Rolling Stones Halftime Show: C/D?

Personally, I was quite underwhelmed. Thoughts?

musically (musically), Monday, 6 February 2006 03:52 (nineteen years ago)

it came and went. The stage offered more spectacle than the band. Mick can still move pretty well though.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Monday, 6 February 2006 03:56 (nineteen years ago)

Best halftime show in a while, but that's not saying much of anything.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 6 February 2006 04:00 (nineteen years ago)

FLABBY ARMS

Confounded (Confounded), Monday, 6 February 2006 04:02 (nineteen years ago)

I was impressed that Janet Jackson's Nipple is now the singer for the Rolling Stones.

It looks as good ever.

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Monday, 6 February 2006 04:05 (nineteen years ago)

Dud, dud, dud.

Of course, I suppose expecting them to play both "Sweet Neo-Con" and "Cocksucker Blues" was asking a bit too much on my part.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 6 February 2006 04:27 (nineteen years ago)

Not good, not bad.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 6 February 2006 04:30 (nineteen years ago)

i thought they sounded pretty bad.

CLAMS!!!!!!!!!!

veronica moser (veronica moser), Monday, 6 February 2006 04:36 (nineteen years ago)

they were good. Ronnie sounded great, Charlie sounded amazing, Mick was sort of 'eh' voice-wise but was an entertaining ball of energy, Keith just kind of there. They did "Rough Justice", which was cool, so now the haterz can't say "oh they are old and suck and mailing it in and don't care". I mean they had three songs to play out of that incredible catalog, and they threw their best new one in there.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 6 February 2006 04:39 (nineteen years ago)

Ronnie is far, far better at slide than at conventional soloing…

veronica moser (veronica moser), Monday, 6 February 2006 04:44 (nineteen years ago)

a totally classic example of the embarrassingly aged

lf (lfam), Monday, 6 February 2006 04:47 (nineteen years ago)

they were OK -- mick still moves well, esp. for a guy his age. nothing surprisingly good or embarrassing bad.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 6 February 2006 04:48 (nineteen years ago)

What Stormy said. Ronnie sounded/looked particulary good.

space2k (space2k), Monday, 6 February 2006 05:02 (nineteen years ago)

Mick did the old-man shuffle!

Englebert Humperdinck Fan Club President (R. J. Greene), Monday, 6 February 2006 05:02 (nineteen years ago)

awesome, woodrow in particular

NFL Edits Out Explicit Stones Lyrics

weekly handle change (haitch), Monday, 6 February 2006 05:42 (nineteen years ago)

What was the song about somebody being a young chicken and now they're a fox and mick used to be an old rooster?

He could get away with lyrics that awful 35 years ago, but today it's just sad.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Monday, 6 February 2006 05:48 (nineteen years ago)

OK, “One time you were my baby chicken, Now you’ve grown into a fox, Once upon a time, I was your baby rooster, now I’m just one of your cocks.” - from "Rough Justice"

If that's the BEST of their new material, thank God I haven't heard the album.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Monday, 6 February 2006 05:50 (nineteen years ago)

I was able to catch Stevie befor the game...he was fab as usual. I would have loved to see him do the halftime show. Only problem was the horrible back-up dancing, which reminded me of those 60s live rock performances on Hullaballoo (sp?) with those awful go-go dancers and stuff. I kid you not, there was one time where the Mamas and the Papas sang "California Dreamin'" and during the flute solo go-go dancers climbed out of BATHTUBS that were ON STAGE and started dancing. It was awful. You'd think we would have progressed from that awfulness but no. End of digression.

musically (musically), Monday, 6 February 2006 06:22 (nineteen years ago)

wtf @ people defending this. Terrible.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 6 February 2006 06:34 (nineteen years ago)

did anyone else notice Mick self-censor the cigarette line in 'Satisfaction'? He mumbled it, maybe it was just a flub.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Monday, 6 February 2006 06:35 (nineteen years ago)

They should have asked people leaving to sing a bit of "Rough Justice."

Zwan (miccio), Monday, 6 February 2006 06:38 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, watching fifteen minutes of an out-of-breath Mick Jagger attempt to "rock" the crowd was pretty lame. Better than Paul McCartney last year, but that's faint praise.

The Rolling Stones are still popular because they're the Rolling Stones-as-celebrities, not because they're still interesting or capable musically.

Definitely a dud.

Oh, and I did notice the absence of the "cigarette" bit in "Satisfaction." What a joke. The whole thing was an embarrassment.

Still. Not as bad as McCartney.

vartman (novaheat), Monday, 6 February 2006 06:59 (nineteen years ago)

did anyone else notice Mick self-censor the cigarette line in 'Satisfaction'?

