Are there any good books on krautrock?

Well since the other guy did it, I decided to jump on and ask for recommendations people might have for books on krautrock, as I've been really getting into Can and Neu! amongst most others recently. Anything will do, really (overview/history of the genre, select bands and their biographies, etc). My amazon search unfortunately yielded nothing and I'm not prepared to believe that there aren't any books on the subject out there. Thaaaank yooooouuuu.

i got the german edition of krautrocksampler as a christmas present from my ex girlfriend and it was probably the best present i've ever received. cope's writing is really fun to read and his enthusiasm even carries over well into the translation

That Julian Cope book seems be going for around £30 on ebay.

(Oddly, there are no 'completed' auctions, but several 'current' ones)

It's infectious, but it's madly out of date, ironically.

In as much as, an album that he describes as 'findable for a few quid' will now go for bigger bucks. Probably because of his book.

Also, various lyrics and stuff are completely wrong, but I dunno, it may be on purpose. "One eyed soul, mushroom head, I gonna get my kicks there" umm, no.

I leant my copy of this book a few years ago to a guy who was 'really getting into Krautrock'. He's never given it back and we lost contact in the meantime. We exchanged a few emails around the time of John Peels death where I asked for it back and he said "You know the funny thing is, I've never read it".

Wasn't funny for me.

I still haven't got it back.

In the latest issue of Mojo someone asks about Cope's book and apparently there are no plans to reprint it. Mojo then says that copies go for around £100 on ebay which may explain the sudden increase in copies listed.

And I kinda disagree with hpencil in the sense that there are fifty album reviews in the book and unless you've got all fifty of them, you might find something interesting to read there. And there's probably some interesting historical material in the book that's not just standard common knowledge stuff. And I started all three of my sentences in this post with the same conjunction.

I don't know the Cosmic Egg book, but I also don't know all of the albums in Cope's top fifty, and I find him to at least be passionate about his choices. Plus he writes about some other stuff not in the top 50 in the first part of the text - not a lot, I suppose, but I don't know as that there are 300 great Krautrock albums anyway (though I'm sure there are some interesting ones that Cope doesn't write about).

i haven't read cosmic egg either, but i wanna. there was some book abt. obscure european prog at the store the other week. it was by some norwegian (or finnish? i don't remember) scholar type. crazzzzy. but he didn't cover germany at all. what an interesting choice. hmmm.

Haven't read it but it got a bad review in The Wire a few months back ("astonishingly lax...unconvincing and obsolete"). Personally I wouldn't bother with it, David Stubbs' book is definitive.

Stubbs book is really good yeah, it only really loses focus with the 80s chapters and maybe the Kraftwerk one, but he managed to get access to most of the major figures (in some cases just in time).

is anyone reading Neu Klang, the recently published oral history of krautrock? I found the first 80 pages or so surprisingly dull, but we've finally gotten to 1968, when they all forget about the Beatles and start forming communes and stuff, so I expect it to get better
