lot more often in NYC. Apparently this was their first time playing together in SF. I wish they would have played a little more of the classic 90's house that the SF crowd seems to love. Overall just a really nice night though.

viborg, Friday, 9 September 2011 13:56 (fourteen years ago)

now thats a tune.

wow, how has it been five months since that event.

hey bay area, my friends and I are doing a new wave/synth oddity/techno Halloween party at a nice art space in Berkeley. all local DJs, a few rooms, most likely a non-Burner crowd. cheap tix. come one, come all.

eight years pass...

A friend of mine has started up a very informative substack showcasing San Francisco/Bay Area musicians and artists, record labels and events/releases. Lots of focus on new/underground up and coming artists but also looking back to some legends of old too. Not limited by genre or scene, though some of the early posts focus on a few labels and genres, everything is on the table if it's worth sharing. Latest post covers Oakland's Lower Grand Radio, Xyla, Lunchbox, and Santana among others.