WHY? The reference to a woman's "losing streak" can stay but...???

Cunga (Cunga), Monday, 6 February 2006 07:45 (nineteen years ago)

Oh brother....... So I watched their performance at my dad's house, seeing how it was his birthday and all, and I think it's even hard for their own fans to watch them continue on like this. The Stones are what my parents grew up with, but THEY were the ones throwing the insults! At the end we were all very grateful that the Beatles decided to throw in the towel so many years ago instead of going down a similar path. How can anybody miss those FLABBY ARMS?! It was actually weird watching it, I almost felt bad in a way, Mick Jagger out of breath and stuff. Plus why did they have to stretch out "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" for so long? My dad brought up a comment that John Lennon supposedly said years ago after the Beatles were over with and the Stones kept going on, he was asked something like, "why don't the Beatles get together and keep going like the Stones"? And he supposedly answered saying "my question is, why ARE the Rolling Stones still together? The Beatles did everything we could possibly do together and it was time for us to move on". So maybe somebody out there can answer, WHY WHYYYYYY ARE THE ROLLING STONES STILL TOGETHER?!?! I doubt they need the money, and I sure do doubt they have unfinished business with new ideas still flowing. Are they just bored, or will they have no idea what to do with lives once the band is over and done with? WHY??

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Monday, 6 February 2006 07:46 (nineteen years ago)

Because playing the Super Bowl beats sitting around and counting your money.

Freud Junior (Freud Junior), Monday, 6 February 2006 08:03 (nineteen years ago)

I'd like to test that theory if I could

Zwan (miccio), Monday, 6 February 2006 08:10 (nineteen years ago)

Because playing the Super Bowl beats sitting around and counting your money.

-- Freud Junior (freud.junio...), February 6th, 2006.

So then you're saying that they would just be bored. Maybe they can't imagine their lives not being in the band anymore, maybe similar to that old guy in the "Shawshank Redemption" who when he was finally released from prison, just ended up killing himself.........man, this got depressing.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Monday, 6 February 2006 08:15 (nineteen years ago)

I think Mick should focus on making movies like Freejack

Zwan (miccio), Monday, 6 February 2006 08:17 (nineteen years ago)

After last year when Paul Mc. just put it all into his set, I would not have wanted to be the next one. They were there, but Paul was on that night. www.chelseahotelmusic.com

Billyd, Monday, 6 February 2006 08:19 (nineteen years ago)

tone did you watch (some of) freejack on teh speed channel late last night like i did?

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 6 February 2006 08:22 (nineteen years ago)

What the hell is the Speed channel? I rented it back in college (not bad, impressive amount of simian rock stars).

Zwan (miccio), Monday, 6 February 2006 08:24 (nineteen years ago)

Man oh man, what a tough tough crowd! It fuckin ruled! What do want for a 10 minute half-time show? the 2006 Rolling Stones still tower over Frenz fernandez or sugur rois.

Brian Jones (Brian Jones), Monday, 6 February 2006 09:37 (nineteen years ago)

the sigur ross halftime show....

that I'd like to see.....

danny boy, Monday, 6 February 2006 11:52 (nineteen years ago)

I was trying to tell a 10, 9 and 8 year old that this is one of the greatest rock bands ever. They actually waited to see what Bee was into and that this adult might actually know something about life, music…

They thought it sucked and now hate the Stones, this is what you think is one of the best bands of all time? haha, hopefully they don't remember the Stones this way at 18.

BeeOK (boo radley), Monday, 6 February 2006 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

CLASSIC because it wasn't a medley of 20 different bands/artists

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 6 February 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

They did "Start Me Up"?!?!
That's a shock.

peepee (peepee), Monday, 6 February 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

"Rough Justice" sounded great, actually, and Ronnie's pair of gutbucket solos were rather unexpected.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 6 February 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

i was glad it wasn't a medley...
did anyone notice the guitar sound problems on start me up? I thought it was pretty noticeable up until Ronnie's soloing, when out of nowhere guitar sounds finally came into the mix...

i heard miami sound machine with special guests colin farrell and jamie foxx at next year's miami super bowl....

bobby.lasers (bobby.lasers), Monday, 6 February 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

Hm, maybe I'm easily excitable, but I thought it rocked. Clams I definitely heard, out-of-breath Mick not so much. Didn't notice the muscle tone of anybody's arms. It sounded like the stadium volume was nice & bracingly loud, the performance particularly raw, garagey & unrehearsed, especially for a band currently on tour. Something felt genuinely on-the-edge about it, an emotion I felt as walking the edge between fuck-it and we're-not-gonna-fuck-this-up. I liked it when the end of Satisfaction went all skronky. There was some mix trouble with Wood's guitar for awhile that made it cool when he did kick in and the volume went up just that much more.

