OK, so who amongst us is popping out lunchtime to buy the Belle and Sebastian new CD with extra DVD?

In some quarters, more anticipated than the Arctic Monkeys.

Admittedly, "quarter" is optimis.

(What's the DVD like, you guys?)

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 12:53 (nineteen years ago)

ah, I know what you're going to say now...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

What? That I'd rather eat my own arm?

Dadaismus PBUH (Dada), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

I think the DVD is the half hour gig that was shown on BBC Scotland last week.

mms (mms), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

I'm popping out so bad, I just pitched a tent.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

the boys are staying in the barracks

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't pop out lunchtime to buy it Mark, 'cos I already had it delivered yesterday.

Whilst I do, of course, fully appreciate that on my own I don't actually constitute a quarter, I was anticipating this release infinitely more than I was anticipating the Arctic Monkeys one - although, since I wasn't anticipating the Arctic Monkeys at all until you mentioned it, that's not saying a great deal.

I have to say 'though, it (the Arctic Monkeys album) is actually considerably better than I'd expected - although that still means it falls substantially short of how good it ought to be considering all the hype it's received.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

Good thing there's old geezers like us who still wait for the proper release date to get new albums. But I didn't pop out and get this one because I'm still catching up on Dear Catastrophe Waitress, which I only got round to getting last week. You see, it took me a long time to recover from Fold Your Hands, Child....

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

it's really really ace, although we already have a thread for this. i popped out yesterday. the dvd is fine - stuart and co stand and play in a studio and there's the odd snippet of commentary between tracks.

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

"Good thing there's old geezers like us who still wait for the proper release date to get new albums."

All this home taping that these youngsters do is killing music, apparently.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

So they tell me.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

Here's the other thread (which is currently on New Answers)

Belle and Sebastian's next album is going to be called "The Goalkeeper's Revenge"

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

I have never understand this band, they sound boring, drippy, wimpy twee rubbish.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

you seem to understand them perfectly, actually.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

I'm jealous, mine didn't come with a DVD. What am I missing?

Mickey (modestmickey), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

a dvd.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

i've never understood the "too twee" accusations. okay, so it's not exactly bolt thrower, but if B&S are twee then so are st. etienne and nick drake and the cardigans and the beach boys and practically anyone else who writes multi-instrumental pop music.

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

okay, so it's not exactly bolt thrower, but if B&S are twee then so are st. etienne and nick drake and the cardigans and the beach boys and practically anyone else who writes multi-instrumental pop music.

yeah, and?

heh.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

What are the best songs it so far for those of you with the album?

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 01:20 (nineteen years ago)

the one where the chap lisps over acoustic strumming

gear (gear), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 01:22 (nineteen years ago)

i'm buying this after work 2nite, yes.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 02:05 (nineteen years ago)

we are the sleepyheads, act of the apostle II, dress up in you, to be myself completely - they're all really good actually.

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 02:25 (nineteen years ago)

I just paid dollars for this sucker mc at my local going-out-of-business-soon indie rekkid store, but now I see that J & R has it for 9.99!

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

*sigh* more angry emails forthcoming, then.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

? People emailing Matador about the pricing scheme?

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

Otha Music seems to have avoided this thorny issue by not putting it on their website.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

shit i paid $13.99 at goddam virgin, but it's the only thing in walking distance from my office. anyway, i've listened to it 3 times, and it's pretty much the good-not-great record i expected. i kinda miss trevor horn. but i will undoubtedly like this more the more i listen, because their records are always like that. i can't decide which is less convincing, their t.rex or their sly stone, but i like those songs anyway.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

I hope you got teh DVD with that, Jesse.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 23:24 (nineteen years ago)

Best songs: Dress Up In You, Another Sunny Day, The Blues are Still Blue.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

the dvd is in completely different packaging ('at's why it's DELUXE) from the regular cd, so that should be easy for peeps to figure out.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 23:36 (nineteen years ago)

What I like about this album is that Sarah gets a chance to shine. I try and imagine what these songs would sound like with Isobel singing instead, and it's not that pleasant.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 23:38 (nineteen years ago)

I went out & bought it with the DVD yesterday. I am very happy with my new purchase, thank you.

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 9 February 2006 00:17 (nineteen years ago)

i didn't get the dvd. i forgot to even look for it. oh well. i never watch bonus dvds anyway. i still haven't watched the one that came with the sleater-kinney album.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 9 February 2006 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

With the kidz0rs, I'm all about the Music DVDs these days.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Thursday, 9 February 2006 00:24 (nineteen years ago)

DVD features Isobel in flashback form. This surprised and alarmed me.

