explain to me the appeal of robert plant and mick jagger

ive never gotten them as vocalists, and ive really really tried.

jagger sounds like a fucking joke, hes either doing a tawdry impression of a bluesman, with cringey OTT southern pronounciation or hes dragging out his just as bad country singer impersonation. i would find it offensive if it wasnt delivered with such limited vocal chords. how can anyone take this guy seriously? hes a complete joke. its like listening to bad uk hip hop where the rapper is obviously imitating american music but has not an iota of conviction. maybe in the 60s i could see why people might have fallen for it if they didnt know the sources, but in 2006? LOL

as for plant, hes almost as unbearable, but not quite. he does his ridiculous howling, overprojecting thing which is meant to be passionate and dramatic but again, he lacks the basic vocal ability and his voice is devoid of any sort of bass whatsoever so sounds again, like a complete and utter joke. its so overplayed, i dont know how to take it seriously. all that quivering banshee howl shtick, it sounds so melodramatic and devoid of gravitas, its the main factor in preventing me from enjoying led zep fully. both plant and jagger are better when they dont have to sing anything that involves holding a note longer than half a second but when the notes have to get drawn out, they sound hilarious.

am i the only one who feels this way?

Never liked Plant. Seems like a nice bloke though.

I like some of the early/mid stones. Not nice bloke though.

elvis, now THEREs a great singer.

okok, Tuesday, 7 February 2006 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

Give me Jagger over Elvis any day

Dadaismus PBUH (Dada), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

jagger is good for uptempo rockers like jumpin jack flash or midnight rambler, but any of the ballads on beggars banquet or whatever make me cringe. and sweet lady jane is always good for a laugh.

okok, Tuesday, 7 February 2006 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

Singers you can laugh at occasionally are A-OK with me!

Dadaismus PBUH (Dada), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

Wiiiiiiiild howwwsez

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

what about ones you laugh at regularly, or worse, dont laugh at, but just cant stomach (ie like jagger and plant on slower songs)?

actually, i really like the stones bo diddley and chuck berry covers. i think i might prefer the stones' early R&B/covers band years. more fun, overall. at least on songs like come on.

okok, Tuesday, 7 February 2006 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

It's all about attitude with Jagger. I agree Plant can be very irritating, tho I do like him too

Dadaismus PBUH (Dada), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 12:28 (nineteen years ago)

Plant does a very good Steve Marriott impersonation as well - better than Paul Weller's (see "Thank You" on LZII)

Dadaismus PBUH (Dada), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

i love the stones (til late 70s that is) but it's mainly keith for me. jagger, i see how they wouldn't have been successful without him but don't like too much. sometimes he's fun, tho' (and to be honest, i don't think he's ever taken himslef too seriously as a singer/rock star).

as for plant, don't like too much the singer and the band. mostly don't really care, i guess...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

"It's all about attitude"

Who gives a fcuk how well or how they sing-in my book.

Both bands and singers have put out great songs.

And if you don't like them you don't like them
go listen to The Fall

Name some Stones albums and singles you've heard and hated.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

jagger's manner and wierd vox go way beyond just imitating american bluemen.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

plus, people tend to like thin rock singers with attitudes and cool drug habits

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

jagger's easily one of the best and most distinctive singers i've ever run across. his fakiness is an essential part of the equation. in trying to shove "authentic" country/bluesisms through a veddy veddy english voice he comes out with something fundamentally different than his sources. kinda like the stones themselves. obviously whether you like that or not is a matter of personal taste, but i find it pretty fruitful territory through the late 70s.

plant is the weakest link in LZ, but he certainly has his moments.

ZR (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

Plus they're both miles better than Roger Daltrey

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

Oh I can't stand Roger Daltrey

Dadaismus PBUH (Dada), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

I think i dislike daltrey as much as plant... i think i dislike british singers !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, Daltrey is far more the weak link of the who than plant is of zep

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

daltry could beat up jagger and plant though....easily.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

daltry could beat up jagger and plant though....easily.

i dunna, they all seemed pretty tiny english boys, no ? how tall was jagger ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

Daltrey's a hard bastard

Dadaismus PBUH (Dada), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

Jagger's about 5' 7", so's Daltrey

Dadaismus PBUH (Dada), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

so that'd be something like a dwarves fight with pompous hard rock in the background ? (images from "spinal tap" come to mind....).

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

who/stones/zep FITE:

singers: i think plant's a little taller than the others, but daltrey always seemed more ripped up. WHO
guitar: no fair, the stones have too many. if we cut down to keef, though, it gets interesting. townshend's hands are already bleeding, keef is wiry and feels no pain, but page has the power of satan behind him. i'll take richards cause i think he'll fight dirty. STONES
bass: entwistle and jpj gang up on wyman cause he's a prick, then entwistle smacks down jpj, who wishes he were in the keyboards category. WHO
drums: tough one--suffice it to say that charlie watts doesn't stand a chance. bonham seems a little meaner, though. ZEP
management: peter grant, with extreme prejudice. ZEP

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

ask pamela des barres, dudes. sheesh.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

drums: tough one--suffice it to say that charlie watts doesn't stand a chance. bonham seems a little meaner, though. ZEP

c'mon, Moon out-drums and out-drinks them both. Then dies.

I must say: Plant gets some points for never releasing a solo single like this:

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

plant gets points for his amazing early solo stuff!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

Up through Shaken 'n' Stirred and the bits of Dreamland I've heard, Plant's solo career has been far more interesting.

isn't he a beauty

nique (nique), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

liz phair?

gear (gear), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

anyway, rod stewart at his peak was better than all these dudes as a singer, but his valleys are far deeper.

gear (gear), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

does anyone remember laughter?

prince rupert, Tuesday, 7 February 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

three months pass...
At his best Plant was and still can be fantastic. he is 6'1". At his worst he is fucking irritating. he was agreat foil to page, Jones and Bonham.

Jagger is a scrawny dirty old man (whereas Plant is now fat and old) and is a dwarf

Daltrey, was is and always will be piss poor and has a boring tune free voice.

the Who really should just have been called 'Who ?' and are only of relevance to people with no taste or interest in music

siarl davies, Wednesday, 10 May 2006 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

he does his ridiculous howling, overprojecting thing

well, that's just it really. I guess some people don't like it, but to me that sounds like the most obvious appeal of his vocals.

aaron d.g. (aaron d.g.), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

Those two and their singing are the reasons I generally have no desire to listen to Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones, respectively, despite liking quite a bit about each band. (I don't like Roger Daltry either.)

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

i really don't like the who at all. i blame daltrey.

gear (gear), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

What does a singer's height have to do with anything?

I don't like much of the Who after Sell Out, but in my opinion Daltrey and Keiff Moon are the best things about that band. Daltrey's singing on The Who Sing My Generation is awesome.

The Stones -- up to and including Exile -- are unfuckwithable. I looove Mick as a singer.

Plant is the least interesting thing about LZ for me. What a rhythm section, holy cow.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

Robert Plant ain't no Abdel Halim Hafez, no matter how much he might want to be.
