the thread title says it all --> story from billboard. busta is OK, but a studio bodyguard is dead. according to local TV news, mary j. blige, missy elliot, and dmx were also at the video shoot and like busta they got out OK. no suspect had been identified, or arrested, as of my posting this.

wow.someone got shot on the set of a hip-hop video?what a shocker!who would've thought?

heyitsme, Monday, 6 February 2006 05:48 (nineteen years ago)

How did an idiot Googler get to this thread first?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 6 February 2006 06:10 (nineteen years ago)

But the googler doesn't even make sense. Has anybody ever been shot dead on the set of a hip hop video? I mean seriously; ever?

And Busta isn't even associated with violence as far as I know. Hell I thought he just rapped about gibberish and mountain dew over that Psycho theme sample.

"The guy went to shoot Busta Rhymes and the bodyguard jumped in front... and took the bullet," a source told SOHH exclusively. "The dude was gonna shoot Busta Rhymes."

SOHH has also learned from another source that this was the second time in recent months that Busta and his entourage have been shot at.

Meanwhile, according to the New York Post, police are looking for Tony Yayo, who "stomped out of the studio after arguing with the video's producer" shortly before the shooting occurred.

NYT is skeptical about the whole rap battle angle...

Unlike some recent shootings involving rap artists, their allies and their enemies, the shooting was not likely to have been the result of a squabble between Mr. Smith and possible competitors, investigators said. Considered an elder statesman in the hip-hop world, Mr. Smith largely eschews the verbal backbiting and violence-filled braggadocio embraced by so many rap musicians.

damn verbal backbiting!

SOHH has also learned from another source that this was the second time in recent months that Busta and his entourage have been shot at.

are they referring to his SUV getting shot up 3 years ago or something else entirely?

i don't find sohh all that reliable; allhiphop.com is generally better

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

oh i totally agree, AHH is way way better. that was just the first link I found about what i was referring to, and it was in response to a SOHH quote anyway.

reliability of hip hop news sites? haha

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

i know i know, but along with general unreliability, sohh has a habit of starting stories with "SOHH reports that..."

dudes, you don't have to acknowledge yourselves as a source, fritz wollner opines.

The guy went to shoot Busta Rhymes and the bodyguard jumped in front... and took the bullet

i assume there's the usual witness/police/media exaggeration going on here, but it does lead me to wonder: do bodyguards actually do this?? i understand the concept of jumping in front of, say, the president (well, most presidents anyway) to protect him from a bullet. i understand jumping in front of your husband/wife/child. but jumping in front of your boss so you get shot instead of him???

Aww, that's what it was -- the guy lived right down the street from me. There was a lot of sad milling around the other day.

That explains the Spanish woman speaking into a microphone outside the building this morning. Not that Greenpoint isn't a media hotbed usually... That's how we roll.

This photo is identified in Luc Sante's Evidence as most likely being Green St.

six months pass...
Busta Rhymes Arrested For Alleged Assault

August 21, 2006

After performing at the AmsterJam concert at New York's Randall's Island on Saturday, Busta Rhymes was arrested by police for an assault that allegedly took place on August 12. According to the New York Daily News, a man named Roberto Lebron accidentally spat on Rhymes' car in the Chelsea district of New York City on the 12th and Rhymes responded by allegedly kicking him into a concussion, splitting his lip and hurting his wrist. However, when Rhymes was arrested leaving his Randalls Island concert Saturday, cops found a 10-inch knife inside his SUV seat pocket, tacking on a weapons possession charge to the assault charges. The rapper spent the night in jail before being arraigned on Sunday morning and released on his own recognizance. He is due back in court October 24.

Now, Busta's lawyer claims that the charges are simply revenge by the police for Rhymes' refusal to cooperate in the unsolved murder of his bodyguard, Israel Ramirez, which happened in February. "This is payback by the NYPD. He should have received a desk appearance ticket," said lawyer Scott Leemon, according to the Daily News. However, police officials noted that desk appearance tickets are not given for felony assault charges - which is what Rhymes was charged with before prosecutors downgraded the charges to third-degree assault and harassment - both misdemeanors.

Leemon also told MTV News that the weapon in Rhymes' car was a fake machete that he uses in his live show. Although he declined to comment on the specifics of the incident that preceded the assault, Leemon described the charges as resembling "a civil lawsuit set-up. Originally it was tagged as a gang-assault felony, but the DA made it a misdemeanor... I don't think he should have been arrested at all. He was put in the system as payback," Leemon said.

busta's bullshit "stop snitchin'" stance about refusing to help the police about the shooting makes me hate his fucking guts.

There's a little picture-memorial to Ramirez in my nearest corner store -- I'm always tempted to ask the guys around there what they think of Busta's non-cooperation deal.