Packaging is the same crappy book format, but the DVD version has a DVD, as far as I could see. DVD is £2 extra, so might as well get it, watch it once, then file it away, or hope that it really is a limited edition and wait a while and then flog it.

I dislike the packaging, as I have said elsewhere. It has too much thigh for my liking.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 9 February 2006 09:08 (nineteen years ago)

I might go for the DVD version, shortly.

It would have to go some to be as good as the "Funny little frog" single with the "Lazy line painter jane" live take with good old Monica back for it.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 9 February 2006 09:22 (nineteen years ago)

Is it just me, or does the inclusion of a bloody DVD actively discourage anyone else from buying a CD? It's just a *thing that I don't want*. Mind you, in this case the B&S record is also a thing I don't want so it doesn't arise.

The Talking Heads reissues have a DVD in them, don't they?

Dr.C (Dr.C), Thursday, 9 February 2006 09:53 (nineteen years ago)

"Is it just me, or does the inclusion of a bloody DVD actively discourage anyone else from buying a CD? It's just a *thing that I don't want*."

Where there are two versions being marketed simultaneously, and the one with the allegedly "free" DVD costs extra, then 9 times out of 10 I'll just buy the cheaper one.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 9 February 2006 09:57 (nineteen years ago)

I got the super DVD version delivered on Saturday. So far I'm loving everything but the homage to Tatu in the liner note photos (plus too much thigh).

marianna (mariannapm), Thursday, 9 February 2006 10:01 (nineteen years ago)

can there really be 'too much thigh'?

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Thursday, 9 February 2006 10:09 (nineteen years ago)

Ha ha, I read that as Tati. Thought I'd missed something.

I don't like having an extra DVD, Doc. Spoils the pristeen new album experience, sort of. Ditto daft packaging that just clutters up the house and collects fingerprints.

I am very much a thigh man, but here it just seems to detract from the whole experience. I liked this album a LOT more when it was just a CD-R that wouldn't even work on my CD player. There's also a picture where the girl's blouse is stretched provocatively over her breast. It's just indie Whitesnake.

I think the sleeve notes are horrible too.

Is it me, or is it all a bit smug?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 9 February 2006 11:01 (nineteen years ago)

snug?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 9 February 2006 11:27 (nineteen years ago)

PJM, it's you.

I haven't heard this record and I have no plans to, which makes me feel odd because I remember the anticipation, once.

Remembering anticipation's rubbish, right?

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 9 February 2006 11:27 (nineteen years ago)

Anticipating remembering is worse.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 9 February 2006 11:41 (nineteen years ago)

It is a funny old game, anticipation and memory. Borgesian, almost.

I think perhaps anticipation is beyond me now.

I hate snug packaging too. In fact the worst packaging ever was Neil Young's Greendale, which was not only excessively snug, it had a DVD as well.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 9 February 2006 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

the album is a majestic and ironically muscular masterpiece. the dvd however caused mild spasms of horror. truly B+S is a band you don't need to actually 'watch'. Like a herd of the uncoolest kids in school at a church based shindig. Horrible contrast with a fab fab record in same package.

Algy Watts, Thursday, 9 February 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

i've had this in promo copy for a month now and never did listen to it. what does that say about me?? i think i've given up on belle and sebastian.

doomie x, Thursday, 9 February 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

Album is pretty good. And my little Esther, who looks a lot like PJ's Edith, seems to like it.

But the deluxe package is for the birds- it takes up about as much space as teh Rhino girl group hatbox! I shoulda listened to the accountant on this thread.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Thursday, 9 February 2006 13:08 (nineteen years ago)

Hello Esther!

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 9 February 2006 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

i like the packaging and i like the dvd.

fuck you. fuck the lot of you.

(jks, jks).

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Thursday, 9 February 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

Motherfucking Amazon.co.uk sent me the wrong bastard album - I ordered the DVD version and they sent me the CD only version. Gits. And on the returns page it says they won't accept it back if the wrapper has been taken off. Well, of course I took it fuckin off! They're going to get it back regardless.

Don't know why I had to write all that here, but it sure is good to vent.

Haven't really listened to it properly yet. Sounds alright. I like the girls in the artwork photos.

Merryweather (scarlet), Thursday, 9 February 2006 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

no one's mentioned "to be myself completely" which is one of the best non-Stuart B&S tracks yet!

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Thursday, 9 February 2006 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

That, my dear DL, is known as "damning with faint praise".

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 9 February 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

haha, fair enough. good song though

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Thursday, 9 February 2006 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

'Another Sunny Day' is a corker, but it works as a whole I reckon. 'Dress Up In You' and 'Mornington Crescent' have grown hugely, and 'We Are The Sleepyheads' is excellent.

Bit surprised at 'The Blues Are Still Blue' as the next single, though.
