Where is the love for Afternoon delight by the Starlight vocal band?

Reminds me very much of mid 70's radio 2 (which I realise isn't always a good thing but...). Just puts me in a nice place.

There's been a thread about this before

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 10 February 2006 10:27 (nineteen years ago)

Oops, sorry. Just discovered the search thingie and found it.

Ant., Friday, 10 February 2006 10:37 (nineteen years ago)

Is there a thread just on this?

Ned T.RIfle II (Ned T.Rifle II), Friday, 10 February 2006 11:32 (nineteen years ago)

Judging by what I've read over the past hour, there should be a thread devoted to people saying "There's been a thread about this before"

Ant., Friday, 10 February 2006 11:40 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, if only there was a way to avoid making people say, "There's been a thread..."

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Friday, 10 February 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

Just come on to this thingie for the first time today. Wish I'd read all the many thousands of posts beforehand...God, I feel such a lightweight...

Ant., Friday, 10 February 2006 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

Erm, that's StarLAND Vocal Band, and there was evidently love for them in some quarters when they won the Grammy for best new artist of 1976!

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Friday, 10 February 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

Sky rockets in flight.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 10 February 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

Afternoon delight indeed...

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Friday, 10 February 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

Did anyone give Ant his welcome pack?

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Friday, 10 February 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway...IS there a thread = I'd like to know more about them?

If you put StarLIGHT Vocal Band into google image search it comes up with an interesting result.

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Friday, 10 February 2006 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

The love? Somewhere on the campus of Port Chester University.

J Arthur Rank (Quin Tillian), Friday, 10 February 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

Is it like a welcome pack for when you join the beavers?

In which case where are my turquoise sweatshirt and navy blue activity trousers?

The spelling I blame on a dyslexic father whose tapes were the source of the thread question.

So Steve Vai is a fan then?

Ant, Friday, 10 February 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

five months pass...
"Afternoon Delight" is probably the most sterile, puritan song about raw fucking sex ever made.

San Diva Gyna (and a Masala DOsaNUT on the side) (donut), Monday, 17 July 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

isn't about watching fireworks in the daytime and the absurdity thereof?

that's how i remember it as a kid.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Monday, 17 July 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

uh...no

Moonwalkbjrain (chaki), Monday, 17 July 2006 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

Some of these seventies bands are so weird. I posted the link to the Heatwave "Boogie Nights" clip in part last night because they were such a weird band. Here is the freaking STARLAND VOCAL BAND!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AX_bheJrdgM&search=starland%20vocal%20band

Worth recounting that this group won the Grammy for Best New Artist in '76 over Boston.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 17 July 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

It's a pretty sterile song about pretty sterile sex if you ask me.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 17 July 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, come on:

"I always thought a fish could not be caught who didn't bite
But you got some bait a-waitin' and I think I might like nibbling a little afternoon delight"

"The thought of rubbing you is getting so exciting"

Thanks for posting the link. The construction workers supposedly digging the song is the only thing I remember from their TV show except the fact that THEY HAD A FREAKING TV SHOW.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Monday, 17 July 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

I like how he talks about what his "motto" has always been with regard to sexual activity at different times of the day.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 17 July 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

i think the main reason people my age tend to be creeped out by this song is because they shudder to think of their own moment of conception.

celebrity mole: hawaii (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 July 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

HAHAHA.

I guess the advantage of being born in 1971 is that there was enough freaky music then such that I couldn't guess what was being played when I was conceived... well, besides the fact that my mom told me eventually. Thanks, momz!

Starland Vocal Band? They suck!

Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight
gonna grab some afternoon delight.
My motto's always been; when it's right, it's right.
Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night.
When everything's a little clearer in the light of day.
And you know the night is always gonna be there any way.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

u r all reading dirty things into the song. it's about not wanting to wait until it's dark to let off your fireworks

Thinkin' of you's workin' up my appetite
looking forward to a little afternoon delight.
Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ingite
and the thought of rubbin' you is getting so exciting.

they forgot their matches.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Monday, 17 July 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

Doin the nasty in the seventies, with a slight country tinge.

hector (hector), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 03:45 (nineteen years ago)

What makes this song so cool? Well, among other things...

1.Weird-ass production (steel guitars, intermittent Hollywood strings, way-flanged glam-guitar) that wouldn't've sounded out of place on The Notorious Byrd Brothers
2. That disorienting free-falling melisma that nearly hits the ground (but they deploy the parachute just in time.)
3. Except for the two brief bridges, EVERY line rhymes with "Delight". (OK, pointless for sure, but at least it's impressively pointless.)
4. Inspired the 3rd-or-4th funniest episode of "Arrested Development". (Greatest American sitcom evah. Come on!)
