Examples of types of music I'm looking for:

Pussy Galore
The Stooges
New York Dolls
Captain Beefheart
Country Teasers
"Rip My Joint"-styled Rolling Stones
Oblivians

Examples of what I don't want:

Led Zeppelin
Cream
Black Crowes
or any other type of plain rock/blues mix

Suggestions?
Thanks.

Aren't the New York Dolls a "plain rock" band?

I guess you should try the Gibson Brothers.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Thursday, 9 February 2006 23:28 (nineteen years ago)

Detroit Cobras
White Stripes

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 9 February 2006 23:29 (nineteen years ago)

In what way are Led Zeppelin "plain" anything (or less avant-garde than the ones you like?)

Anyway, you should go buy some Count Bishops albums, either way.

What about Delta 72? I really like the Sorega Doushita EP, the albums not as much. There are some excellent demo tracks available here:

chad (chad), Friday, 10 February 2006 01:45 (nineteen years ago)

The examples of what you don't want are really throwing me off right now. Cream did a shitload of "out there" psych style stuff. And Led Zeppelin uhmm... have you heard Led Zeppelin?

Has anybody heard Pussy Galore's recording of the Exile on Main Street album? Should I stop looking for this?

Brian Jones (Brian Jones), Friday, 10 February 2006 08:33 (nineteen years ago)

animals & men seem to have been heavily into the blues, though their music doesn't really sound it. even when they cover "evil going on."

baby, disco is fuck (yournullfame), Friday, 10 February 2006 08:42 (nineteen years ago)

The Electric Eels
Motorhead?
Chrome? Debris? Beefheart's Magic Bands were pretty darned avant-garde.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 10 February 2006 08:42 (nineteen years ago)

xhuxk and lek otm. My ex-girlfriend hates that long jammy Cream/Zep stuff, but considers herself a fan because of stuff like "Strange Brew," "Dancing Days" and even "Crossroads." (Come to think of it, my mom, a first-generation Elvis/Gene Vincent fan, digs "Rock and Roll" and prolly other Zeppelin stuff.) For what it's worth, my ex also loves Etta but not Aretha. Come to think of it, she considers Johnny "Guitar" Watson practically a personal hero altho "I don't like blues." So . . .

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 10 February 2006 08:57 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and maybe Mr. Highway Man?

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 10 February 2006 08:58 (nineteen years ago)

Fact is, Cream had lots of psych-pop stuff XTC fans had better check out, if they haven't. "Doing That Scrapyard Thing," for one.

Mestema, OTM. All in the fam with Gibsons, Gories, Monsieur Jeffrey Evans, 68 Comeback.

plus - any garage band that sounds like them.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

the black lips "let it bloom", the coachwhips "peanut butter and jelly..." & the 2 king khan/bbq show records are the best newer examples of this kind of thing I heard in the last year, though i don't keep up with it all as much as i used to. older stuff from the past decade or so: deadly snakes first 3, gories/blacktop/dirtbombs/demolition dollrods, mummies, gibson bros., bassholes, jacknife, spaceshits, teengenerate, & the universe of billy childish. check out in the red records and goner records for lots more.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

Gang of Four maybe, I always thought the guitars were similar to Beefheart's guitarists style.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 10 February 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

Wouldn't Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers be an obvious choice, well you know, cuz of the New York Dolls thing?

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 10 February 2006 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

How's about....THE SONICS!!

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 10 February 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

Slaughter and the dogs used to be a Led Zeppelin tribute band.

The Red Crayola.

Ant., Friday, 10 February 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

Several have been said by name, but just about all of the two-man-low-fi-blooze-punk stuff that was all the rage for about fifteen minutes a while ago.

I will add my favorite (even though they are, as of now, no longer a duo) (and they are my favorite only because they're the loudest) - Immortal Lee County Killers.

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Friday, 10 February 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

"Slaughter and the dogs used to be a Led Zeppelin tribute band."

If anything I think you'll find they were a Slade tribute band.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Saturday, 11 February 2006 10:09 (nineteen years ago)

If it's any help 'though, Skrewdriver started out as a Rolling Stones covers band.