Asking why the Stones are "still together" has been silly for 30 years. They like to play, and there's some kind of dynamic between the two principal characters.

Boy, did the Seahawks get jobbed.

brianisfaction (briania), Monday, 6 February 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

haha, xpost on the guitar mix trouble.

brianiac (briania), Monday, 6 February 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

Amazing, when they moved Keef you couldn't see the wires or anything.

stu (stu), Monday, 6 February 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

Hahahaha!

Oh god, the Stones suck.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

and they are old lol

brianiast (briania), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

Boy, did the Seahawks get jobbed

Yeah, by the refs.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

no sufjan, no credibility

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:41 (nineteen years ago)

Sea got two TD's taken away, Pgh was given one. Why are the Steelers still together, anyway? Clearly ran outta things to say after the Franco Harris regime.

brianiast (briania), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

Incredible -- after all these years they are STILL the Greatest Rock'n'Roll Band in the World. Get the fuck out of the way, U2. Can't wait for the recap in Rolling Stone next issue.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

the sigur ross halftime show....
that I'd like to see.....

i can see it now: death cab for cutie / decemberists half time spectacular!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

to answer the question: DUD. awful PA mix [ive heard better at basement hardcore shows], embarassing execution... i cant believe some of you are defending this shit.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

Believe it. I wouldn't have liked it as well without the edges, & probably adjust my ear-settings for the problems teevee always has with big, loud sounds in a stadium, but that's just me.

brianiast (briania), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

I thought it was one of the best halftime shows I can remember. It's a televised stadium show -- I wasn't expecting it to sound like Electric Lady Studios.

The real embarrassment -- ARETHA AND AARON DOING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM. GOD FREAKIN' HORRIBLE.

Je4nne ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

My favorite in memory is still the one where ZZ Top did "Legs" and then the Blues Brothers came out with James Brown and there was a battle between Brown and Goodman to see who could jump higher. Plus WHERE THE FUCK WERE THE CHEERLEADERS?!?!?!?!!!!

Zwan (miccio), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

Incredible -- after all these years they are STILL the Greatest Rock'n'Roll Band in the World. Get the fuck out of the way, U2. Can't wait for the recap in Rolling Stone next issue.

Regrettably it is impossible to tell if you are kidding or not.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

I thought the Stones were just okay. Neither great nor terrible. Their playing was suitably raw and earthy. Of course they had to play the oldies that people expected, but it's hard to get very excited about those time-worn chestnuts (though it's still some sort of tribute to "Satisfaction" that it still manages to sound as fresh as it does after 40 years). The new song sounded okay, but somewhat indistinct.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

Jesus, they were playing a goddamn halftime show - it wasn't the time to prove what a lean, efficient rock machine you are (cuz you're not), it was time for confetti cannons and football spirit!

Zwan (miccio), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

My favorite in memory is still the one where ZZ Top did "Legs" and then the Blues Brothers came out with James Brown and there was a battle between Brown and Goodman to see who could jump higher. Plus WHERE THE FUCK WERE THE CHEERLEADERS?!?!?!?!!!!

see, this is what half time shows are about! thank heavens the kitty half-time on puppy bowl ruled.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

We watched the kitty-puppy crap at the party I was at too! The puppy bowl sucked except for when the violent poodle was around, but it was still better than the actual game.

All would have been redeemed if the Stone had been wearing football helmets.

Zwan (miccio), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

I'm starting to feel like I actually GAINED something from being only dimly aware that this was on yesterday.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

Aretha's coat probably didn't leave enough living kittens in Detroit for a suitable halftime show.

brianiast (briania), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

It's kind of beautiful that with all the options cable provides, a decent size of the market share will still be grabbed by "confetti falling on kittens."

Zwan (miccio), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

You can't have Stevie Wonder on the pregame show and expect someone else to top it later on.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

They should do a favorite sons/daughters of each city - so like the Iron City Houserockers -vs- the ... grunge thing or whatever.

by the way: Puppy Bowl II

bunch of ageists on this thread

they sounded great

they even looked great

they've outlasted the 'ohmigod the stones are so ancient they haven't been relevant in years they should just die' stuff

Didn't see it, but I'm glad I went to college in a more adult era where you could hear "make a dead man come" broadcast all day and night.

You can't have Stevie Wonder on the pregame show and expect someone else to top it later on.

Same mistake as when they followed JB on The TAMI Show!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

You know Geraldo? Geraldo Rivera? On his "A Current Affair" style TV show, claiming how they totally "rocked it", and looking back at his first interview with them.

nah, satisfaction is what's known as a standard, boys. that's why people keep on covering it.
