it's an expensive outlay, and i'm asking trusty old ILM types for their advice before i do anything! Having outgrown the basic STANTON cd players (basic looping, no bpm counter, u know the drill) and bog standard mixer i'm thinking of making the leap up to your proper 'industry standard' type £1k-for-the-pair jobs. the rubbish-y looping function on the ones i've got are driving me crazy for a start. can't wait to get the proper stuff on the go. had the others for about a year.

who's done likewise?

what are your 'findings'?

Yes - go for Traktor DJ (Native Instruments) and get the external controller. it's excellent.

when you say "the" external controller, what brand are you talking about?

How much is an external mixer for Traktor? Do you need a superpowered laptop to handle it?

Also, anyone here know about Mixmeister? I heard of an add-on that you can use to mix live, does it anyone know what it's called and if it's any good? (and sorry for the brief derailment)

any mixer will work with Traktor. yes, you need a decent, but not extreme laptop to handle Traktor. fuck Mixmeister and other knock-off's. Traktor 3 + external mixer + hours and hours to encode then analyze your collection is all you need. learning curve appx. 12hrs. suppliment your Traktor set-up with 1 Technics 1200 and 1 mid-price CDJ to give the appearance of being a "real DJ". these can be useful if you also purchase a decent FX box.

external controllers are good in place of a mixer. Traktor 3 now has 4 decks and a built-in Allen and Heath mixer with filters etc. Store loop points/samples etc.

Vinyl is Heavy.

Which version of Traktor is the easiest/best to use? I'm on a 1.8ghz processor laptop with 512mb, will I be ok with that or will the indie kids RIOT when the music stops and they ain't hearing Cribs no mo?

I kinda like how Mixmiester works, just flinging tracks onto a list and looking at a waveform rather than the double-decks layout of most programs, does anyone have good things to say about it as a live mixing tool?
